PREFACE.

The Publisher of the BALTIMORE CITY DIRECTORY herewith presents to the citizens of Baltimore his New Edition for 1870. The increase of names they will find has been large ; there being 83,500 in the work, or 10,500 more than in the edition of 1869. Increase of Whites 113 per cent., of Colored 25 per cent .; of Whites and Colored, 14 per cent. Taking the ratio of 25 per cent. of the population as being thus embraced, the estimate is arrived at of 334,000 for the entire residents of our city.

The addition to the business of our city is fully commensurate with the increase of our numbers, and the opening of additional railroads, the establish- ment of lines of steamers, and other enterprizes, conducive to our commercial prosperity, have wrought, are working, and will continue to effect changes so great as to be astounding, and so beneficial as to afford ground for congratula- tion. The marked improvement in the style and architecture of our buildings, public and private, elicits the attention of all beholders-of the resident citi- zen as well as of the temporarily sojourning stranger.
