Report of Superintendent of Schools

FOR THE YEAR ENDING FEBRUARY 15, 1923

To the Superintending School Committee:

To you and to the Citizens of Newburg, I make my report for the year just passed.

This year has been a profitable one for the Schools although it has been full of difficulties owing to the unusually severe winter and a large amount of sickness. You have been fortunate in being able to secure good teachers for the full year, thus avoiding so many changes which are a detriment to the best interests of the schools. These teachers have been conscientious workers, stimulating the pupils to do their best and much work has been done toward bringing the scholars up to grade.

No course of study has been introduced this year because con- ditions were such that it was not possible to do so but this must be done early in the coming year if we wish to make our schools all that they should be and also to prevent wasted work on the part of the teachers and pupils. When this is done, each pupil will be doing the same work in each grade at the same time and scholars will be able to go from one school to another, or even one town to another, with- out loss of time.

We have succeeded in lengthening the school year from thirty to thirty-three weeks. This has been a great benefit to the schools and has helped greatly in bringing the pupils up to standard.

In closing, I will say that your schools are deserving of your unqualified support and with the adoption of a more uniform system of text-books together with an adequate course of study, I see of no reason why they will not be all that you desire them to be.

After careful consideration we recommend the following amounts for schools for the coming year.

$3,500 00

With this report, I wish to thank the School Committee and the Citizens of Newburg for their courtesy to me, and to assure them of my appreciation of their hearty cooperation.

Respectfully submitted,

WM. G. BAILEY, JR.,

Superintendent of Schools.
