INTRODUCTORY.
To the inhabitants of a great city like St. Louis, no more important and interesting work, than a City Directory can be published. If the canvass be made thorough and accurate, it is a good index of the city's growth and general prosperity ; for it enumerates the churches, the banks, the school houses, the various social and business organizations, the names and occupations of the citizens, and by a comparison with the publications of previous years, shows the degree of progress that has been made. A. directory, besides containing innumerable and interesting facts, is in real- ity an indespensable adjunct of every hotel, counting room, office and work shop, and is daily and hourly referred to for information in regard to the location of some of the units who compose the great aggregate of life within the limits of the city.
The publisher takes great pleasure in presenting the eleventh volume of his Directory to the citizens of St. Louis, feeling sure that an examin- ation of its contents will not only show its general accuracy and com- pleteness, but will prove that our city has taken unparalleled strides in her sure march to the position of being the first in wealth and importance in the Great West.
While the oft repeated reference made by our people to our present and prospective greatness may seem to savor somewhat of vain boasting, they are the involuntary expressions of surprise and admiration educed by uncontrovertible figures, when we compare the number of names, given in the Directory from year to year, and note the rapid increase of popu- lation, and advance in every department. The present issue of the Di- rectory contains more names, and more business firms than any previous edition, and we point to the fact with that pride which actuates every citizen of St. Louis, when contemplating her past and present. Her march is onward, and her people are alive to every effort calculated to advance and perpetuate her greatness.
This work has been printed and bound in the city of St. Louis, at the office of the Charless Publishing Company, from which in future will be , published also, directories of Louisville, New Orleans, Memphis and other southern cities. The facilities possessed by this office for executing works of this nature, and all kinds of printing, are unequalled in the west, and the attention of the public is respectfully invited to the excellence of the work executed at this establishment.
It has been the aim of the publisher to make the present Directory as perfect as possible and worthy the support of its old friends and pat. rons. Trusting that success in this respect has been attained, and hop- ing for future considerations, the work is respectfully submitted to the public.
