GROWTH OF PORTLAND.
Since the commencemet of the Grand Trunk Railway which connects our city with the principal cities of Canada, there has been a marked increase in our population and taxa- ble property.
The population of the city in 1790, was 2,240; in 1800, 3,704 ; in 1810, 7,169; in 1820, 8,581; in 1830, 12,601; in 1840, 15,218; in 1850, 20,815.
The last census, (taken in the summer of 1854) made the population 25,418. The ratio of increase during the last four years, owing to the business depression which has affected us in common with all the commercial cities of the Union, has not been so great as during the previous four years. At pres- ent, an estimate based on the returns of the Assessors as to the male adults, would make the population about 28,000.
The valuation of the city in 1857, was Real Estate, $12,617,929
Personal Estate,
