LOUIS KLEINBRODT was born April 14, 1839, in Baden, Germany. He came to America in 1881, locating in St. Joseph. He was employed by the Hax Furniture Company for twenty years and assisted greatly in the growth and advancement of that busi- ness. He was the father of five chil- dren.

HON. ROBERT M. STEWART, one time governor of Missouri, a man of winning manner, brilliant intellect and compelling influence, whose great- est · achievements - were somewhat clouded by his personal eccentricities, began life as a farmer boy, born near Truxton, New York; March 12, 1815.


From the age of seventeen until the age of twenty, Mr. Stewart taught school in his native locality, and then


and from 1845 to 1857 he served in the state senate. In the latter year he, was elected to succeed Governor Polk, upon the latter's resignation.


Governor Stewart was elected dele- gate from Buchanan County to the fa- mous convention of 1861. He ardently supported the Union and decried se- cession, and he helped to save Mis- souri to the Union, an action which was of a national character. He was

one of the projectors of the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad, helping to sur- vey the line. It was mainly through his eloquence and logic that the right of way was secured.


Governor Stewart never married. His death occurred September 21, 1871, and there was a general suspen- sion of business in St. Joseph on the day of the funeral. His remains were laid away in Mount Mora cemetery and for many years his grave was un- marked, except by a pine slab, left there by the undertaker. But after
