But, we are yet behind some of our sister cities in our modes of designat- ing places of abode and of business: the opening of new, and the extension and widening of old streets, aggravate the necessity, heretofore existing, for a more inethodical, uniform and accurate method of numbering our houses. The pro- cess of preparing a Directory exhibits, glaringly, the defect alluded to ; and, inasmuch as the work of renumbering must be resorted to, inevitably, the occa- sion is presented fairly for considering the most efficient mode of doing that work ; experience establishes the superiority of the Decimal system above any other hitherto tried; and every consideration of expediency and convenience dictates an early resort to that system. The Consecutive plan involves ever recurring changes, which serves but to derange and confuse ; and as time rolls on, and improvements multiply, that confusion becomes more obvious, more per- plexing, and needlessly adds to the labors of the municipal authorities, as well as to the difficulty found by private individuals in exploring our streets. All our streets, Baltimore street not excepted, exhibit duplicate and triplicate num- bers, and wanting numbers.
To the advantages of Advertising, our citizens, even at this day, are not fully alive ; perhaps no one proof of this assertion can be adduced, more per- ceptible, than that afforded by a comparison of Directories of different cities of our land ; the Directory of San Francisco of 1870 comprises 250 pp. of adver- tisements ; that of Boston 350 pp. - inserted by people who cannot be suspected of a lack of shrewdness, or want of perception, as to the things that serve as
iv
PREFACE.
aids to their business success. The Baltimore Directory dwindles down to 32 pp. and this with a population exceeding that of Boston, and probably doubling that of San Francisco, although indefatigable efforts by the canvassers have been made, even in some degree to annoyance, to place our Directory, in this feature, in a less unfavorable point of comparison.
To every class of our e tizens is due our cordial thanks for their prompt and courteous responses to the inquiries of our canvassers, and tendering to our patrons a grateful acknowledgment of their favors and our congratulations at the bright prospects of the future,
I am, resp'y, the public's obed't serv't.
