PREFATORY NOTE
T HIS fourth edition in English of the General Catalogue of Bow- doin College and the Medical School of Maine aims to give with greater fulness than its predecessors the residences and occupa- tions of all who have received degrees from the institution and of all who have served as officers or teachers. Effort has been made to mention service in the army and the navy, in State legislatures and in Congress, election or appointment to political and judicial offices, and the holding of the presidency of State and national societies. Academic degrees are given with dates and the names of institutions conferring them. To avoid, however, the constant repetition of the word Bowdoin, it has been consistently omitted in places where it can be clearly understood, viz., in connection with degrees and profes- sorships held in this institution.

In order to confine the subject matter of over sixty-seven hundred paragraphs to a reasonable number of pages, it has been necessary to use freely cross references and abbreviations. The latter are either so obvious or so customary in catalogues of this character that no list of them is printed. Much more regretted by the compiler was the necessity of omitting the record of many positions held by graduates which would illustrate the influence and esteem they have won in their respective communities. Here the temptation to deal fully with the living was also checked by inability to deal fairly with the dead in similar particulars.
It was found inexpedient to print post office addresses in this volume. They can now be obtained separately in the pamphlet issued in February 1912. It is hoped that revised editions of this address list will be issued in alternate years.
The academic alumni are arranged by the classes to which they be- longed while undergraduates, although in some cases the bachelor's degree was not conferred till a later period. In a very few instances,

former undergraduates who received an honorary, but not the bache- lor's degree, are placed in their respective classes. The degree of Bachelor of Science, rather than that of Bachelor of Arts, was given at graduation to fifty-nine men in the classes from 1874 to 1882 in- clusive, and to five men in the classes of 1901 and 1902. The subse- quent action of the Trustees and Overseers in conferring the degree of Master of Arts, in course, upon several of the former group, and a special vote passed in 1904 in regard to the latter group, have so established the equality of these degrees as regards these particular individuals, that it has not seemed needful to distinguish them from their classmates.
In order to secure accuracy in the matter of dates and the latest information in respect to residence and occupation, over a thousand letters have been sent to as many graduates since the printing of this catalogue was commenced in February. The compiler expresses his thanks to all who have answered these letters and at the same time his regret that many replies were received too late to find place ex- cept in the Additions and Corrections.
The writer takes this opportunity to acknowledge his great indebt- edness to numberless correspondents of recent years, to various mem- bers of his library staff, and in particular to the assistant librarian whose technical skill and painstaking and untiring labors have made this volume a publication of the library rather than of the librarian.
