Lost non-graduates 59
INTRODUCTION
This directory of non-graduates has been compiled with the hope that it may help to bring all former students closer to the university and to one another. It gives the names of about 1,700 persons, and includes all who have not received degrees or certificates who have been in attend- ance not less than one semester, not including any who would have completed their work later than 1915.
Names are given alphabetically, in full, with years of attendance, cur- riculum or major subject, degrees received with place and date, occupa- tion, and mail address. A single year, as 1898, indicates attendance for one semester ; 1898-8 indicates attendance for both spring and fall semesters of the calendar year; 1898-9 indicates the college year.
Somewhat over 150 non-graduates are deceased. To these an aster- isk (*) is prefixed, with the year of death if known. Occupation and residence at the time of death are given in parenthesis when known. All attempts to locate a few more than 100 failed. To the names of these a dagger (+) is prefixed, with the residence at time of registration in parenthesis. This number does not seem large when taken in con- nection with the fact that no attempt to locate non-graduates has been made by the university since 1899, and then only for those in attendance not less than a year and a half. In many cases the only information of record was that given at the time of registrtaion, in some cases 46 years ago. Information was received directly from about three fourths of those living. No addresses are given, except in parenthesis, from which mail has been returned to sender.
The geographic index is arranged alphabetically by states and towns. In no case is a name given when mail has been returned. Names are entered under the town which each individual gives as his mail address, even when it is known that he lives in one place and does business in another. For full addresses and other information it is necessary to refer to the alphabetic index.
The preparation of this directory was made possible through aid fur- nished by President Aley. Help has been given by fraternity chapters, secretaries of local alumni associations, and hundreds of individuals, all of which is gratefully acknowledged.
That this work has many imperfections is recognized by the compiler. For some of these he is doubtless responsible. Other are due to the fact that the university records are occasionally incomplete, especially for the early years, and the records of the College of Law were burned in the Bangor fire of 1911. For those who did not reply, the best in- formation available has been given.

INTRODUCTION
Corrections are earnestly requested. Particular attention is asked for the list of lost non-graduates and the names under towns. Send cor- rections or clues which may lead to them to the Alumni Association, together with changes in occupation and address. This will materially lessen the labor of preparation of future directories, which it is planned to issue from time to time.
