Ligonia, a small village in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland County. The Portland Rolling-Mill (railroad iron), the Portland Kerosene Oil Company's, and the Atwood Lead Company's works are located here.

Logan, a post-office for Bancroft Plantation, Aroostook County.

Lynchtown is Township Number Five of Sixth Range. It lies on the New Hampshire border, in the northern part of Oxford County. Parmachene Lake, noted for its fish and the abundance of game in its vicinity, occupies the north-eastern portion of the township. It is the source of the Magalloway River, which, after a picturesque course, empties into Umbagog Lake, fifty miles southward. Parmachene, though excelled in size by several of the Androscoggin lakes, is said to be the gem of the group. The scenery is said to be most attractive, while its remoteness from all other settlements adds to the situation an element of romance. The place is reached by steamers from Umbagog Lake, and by carriage connecting the boats at Aziscohos Falls, and for a few miles of the upper portion of the river.

Lynchville, a post-office in Albany, Oxford County.

Maple, a post-office in Atkinson, Piscataquis County.

Maplewood, a post-office in Newfield, York County.

Maysville, annexed to Presque Isle in 1883. See articles under name of both towns.

Magalloway Plantation (Number Five, Range One), in the northern part of Oxford County, has the New Hampshire line for its western boundary, with Umbagog Lake and Rapid River for its southern limit, and Lincoln Plantation on the north. The Magalloway River runs through its north-western section, with a pond extending eastward therefrom to the middle of the township. It is sixty-four miles north north-west of Paris. Lying on the most southerly of the Andros- coggin Lakes, it is quite easy of access. The noted Brown Farm is its principal hotel. The plantation was organized under its present name in 1883. The valuation at that time was $45,000 ; polls, 15. In 1880 the population was 45.

Molunkus Plantation was re-organized as a plantation in 1883. It is sixty-five miles north by north-east from Bangor, and seven miles 1 on the Maine Central Railroad at Mattawamkeag. It is on the daily stage line between the latter place and Patten. The township

APPENDIX.

forms the south-westerly angle of Aroostook County. Its surrounding townships are Macwahoc on the east, Number One of Range Five on the north, Medway on the west, and Mattawamkeag on the south. A large portion of Molunkus Lake lies in the north-east part of the township, and another sheet of water nearly as large extends from the centre to near the southern line. The west branch of the Penobscot flows along on the south-east side of the town for a considerable dis- tance, separating it from Indian Township in Penobscot County. The population in 1870 was 61; in 1880 it was 76. There is a school building valued at $100.

Moro Plantation is situated twenty-four miles west of Houlton, on the stage line from Patten to Ashland. It has Merrill Plantation on the east, and Hersey on the south. It embraces Number Six of the Fifth Range of townships, Aroostook County. The boundary line claimed by Great Britain under the treaty of 1783 touches the northerly limit near the eastern side. Rockabema Lake constitutes the larger portion of its water territory. The township was originally settled in 1837 by Lewis, Bradford, and Brown. It was organized into a planta- tion, under the name of its lake, in 1850. The name was changed to its present one in 1860. The population numbered 107 in 1870, and 171 in 1880. It has two schoolhouses, and its school-property is valued at $900.

North Lyndon, a post-office in Caribou, Aroostook County.

Notch, a post-office in Wilton, Franklin County.

Number One, a post-office in Woodland, Aroostook County.

New Canada, or Casco Plantation, is Number Seventeen in Range Six, Aroostook County. Fort Kent adjoins it on the north, Wallagrass Plantation on the west, and Winthrop Township on the south. The Eagle Lakes lie in the townships on the east and south, and several of the feeding streams flow through New Canada. Lumber is the chief manufacture. The name truly indicates the former residence of the inhabitants, who are of French ancestry. The settlement was organ- ized as Casco Plantation Nov. 9, 1881. The population in 1870 was 83 ; in 1880 it had increased to 177. There are three schoolhouses, and the school-property is valued at $200.

Number Thirty-Three Plantation, in the northern part of Hancock County, is the terminus of the stage line from Ellsworth. It lies thirty-two miles north north-east of Bangor. At its centre is a pond which is one of the principal sources of the Union River. It was settled by Joshua Williams in 1810, and was organized into a plantation in 1840. In 1870 it had a population of 102; in 1880 it was 118 ; in 1884 it reached 125. It has a post-office (Great Pond), a lolge of Good Templars, and sustains schools and preaching.

It is bounded on the north by Scarborough, west and south by Saco ; on the east is the beach which is the chief attraction of this region. The Boston and Maine Railroad runs near the beach, its station being eleven miles from Portland. Old Orchard Beach Railroad, three and one-half miles in length, runs from the Boston and Maine station to Camp Ellis, at the mouth of the Saco River, where it connects by steamer with Biddeford Pool during the summer season. The place is well supplied during the summer months with stores and shops. Two papers, devoted to local and beach news, -"The Summer Rambler " and "The Sea-Shell," - are published daily in summer. Old Orchard has a schoolhouse and other school- property to the value of $4,000. The resident population in 1883 was about 500. Polls, 125. Valuation in estates, $500,000.
