Independent and Progressive

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of this city directory and the world's largest independent publishers of city directories, is in no way connected with any national association or directory "trust". Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory sub- scriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.

The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used 30 years ago, the Baidwin organization has ied the way to the production of a modern city directory to meet modern seiling and credit conditions.

Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individuai business concerns are invited to write for particulars concern- ing this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Baldwin directories wili stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your city directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1937 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.

We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for Subsequent editions will be issued the advancement of the community. promptly and regularly.

CHARLESTON South Carolina CITY DIRECTORY 1936

This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as origi- nated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the mod- ern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapting the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the pro- gressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business requirements.

SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK

The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:

1. The Miscellaneous Directory contains a great deal of useful in- formation concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials.

2. The Buyers' Guide, Civic Section and Professional Blue Book is made up of the advertisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and . professional card of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under head- ings which are descriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyers' Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.

INTRODUCTION

3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.

4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.

5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents and distributors.

6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.

7. The Rural Routes Directory, which follows the Numerical Tele- phone Directory, is used constantly in reaching rural residents with adver- tising matter and other mail.

SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES

The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :

Number of dependents under sixteen;

Designation of home ownership.

Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.

Numerical Telephone Directory. Nationally Advertised Brands.

In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beautifully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.

THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT

After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the "ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for advertising matter by issuing the House- holders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "Amer- ica's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

BALDWIN DIRECTORY CO., Inc.

EXPLANATION

All people sixteen years or over are listed.

Wives are listed with husbands, the wife being shown in parenthesis as follows: Smith Robt. R (Mary L.)

The number of children under sixteen years is shown after the wife's name as follows: Smith Robt R (Mary L) 3.

The (H), both in the resident directory and the householders' directory designates ownership of the home.

In case of a natural widow this fact is shown with the name of the deceased husband in parenthesis, whenever possible, as follows: Smith Mary L (wid Robt R).

The occupation and place of employment are shown as follows: Smith Robert R (Mary L) clk Hub Clothing Co.

The residence of each person is shown, "h" denoting a householder or head of the family, "r" denoting people in the home. Only one person at each home should be shown with the "h." Thus, a circular mailed to each householder will reach every home in the city.

Married women, engaged in some other occupation than housekeeping, are listed individually in additon to their regular listing with their husbands, as follows: Smith Mary L (Mrs Robt R) bkpr Henry Jones & Co r 210 Main.

Names in heavy type denote patrons of the directory and are usually the leading firms in each line of business.

Persons living outside the city limits and receiving mail in the country are marked RD.

The letters BD shown on some entries indicate Buyers Directory.

Colored is shown by a @. The publishers are very careful in using this, but do not assume any responsibility in case of error.

This directory contains all the regular departments of the modern city directory and many features used by no other publisher in the United States.

A numerical telephone directory will be found in the back of the directory listing each telephone according to number.

A Rural Route Directory will be found in back of this volume.

The classified business directory lists each firm according to line of business.

The numerical street directory lists each street alphabetically and each house according to number, with the street intersections as they appear. After each householders name will be found his telephone number. In case he has no telephone the nearest telephone may be found. The H denotes householders who own the house in which they live.

The buyers guide carries the printed messages of the city's leading business and professional firms arranged alphabetically according to classifications.

This directory shows the exact population of the city and environs at the present time.

ALBEMARLE

NORTH CAROLINA A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE

Albemarle is located in Stanly county, which lies in the Piedmont section of North Carolina. The county has diversified industries as well as diversified agriculture, and in this is extremely fortunate because the welfare of the county is not entirely dependent on one industry or one crop.

Mayor M. J. Harris

Albemarle is a town of home-owners and Stanly county is a county of farm owners. With a citizenship of the calibre which home and farm ownership indicates, it is easy to understand why Albemarle and Stanly county are ideal places to live, or to establish an industry.

Albemarle is a good place in which to live for many reasons. It is located in Piedmont North Carolina where the climate is regarded as ideal. In the summer, the temperature does not rise to an excessive point, and in the winter, it does not drop to a very low point. During the winter of 1936-37 the low point was 17 degrees. Rainfall totals approximately 50

10

ALBEMARLE, NORTH CAROLINA

inches annually which is sufficient to produce flowers, vegetables and other plants in abundance.

The majority of families contemplating Albemarle as a future home will naturally be interested in the schools, and in this particular Albemarle is extremely fortunate. There are four elementary schools within the city administrative school unit, and one large high school. The ele- mentary schools are conveniently located in various parts of the city, and the buildings are adequate, one of them being a new building. The schools are operated for nine months each year.

There are approximately 600 students in the high school, and the high school plant is one of the best in the state. The building was erected in 1924, and two wings and a modern gymnasium have been added to the plant in recent years.

One of Albemarle's Churches

It is well to point out that Albemarle schools have long been noted for their excellent faculties. The standards for a teacher have been kept at a high level, and the excellent records which have been made by stu- dents who have gone to college are evidences of the quality of work which is done in the local schools.

