PREFACE
In presenting Vol. XXIV of the Asheville, N. C., Directory we do so with pride, being convinced that the information contained herein is as accurate and correct as it is possible to make a publication of this kind.
Asheville has made remarkable progress during the past year. Numerous buildings, both business and residential, having been built, both in and around the city.
In educational advantages, Asheville is in the lead, having over twenty up-to-date school buildings and a corps of over two hundred teachers. The City owns a ball park which is one of the best in the country. Here the students have their athletic contests. Not only does the public school sys. tem rank with the best, but in and around Asheville are located some of the best schools in the South, among which may be mentioned Asheville University, Bingham and Ashe- ville School for Boys, St. Genevieve's College for girls, Cecil Business College and others.
At Asheville is conducted a summer Normal School with a large attendance from every section of the country.
In conclusion, we wish to thank the people for their cour- teous way of giving information, and the business men for their support.

ADVERTISERS" DEPARTMENT
Primarily a resort city Asheville, North Carolina, is situated within 24 hours traveling distance of any terminal point within an area inhabited by over fifty million people, or half the population of the United States. It possesses a cli- mate which is acknowledged the best for all year round desirability among resort places. The climate is both healthful and comfortable, extremes in temperature being practically unknown.
The population of Asheville, including suburbs, is conservatively placed at 60,000, 38,000 of this number dwelling within the city limits. The 1920 census gives a figure of 28,500, but the number of new homes built and occupied since this time fully accounts for an addition of 10,000 to the population
During the past four years a tremendous increase of residential districts out- side the city has taken place to accommodate a large number of families at- tracted by the climatic conditions and the scenery of this region. The tourist business, which is the most important asset in Asheville's commercial life, lasts the whole year round, having its main seasons, however, in the spring, summer und autumn. Great numbers of people returning from the extreme southern resort places stop in Asheville during the spring months, escaping the heat of the coast resorts and awaiting the end of severe winter in the northern cities.
In the middle of summer and particularly in August and September, Asheville is attractive to tourists from all over the South who have to escape the extreme heat of the lowlands and come to the mountain plateau of which Asheville is the center. The low summer temperature which allows the use of blankets every night is so great an attraction to southern people that a great many maintain summer homes in Asheville and vicinity,
The growth of the city, however, is only in part due to the increase in home building, as many millions of dollars have been expended by local enterprises in the enlargement and improvement of the business district of Asheville. Most

prominent achivements during this period have been the erection of the new Battery Park Hotel together with the removal of millions of cubic feet of earth forming Battery Park Hill, the erection of the George Vanderbilt Hotel as a cooperative enterprise at a cost of about one million dollars, and the creciton of the Jackson Building on Pack Square, which is 14 stories high, Asheville's first sky-seraper. The Battery Park operation, which was the greatest of the num- ber, has opened altogether five new streets and made available a good many acres of valuable business property.
Important in the development of the city is the building program undertaken by the City of Asheville which is to be completed largely during 1925 at a total expenditure of about three million dollars. This is to include new munici- pal buildings and the grading and paving of numerous new streets, Hilliard Street especially being of untold value in giving the city a new connection for traffic to and from West Asheville without crossing the most congested section. The city has also completed an excellent recreation park on the Swannanoa River about four miles above Biltmore, which aids greatly in the entertainment of local people and visitors. Here a large swimming pool and attractive dancing pavilion are maintained in addition to other amusement devices.
Another structure which is to be completed during 1925 is the new Medical Building at the corner of Walnut and Market Streets. This is being erected at a cost of $350,000.
The hotels of Asheville at the beginning of 1925 have a total guest capacity of 2,500, while the many inns and boarding houses of a high class can accom- modate about the same number. Several apartment houses also have sprung up during recent years and others are contemplated to further enlarge the city's capacity. The hotels having the 2,500 guest capacity are the Grove Park Inn, Kenilworth Inn, Battery Park Hotel, George Vanderbilt, Manor, Princess Anne, Langren, Jenkins and Swannanoa-Berkeley,
Next to the climate the scenic attractions of the city and countryside are important in drawing visitors and new residents. Set in the heart of the South- ern Appalachian System, thirty miles from Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains, Asheville is surrounded by a round score of peaks over 6,000 feet high and about sixty more exceeding 5,000 feet. These mountains are covered with a rich vegetation, the stand ot hardwood timber in this section being the finest reservoir of this important commodity in America.
These mountains with their forest covered sides form an important item in the conservation of water power, in Buncombe County, of which Asheville is the capital, there being 25,000 potential horsepower, only 3,000 of which has been developed. From the visitor's point of view they are a great attraction, offering motor trips of unequalled beauty together with hikes which well reward the industrious climber.
From the climatic point of view the ranges on all sides of the city aid in breaking hard winds and not infrequently in diverting from their course severe storms. While offering this protection they are at sufficient distance from the city itself to afford wide sweeping views of the countryside from any point.
A feature of which Asheville is not unjustly proud is its excellent water supply, derived from watersheds on the slopes of Mount Mitchell and the Craggy range. This water under analysis shows a remarkable purity and is so satisfactory to the taste that it is often drunk for pleasure by people who accustomed to lower grades of water find the Asheville supply wonderful. Even in the middle of summer it comes from the faucet as cold as it runs down the slopes of the high peaks.
Owing to the shortage which has been experienced in late summer, the city government has undertaken the construction of a basin on its watershed which will hold 180,000,000 gallons and also a distributing reservoir near Asheville with a capacity of 10,000,000 gallons. This work, undertaken at a cost of about $500,000 will be sufficient for the needs of the city for the next five years only, according to estimates made. Other abundant sources of pure water are still untapped so that Asheville faces no shortage of a serious or permanent nature, and the use of river water, abundant though it is, is not foreseen.
The city has the distinction of being the birthplace of scientific forestry in America and of good roads in the South. George W. Vanderbilt bought about 150,000 acres of land near Asheville over thirty years ago and here in addition

lo building a home that is considered one of the finest country homes in America and is also an architectural masterpiece, he put in operation scientific forestry and in this he included a school of forestry in which many present day experts obtained their grounding. When at his death in 1914 the larger part of this was sold to the Government it was converted into Pisgah National Forest and is now a permanent monument to the foresight of this great American.
As a direct consequence of his developing this property the first hardsurfaced highways in North Carolina were built in Buncombe County and this lead in road building has been maintained until Buncombe is one of the best paved counties in the entire South.
In Asheville, is the last resting place of William Sidney Porter, the O. Henry beloved by millions of Americans. In Riverside Cemetery he lies with only a simple marker at his head, the name "Porter" in large letters little suggesting the romantic tale which ended at that spot. From the sloping hill which is his last resting place opens out a view over the French Broad River and the hills beyond which surrounds the spot with an atmosphere of beauty and peace.
Another national character whose last resting place is near Asheville is Bill Nye, famous humorist. He is buried in a little cemetery not far from Arden on the road from Asheville to the South.
