HILL
The immigrant ancestor of those Hills who came to Cousins Island was named (694) John. It is impossible to recognize him with certainty in England before his depart- ure, but there was a John Hill, yeoman, who lived in Chaff- combe, a parish three miles east of Chard who was of age but unmarried in 1628. This man removed before 1633. If he is the same as John of Dorchester, the line may be run back a few generations: His father, (695) John was born about 1571 and was the 10th and youngest son of (696) Wil- liam of Poundsford, Somersetshire, who was son of (697) Roger who was the son of (698) William.
The immigrant, John Hill, had land granted to him in Dorchester in 1636, 1637/8 and 1638. He lived after 1644 in that part of Dorchester called Uncaty and later set off as Milton. On Feb. 14, 1733/4 representatives of all his chil- dren sold their rights in the undivided lands in Stoughton. There is no evidence that he was a blacksmith as is usually said. His will indicates only that he was a farmer. He was not a churchman and therefore not a "freeman". There is no record of his holding any public office. His wife's name was (699) Frances. "John Hill of the Great Lotts departed out of this life the 31st day of May 1664." Their youngest son was :
(700) Ebenezer b. about 1645 in Dorchester. He mar. (1) in 1683 (701) Ruth Bailey, dau. of Guido and Elizabeth Bailey of Salem. She d. soon after 1688 and he mar.