At Misenheimer, some 10 miles north of Albemarle, is located Pfeiffer Junior College, one of the best colleges of its type to be found in this sec- tion of the country. The new plant recently completed at a cost of over a quarter of a million dollars, is one of the best in the country. Annual

11

A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE

costs to students run as low as $160. If you have boys and girls who are approaching the college age, it would be well to investigate the possi- bilities of this institution.

In Albemarle there are fourteen churches, representing the various denominations to be found in this part of the country. The value of church property in Albemarle will run between $500,000 and $1,000,000.

Homes for rent in Albemarle are not as plentiful as they should be, but persons who are interested in making a permanent home here will find it no trouble to have a house built for them. There are a number of individuals in Albemarle who are continually building houses for rent and sale, and they are always glad to build and rent houses to desirable citizens.

Persons who are interested in buying or building a home in Albemarle will find prices on property are not excessive. There are quite a number of desirable homes which can be bought at reasonable figures, and there are a large number of desirable lots which are available for new homes. There are a number of apartment buildings in Albemarle, and new ones are being built every year.

Business Block on S. Second St.

If you are interested in renting or buying a home, we suggest that you write to the secretary of the Albemarle Chamber of Commerce, and " you will receive full information about available homes in Albemarle.

INDUSTRIAL POSSIBILITIES

Albemarle has much to offer industrial organizations which may be interested in locating in this section of the country. At the present time, we have two large cotton mills, consisting of 17 separate textile units,

12

ALBEMARLE, NORTH CAROLINA

HOMES

two large hosiery mills, one fixture and mantel company, two lumber plants, and two flour mills as well as quite a few smaller industries. All of them are being operated successfully, and their payrolls mean much. to the business life of the community.

Sites for industrial plants are available at reasonable prices, and some concessions of various kinds may be secured for manufacturers who ex- pect to employ local labor.

13

A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE

The town and county governments have always been eminently fair to industry in Stanly county, and since this attitude of fairness is one of the qualities of our citizenship, industry need have no fear of future governing bodies.

Power is available at reasonable rates. Albemarle has a municipal distributing plant, and power is purchased from the Duke Power Com- pany. Seven miles from Albemarle on the Yadkin River at Badin are two power dams which supply the power used in the operation of the Carolina Aluminum Company, largest single-unit aluminum plant in the world. At Norwood, eleven miles south of Albemarle, the Carolina Power and Light Company has a power dam, and there is another dam at High Rock in Davidson county just north of Stanly county. Approximately 30 per cent of the hydro-electric power generated in North Carolina, is generated on the Yadkin River within a comparatively short distance of Albemarle. Power is one thing that would certainly not be lacking to manufacturers who are interested in Albemarle as a location.

MUNICIPAL FACILITIES

Albemarle is a well-paved town, with the majority of the residential streets either paved with concrete or with gravel and tar.

The water system, adequate for a community of 50,000 population, is a source of pride to the citizenship of this community. A beautiful lake three miles from Albemarle is the source of supply. The water is given a high rating by the state board of health.

Work is now progressing on a new sewage treatment plant and an incinerator, both of which are to cost about $280,000. They will meet the needs of the community for many years to come.

Ample protection from fire is furnished by a well-trained fire de- partment which has adequate fire-fighting equipment.

Albemarle's electric and water rates to consumers are lower than the average. The profit from the sale of water and power makes it pos- sibl to operate the municipality without levying any taxes except for debt service. Albemarle's tax rate is $1.25 while the county rate is $1.00.

The Albemarle Telephone Company owns the local telephone facili- ties, and has spent thousands of dollars in recent years in improving their facilities. Long distance connections are made promptly through the Bell system. The Western Union Telegraph Company maintains an office here.

ALBEMARLE, NORTH CAROLINA

STATE PARKS

Seven miles east of Albemarle in the Uwharrie Mountains is located Morrow Mountain State Park. It contains 4,000 acres of mountain forests as well as some open land. Much of the park is virgin territory and is unusually beautiful and attractive. At the present time the Federal government is developing the park by clearing out the undergrowth, build- ing scenic roads and trails, a large swimming pool, cabins for rent to visitors, picnic grounds, and other requisites for a park that will draw thousands of visitors every year. Many Albemarle people are planning to build summer homes in the vicinity of the park.

ALBEMARLE'S ORGANIZATIONS

Albemarle has two alert civic clubs, the Albemarle Lions Club and the Albemarle Rotary Club. Both have memberships of between 35 and 45. In addition to a large number of fraternal organizations, there are a number of social clubs, including two golf clubs in the county, one at nearby Badin and one in Albemarle.

A

Albemarle High School

The Albemarle Merchants' Association has been operating for a long number of years, and is rendering a valuable service to the community.

The Albemarle Chamber of Commerce was organized in 1936, and has undertaken some worthwhile projects since its inception. It is gain- ing strength, and bids fair to be one of the town's most valuable or- ganiaztions in the years to come.
