Previons to 1858 the name Genesee street was substituted for Plank Road street, and the nomenclature of the original village streets entirely revised.
EIGHT YEARS AFTER.
To review fully the years of progress between 1859 and 1866, in regard to this city, would in itself be the work of months. How- ever, by adhering to the plan of periodical notice, the advances made by the city can be fully shown, and comparison with the vil- lage of 1853 be made easy.
Beginning with the newspapers, there were the Daily Enter- prise and the Weekly Courier published in the city. The roll of law representatives comprised the names of Messrs. James, Brown. Button, Sturtevant, C. II. Camp, Clark, Loveland, Gage, Lewis, Gillett, Gamble, Henry Hoyt, Harvey Joslin, D. W. Perkins, E. H. Powers, Thompson, Flanders, W. L. Webber. Smith, Wheeler, Herring, Wisner, and Dillingham-in all 23. The list of physi- cians met with a similar increase, and comprised the names of D. C. Bennett, A. Farnsworth, D. S. Hall, F. W. Herring, B. Hess, O. L. Mason, F. Massbacher, N. Osborne, D. B. Ross, A. B. Spin- ney, John Thompson, S. W. Turner, A. Van Dusen, Charles Von Daniels, and M. M. Wheeler; total, 15.
The banks were known as the First National, Merchants' Na- tional, Saginaw Valley, and C. K. Robinson & Co.'s. The archi- tects and builders were C. V. Moross, I. H. McFarlin, P. McEachron, Thomas Germain, and Wm. G. Dietz. Ezra Goddard, Sears and Carey were surveyors and engineers. The list of artists comprised the names of Goodridge Bros., James T. Randall, and Wm. Roberts. The booksellers of the city were T. E. Doughty & Co., Frey & Co., and Geo. F. Lewis.
The lumber manufacturers and dealers' list contained the names of Burt & Bros., Catlin & Sanborn, Estabrook & Mason, Jolin Hayden, A. H. Hunter, C. B. Jones, C. C. McLane, Seth McLane, C. N. Perry & Sons, Charles Post & Co., D. F. Rose, J. F. Rust & Co., T. P. Sears, I. E. Shaw, R. H. Weidemann, Geo. B. Whit- man, Sam W. Yawkey, and Wm. C. Yawkey. The planing mills of the city were operated by Gallagher, Mead & Deering, A. H. Mershon, Spencer & Newcombe. The stave dealers and manu- facturers were Wm. Binder, C. M. Curtis, F. A. Curtis, Chauncey Dutton, Wm. Roper, Humphrey Shaw, C. Ten Eyck, and E. Ten Eyck. Many of the above named lumbernien operated salt-wells in connection with their mills.
The hotels comprised thie Bancroft House, American Hotel, Ever- ett House, Farmers', Hibernia, Jeffers, Saginaw Valley, Sherman, Washington, Monitor, Bellevue and Canada.

CITY OF EAST SAGINAW.
The flouring mills in operation were the Mayflower and City Mills.
G. W. Merrill, Wicke Bros., Hill & Morris, Haskins & Gridley, were the proprietors of foundries and machine shops.
The principal merchants of the city were B. B. Buckhout, M. H. Allardt, Jas. S. De Land, C. H. Smith, M. G. Smith, G. H. Crouse, Wm. Barie, Elliot & Harrison, Stevens, Pool & Co., Lenheim & Iddings, J. T. Barnham, H. W. Wick Icin, I. R. Livingstone, R. J. Tappan, John O'Brien, H. N. Doty, W. I. Howard, W. N. Gray, Hugh Wallace, M. H. Gallagher, Edward Aiken, L. H. Babcock, S. T. Leggett, H. C. Silsbee, R. Lnster, H. Marks, W. H. Southwick, Boyd & Booth, H. R. Proctor, Barnum & White, and Wiggins & Clark.
The enumerated offices and business concerns with other commer- cial houses numbered 255 in 1866; increased in 1876 to 700 offices, stores, etc .; in 1878, to 800; and in 1881 to 1,160.
The church buildings in 1866 were St. Paul's, the Congrega- tional, Catholic, Methodist Episcopal, and First Baptist.
The Masons, Odd Fellows and Good Templars had each their halls. The Young Men's Association, County Agricultural Society, Colored Debating Society, Neptunc Boat Club and a literary so- ciety were in cxistence.
The advance of the city from the date of its incorporation to 1866, though it cannot be said to approach the progress of latter days, eclipsed all thic young cities of its time, Chicago alone excepted. The men who settled here were aware of what the future promised, and being so, determined to hasten development. How they suc- cecded is best related by the city of the present time.
ORGANIC.
The incorporation of East Saginaw as a village took place in 1855, when Norman Little was elected president; Charles B. Mott, recorder; W. L. P. Little, C. M. Curtis, A, H. Mershon, J. E. Voorhees, and David Lyon, trustees; F. R. Copeland and W. F. Glasby, assessors; S. C. Beach, treasurer; and A. L. Rankin, marshal. From that period forward the advancement. of the vil- lage was unquestioned. The members of the little municipal government exerted all their powers to raise it to that position which they knew it was destined to occupy, and within a period of four years, they saw the growth of their infant village rewarding them for all the care and attention bestowed upon it. From a wild camp-ground of a few enterprising men in 1850, it was converted into a small but thriving hamlet, and in 1859 received a city charter, when it assumed the robes of its ambition. The first city governors comprised W. L. P. Little, mayor; D. W. C. Gage, re- corder; Wmn. J. Bartow, comptroller; James F. Brown, treasurer; F. A. Curtis, marshal; C. B. Mott, John S. Estabrook, Alexander Ferguson, W. F. Glasby and G. W. Wilcox, aldermen; A. L. Rankin, city constable; Asahel Disbrow, Chester B. Jones, John

HISTORY OF SAGINAW COUNTY.
J. Wheeler, G. J. Dorr, Volusin Bude, S. B. Knapp, school in spectors. This and the succeeding year may be termed the era of great improvements; enterprise was a quality of each and every citizen, the salt and lumber interests claimed that high attention for which the oldest settler could scarcely hope, and within a few months East Saginaw was a city in every sense. The population in 1860 exceeded 8,000, when, but 10 short years before, 19 elect- ors assembled to elect 12 of their number to the public positions which the township of Buena Vista offered. The comparatively liberal spirit which characterized the pioneers of East Saginaw manifests itself to-day. The wise provisions made by the munici- pality to aid and encourage enterprise have borne good fruit.
In the following list are given the names of the elective officers of the village from 1855 to 1858, and of the city from 1859 to the present time.

THE CITY SCHOOLS.
The schools of East Saginaw are well conducted. They form so many testimonials of public enterprise in this direction. With a

liberality truly surprising the people did something even foreign to the principles of the republic, by the establishment of the Ger- mania School ; and this at a time when the question of abolishing German classes in the Chicago schools was being agitated.
The following statements, dealing with school statistics as well as with the educators of East Saginaw, are compiled simply as a his- torical summary. In the sketch, which concludes this portion of the city history, the various occurrences and persons connected with these schools are reviewed.
The following tables, dealing with the city schools from 1851 to 1881, are valuable, as they present to the reader at a glance the progress of the schools as well as the names of educators and direct- ors. The first table deals with the school census, the number of teachers employed, and in some instances the amount paid such teachers:

From what has been stated in connection with the history of the school buildings of the city, it is evident that the citizens have always taken a deev interest in educational matters. The following tables relative to the erection of the schools point to this fact, and prove
