PREFACE.
THE Publisher of the Baltimore City Directory presents another volume to his fellow citizens, with the belief that it will be found more correct than any of its predecessors.
After all the anxiety and worry hourly attendant upon the publica- tion, he feels but little inclination, now, to elaborate the different spellings of John Smith, the Reillys, Schaeffers, &c., or to enumerate the interminable difficulties of the force-pump process of procuring and spelling the names, and, afterwards, through the many manipulations they have to pass, of canvassers, compilers, printers, proof-readers, &c., of preserving their spelling. These difficulties are so patent that intel- ligent persons will certainly be liberal enough towards the publisher, when a mistake is found, even in their own names, to have kindness and forbearance to overlook any error, as he has to bear the responsibil- ity of every careless man employed on the work.
As a Baltimorean, he takes this opportunity of congratulating his fellow citizens on the bright prospects looming up, of Baltimore becom- ing a still greater commercial centre, now that peace has been so fully established and trade is working its way into its wontcd channels.
The continued high price of printing paper, and the great advance in the price of labor and all material used, have compelled us to advance the price of the book.
The Advertising Department has been handsomely gotten up, and in many instances the business of the advertiser has been increased tenfold by this' cheap mode of calling the attention, not only of our own citi- zens, but also of the many strangers visiting the city, to the advantages offered by them; the ready access they have to the work, from its being always before them at all the hotels, public offices, counting rooms, banks, insurance offices, workshops, &c., makes it an invaluable reference in this respect.
Attention is particularly called to the list of "Corrections, Addi- tions, Alterations," &c. on the back of the Title page, which have occurred during the publication.
We return our grateful acknowledgments to the uniform courtesy extended to our canvassers, and hope and believe that it has been recip- rocated by them in every instance.
The public's obd't serv't,
THE PUBLISHER.
