English and Classical School.

The third year of this school will open

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8th, 1879, And close FRIDAY, JUNE, 18th, 1880. With a vacation of two weeks at Christmas, and another of one week at Easter.

The school embraces two departments, primary and advanced, the former sitting from 9 a. m. to 12 m., and the latter from 1:30 p. m. to 4:30 p. m.

IN THE PRIMARY DEPARTMENT

Instruction will be given in the English branches, Latin, French and Drawing,

IN THE ADVANCED DEPARTMENT,

Boys will be prepared for the Classical or Scientific Departments of Har- vard, Yale, Cornell and other Colleges, or will be given a Business Educa- tion. For the latter purpose a Department of Penmanship and Book-keep- ing has been added to the school. Girls will be prepared to meet the requi- sitions of the " Harvard Examinations for Women," the scope of which is exhibited in the following quotation from the Circular issued by the com- mittee in charge : "The Examination is intended as a careful test of pro- Aciency in a course of elementary study of .a liberal order, It applies the same standard of judgment in determining the success and excellence of the work offered, as would be used if judging similar work if done in Harvard College. It is, therefore, strongly recommended to all girls who wish to test their progress by a strict and publicly recognized standard, or in a range of subjects wider than the ordinary school courses include." This school, having been placed in communication with the committee, will be furnished with the questions in June, 1880, and will use them with such pupils as are prepared upon one or more of the subjects. 'The attention of parents desirous of educating their girls at home " by a strict and publicly recognized standard," is particularly called to this announcement,

TERMS:

Primary Department, $60 per annum; Advanced, $80 per annum; payable in three equal installments, Oct. 1, Jan. 1 and April 1. No extra charges whatever. Pupils received by the year only. .
