PREFATORY NOTE

A S far as the writer can ascertain, the first catalogue of Bowdoin College was issued in October, 1807. It is a broadside, measuring twelve by sixteen inches, printed by John M'Kown of Portland, and headed, "Catalogue of the Officers, Graduates, and Students of Bowdoin College." The careful inves- tigations of Hon. Joseph Williamson, Litt.D., of the Class of 1849, show that similar broadsides were issued as annual catalogues from 1809 to 1821 inclusive, with the probable exception of the years 1811 and 1816. The first General Catalogue, in the present sense of the term, was the Latin triennial of 1810. This, an octavo of eight pages, was also printed at Portland by John M'Kown. These Latin catalogues were regularly issued every third year from 1810 to 1873 inclusive. The last of the series was published in 1881, the pamphlet having then attained the size of 144 pages.

The present catalogue is the third to appear in English, and has been prepared on substantially the same plan as its predecessors which were published in 1889 and 1894. It aims to give the date and place of birth, also, when necessary, of death, the residence and occupation, and the academic degrees of every graduate. Membership in the upper branches of State Legisla- tures and in Congress, the holding of the higher political and judicial offices, and service in the army during the period of war are mentioned. As a rule, residence in different places is not given unless the person has resided in each ten years. Change of occu- pation and other considerations, however, have frequently modified the application of this principle. When not otherwise stated,

Prefatory Note

the place of death is the residence last mentioned. In this edition, an effort has been made for the first time to give similar biograph- ical facts respecting the officers of government and instruction.

The college has conferred the degree of A.M. upon its graduates, subsequent to the Class of 1889, only upon formal examination. In these instances the date of the year is printed after the degree to show that the latter was pro merito. In case of earlier classes, on the other hand, the occurrence of a date after the Bowdoin degree of A.M. indicates that the degree of A.B. was never formally conferred. The names of the few gentlemen who were students here for several terms, and received the higher degree without the lower, have now been placed with their college classmates, rather than with the honorary graduates, as was the practice in previous editions of this catalogue.

Every one who detects an error, or can supply any deficiency in this volume, is earnestly requested to inform the compiler at once. As its active preparation began only two months before printing, it has seemed best to prefix a page of additional facts and dates received too late for insertion in their proper place. The writer takes this opportunity to express his gratitude for aid rendered by numerous correspondents, and especially by his assist- ants in the college library, whose cheerful co-operation has made it possible to prepare and issue the volume in a much shorter time than was devoted to each of its predecessors.
