They spared the life of John Drinkwater because of his knowledge of nav- igation. The life of another young man was also spared. However, they were both in danger because they would not promise not to tell when they should get to port. One day the ship stopped off a beach on the coast of Africa to get water. Some had been ob- tained and Drinkwater and the other man had gone to look for more. When they returned to the beach they found the ship was standing out to sea. They set out to get to civilization and after 16 weeks of privations and danger in the jungle, which caused the death of the other man, Drinkwater arrived at a Dutch settlement in Caffraria, south of the Orange River. From there he was enabled to get to Cape Town. He shipped for home but was impressed aboard a British ship for three years. He arrived in Boston in 1802. HAMILTON

(434) John and (435) Betty (Chandler) Hamilton.

The first record of this family of Hamiltons in this neighborhood is the birth of John Hamilton, son of John and Betty Hamilton in North Yarmouth on Sept. 28, 1733. There are family traditions concerning the first generations which are not borne out by the records. One such tradition is that three brothers John, Ambrose and Roland (or Rowland) came to this country from Scotland. But John, Ambrose and Roland were born in North Yarmouth. The only way the tradition can be true is that the father of John, Ambrose and Roland had brothers Ambrose and Roland of whom there is now no record. Another tradition concerns John's wife Betty. She is said to have been "Betsey Franzy from Ganzy (Island of Guernsey)", but the record in the First Church of North Yarmouth at the time of their reception as members on April 20, 1742 gives her name as "Betty (Chandler) Hamilton." She could have been married to a Chandler before marrying John Hamilton, but among the numerous Chandler families in this region at that time there is no record of such a person. The tradition goes on to say that Betsey's father, after her mother's death, married a servant maid. This so provoked her that she left home and came to this country. She was well-to-do, and parts of her elaborately embroidered wedding dress were, until recently at least, in the possession of members of the family on Che- beague Island.

They lived at Walnut Hill.

They adopted a girl named (436) Margaret O'Brien who was baptized on May 23, 1742, shortly after their joining the Church.

They had previously "owned the Covenant" before the Church on Nov. 11, 1733 when they had John Jr. baptized.

John died on Chebeague Island about 1767 and Betty died about 1772. They had :

They settled on Chebeague and he built their home on the north shore to the west of Division Point. He served 6 months during the Revolution as private in Capt. Benjamin Parker's Company. He enlisted on July 3, 1775 and served until Dec. 21, 1775. This Company was sta- tioned on the seacoast of Cumberland County. Late in life he purchased a tract of land at Duck Trap about 10 miles from Camden, Maine, where he died. His last letter home was dated July 7, 1795. He and Deborah joined the First Church of North Yarmouth on Sept. 15, 1765, but at some time before 1810 "she expressed contempt of the Church in a letter to Dr. Mitchell" and she had joined herself to the Methodists. So she was excommunicated on Oct. 15, 1810. She was the first to be buried in the Methodist Cemetery on Chebeague. She died before 1818. They had 7 sons, 7 daughters and 71 grandchildren :
