On account of the ill-advised surrender of the regiment, at Murfreesboro, a number of the off- cers were dismissed from the service, which partially demoralized portions of it, and they were sent north to guard the frontier. Their lack of experience in the arts of war had more to do with the surrender than lack of courage, as the regiment subsequently proved by their be- haviour on the field of battle. There was but one field officer in this regiment from Dakota county, viz .: Samuel H. Ingham, quartermaster, dis. De- cember 1, '62.

FOURTH REGIMENT INFANTRY
originally commanded by Col. J. B. Sanborn of St. Paul, organized December 23th, 1861, ordered to Benton Barracks, Missouri, April 19th, 1862; assigned to army of the Mississippi, May 4th, 1862; participated in the following marches, bat- tles, sieges and skirmishes: Siege of Corinth, April, 1862; Iuka, Sept. 19th, 1862; Corinth, Oct. 3d, and 4th, 1862; siege of Vicksburg, Forty Hills, Raymond, Jackson, Champion Hills, assault on Vicksburg. capture of Vicksburg, July 4th, 1863; Transferred from 17th corps to 15th corps; Mis- sion Ridge, November 25th, 1863; Veteranized, January, 1864; Altoona. October, 1864; Sherman's march through Georgia and the Carolinas; Ben- tonville. March 20th, 1865, and Raleigh, April 14th, 1865; mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, July 19th, 1865, discharged at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. The organizing members of Com- pany C, were nearly all from Dakota county, and mostly from the town of Lakeville, where the company was formed. It was the outgrowth of a home-guard militia that had been organized there during the summer of 1861. They bought their own uniforms for home-guard purposes and were furnished arms by the state. Under the call for six hundred thousand volunteers in 1861, they responded almost to a man. retaining nearly their official organization. During the winter of 1861 and 1862, they were located at Fort Ripley, and went south with their regiment in the spring. The company built up a record they are justly proud of and were appreciated by their com- manding officers. After the battle of Altoona, they were complimentarily mentioned by Gen- eral Sherman.
The following names given by companies, rep- resent those entering the army from Dakota county.

dered upon the Indian expedition in the West under General Sibley, and was engaged in battle with the Indians July 24, 26, 28, 30 and 31 of that year. They returned from this expedition, and were ordered to St. Louis, Mo., October 7th, 1863; thence to Paducah, Ky., in April, 1864. thence to Memphis, Tenn., and assigned to the Sixteenth army corps, in June, 1864. The regi- ment participated in the following marches, battles, sieges and skirmishes: Tupelo, in July, 1864; Tallahatchie, August 7 and 8, 1864; the march in pursuit of Price from Brownsville, Ark., to Cape Girardeau, thence to St. Louis, Mo .; in the battles of Nashville, Tenn., December 15 and 16, 1864; Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, in April, 1865; The discharge of the regiment took place at Fort Snelling, Minn., August 16, 1865. Of the field and staff officers belonging to the regiment at the date of its organization, only one was from Dakota county, viz., Dr. Jerome E. Finch as surgeon, although a number were pro- moted from the line officers and the ranks. Dr. Percival O. Barton was appointed assistant sur- geon September 15, 1864, and was discharged with the regiment. Dr. Finch resigned in May, 1863, and now resides in Hastings. The most of the troops in the regiment from Dakota county were in Company F. This company was com- posed almost entirely of Dakota county men, and was organized by John Kennedy, who paid the entire expense for board and transportation of the men to Fort Snelling, to be mustered into service. One thing remarkable about this com- pany was the fact that so few of its officers re- ceived promotion, although they served through- out the war from date of enlistment. This was not caused by a lack of efficiency and bravery on their part, but from lack of openings above them. Some of the privates, however, fared better, as several of them obtained distinction and high rank, thus showing the rank and file of the company was of high order. The following persons from Dakota county, given by companies in their order, served in the Seventh regiment:
