Albemarle is the shopping center for Stanly county folks as well as two or three nearby counties. Albemarle's stores are as modern as can be found in the state.

efficient manner. The Carolina Coach Company which operates a line from Charlotte to Raleigh, via Albemarle. The buses are large and com- fortable, and connection is made with other lines at various points. A bus line also operates between . Albemarle and Salisbury.
AUDITORIUMS
Large high school auditorium as well as an Armory building with an auditorium of larger seating capacity.
HIGHWAYS
Paved highways lead into Albemarle from every direction. Federal highway No. 52 which, traverses the state from north to south passes through Albemarle. State Highway No. 27 leads from Charlotte to Albe- marle; and highway No. 73 comes from Concord through Albemarle and on towards Raleigh.
EDUCATION
Albemarle has five elementary schools, and one large high school, all housed in modern buildings. The high school plant is one of the best arranged and equipped in the state. Ten miles north of Albemarle is

Pfeiffer Junior College, an endowed A-grade institution, offering college courses at a total minimum cost to students of approximately $160 an- nually. There are approximately 2,500 students in Albemarle schools, and teachers have a nine-months term.

LIBRARIES
Stanly County Public Library has 8,500 volumes. The Library has experienced a steady growth in recent years, and under the guiding hand of a capable librarian, this institution is rendering a great service to Albemarle and Stanly county. The library facilities are widely used.
CITY STATISTICS
Total mileage of paved and graveled streets, 15 miles; miles of water mains, 16 1-2, with 1,320 connections. Daily pumping capacity of pumps at municipal water works, 1,500,000 gallons; present average daily con- sumption, 750,000 gallons. Fire department is modernly equipped and has an efficient company of fire fighters, thus insuring a low fire insur- ance rate.
FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
Albemarle has two banks, the Cabarrus Bank and Trust Company, and the First National Bank, both strong, growing institutions. Two Building and Loan Associations, the Albemarle Building and Loan Asso- ciation and the Home Builders Association, are both lending thousands of dollars each year for building and buying homes.
AGRICULTURE
Principal crops in Stanly county are cotton, corn, wheat, lespedeza, and trucking crops. Farmers practice the live-at-home principles of farm- ing, and this makes for a substantial farming class. A farm agent as well as a home agent, employed by the county, are both continually working towards improving. farming practices as well as housekeeping.
