The surface of the county is level. The soil is various, being composed of clay, heavy black loam, and a light sandy soil. The principal crops are corn, wheat and oats. The soil is adapted to the raising of fruits of all kinds. In the upper section of the county, bordering on the Eastern Shore and Wor- cester and Pocomoke Railroads, strawberries and other small fruits are raised in abundance-strawberries being the principal and the best paying crop.
The inhabitants of the southernmost district of the county cultivate water- melons largely, realizing very handsome profits. The melons are sent by vessels to Boston, New York and other cities. The county has extensive beds of oysters, which furnish employment to a great number of her citizens, and adds much to her wealth and prosperity.
