These two graves are often visited by tourists and are among the principal points of interest surrounding Asheville. Other interesting spots frequently visited are: Sunset Mountain, overlooking the city, Mount Pisgah in the center of Pisgah National Forest, Mount Mitchelll, the top of eastern America, Chimney Rock, an unusual granite formation known all over the country as a point of interest, and many others. Good highways spread in all directions placing no limit on the travel to the motorist in Asheville. He can motor in two days to Cincinnati, Washington, Richmond or Savannah, and by pushing can make Jack- sonville in the same time. Within one day's time he can reach Atlanta, Knox- ville, Charlotte, Spartanburg or Greenville and other cities, many of these in two or three hours driving time.

The closer attractions offer the greatest inducement to motorists who spend a part of the year in Asheville and the many scenic highways which are grad . ually being connected into loop systems are always heavily traveled. A road which is to be improved during the present year will offer one of the best short drives in the section, passing over Sunset Mountain to Mountain Meadows Inn and Cravens Gap, and returning by way of Beaverdam Valley and Beaver Lake. The latter, built during 1924, is becoming a great attraction for Asheville resi- dents and visitors, offering boating and swimming to suit all tastes. A con- creted swimming pool at one end of the lake is very popular, protecting the less expert swimmer from the dangers of open water. A scenic drive around this lake and the adjoining development known as Lakeview and returning by way of Burnsville Hill and Woodfin, where the largest furniture factory in the South is located, is also very popular.

The latter part of this drive follows the French Broad River at a point where the major part of Asheville's industries are located, a spur track from the Southern Railway System serving this section. Two factories, the Carolina Wood Products Company and the National Casket Company have chosen this spot and a number of smaller industries are located here. Broad level land for factory sites, served by the railway, are available here, offering opportunities for further industries.

Another industrial center is one the Swannanoa Valley, where a large bleachery has been erected by the Beacon Manufacturing Company, of New Bedford, Mass. A large rock crushing plant has been placed in operation by E. W. Grove in the vicinity of Swannanoa and a number of lumber and planing mills are found here. Other industries, including the Hans Rees Tanning Company and the Asheville Cotton Mills are located in the vicinity of Asheville's freight terminal, where also a large packing plant with a capacity of 300 hogs and 50 steers daily is being completed by the Baker Packing Company.

The latter industry is expected to have a strongly beneficial effect on cattle raising in the county and surrounding territory as at present there is little market for the man who has only a few head of cattle to dispose of. The dairy industry has grown largely in the county, with two creameries, the Biltmore Dairy and the Carolina Creamery taking the lead and a dozen other retail dairies finding a market in the city, Strict standards for the inspection of both cows and milk gives an absolute safeguard to the users of milk in Asheville, while the

excellent green fodder available at all times of the year and the careful elimina- tion of serub stock gives a grade of milk renowned for its proportion of butter- fat.

Asheville has also, in The Miller Press, the largest directory and publication house in the entire South, and this concern has just completed a splendid new five-story building to take care of its printing business.

Agriculture has also received a new impulse and particularly truck gardening which is to a greater extent than ever supplying local and outside markets with home-grown vegetables. This development is generally considered ' of great significance in the development of a self-contained and independent community producing enough food for its own consumption and for export also. The de- velopment of apple growing has also come to assume important proportions, Buncombe County being third among the hundred counties of the State in number of fruit trees planted and bearing.

Although three new schools were completed last year and placed in operation, Asheville's public schools are still accommodating more children than they were planned for and steps are being taken to enlarge these facilities. At present Asheville has two high schools and fourteen grade schools while the 1923 en- rollment was approximately 9,000 students and the 1924 enrollment is expected to be at least one thousand more, following the proportion of increase for several years past.

Buncombe County has the same problem to face and is continually erecting consolidated schools doing away with the "little red school-house." This is made possible by the construction of good roads, trucks being furnished to carry the children from outlying districts to and from their classes. Every effort' is made in both city and county to furnish the best in the way of teaching and equip- ment possible. Outdoor exercise is an important part of school activities and classes in manual training in the high schools have met with notable success, wood carving particularly being executed with considerable skill by the students. Departments of home economics for girls are also conducted, exhibits from these classes showing considerable proficiency.

F

In spite of the heavy program of improvements undertaken by the city, Asheville's tax rate is extremely low, comparing favorably not only with other resort cities but with practically all cities of the United States having a popu- lation of 30,000 to 50,000. The amount paid by Asheville residents, including school and county tax is $2.04, while in Los Angeles the total tax is $3.96. Other examples compare equally favorable for Asheville. Rates for water, electric lights, gas and telephone service are also moderate.

An important feature of life in Asheville is sports. Golf particuarly is ex- tremely popular and can be played the year round on perfect all-turf links at both the Asheville Country Club and the Biltmore Forest Country Club, the latter on a site formerly part of the Biltmore Estate, Golf and tennis players are attracted to Asheville in the summer time by the cool weather which allows of strenuous matches in comfort. Many tournaments in both these fields are played regularly in Asheville,

Baeshall of a good order is played by the Asheville team, which is a member of the South Atlantic League. McCormick Athletic Field, only five minutes from the center of town, is considered one of the finest ball parks in any minor league. Football and basketball matches in season are popular with Asheville people.

A revival of horseshoe pitching, popular and inexpensive pastime which also places a premium on skill, has taken place recently and many courts have been built in the city parks and other spots.

The total property valuation for Asheville in 1923 was placed at $70,000,000 and this figure has been constantly increasing since.

Civic spirit in Asheville has displayed itself not only in the organization of several civic clubs which are well attended by influential citizens, but also in cooperating with other agencies organized for the best development of Ashe- ville's resources.

In this connection the Asheville Chamber of Commerce has undertaken a five- year program of progress designed to direct as much as possible the city's growth in the right channels and encourages a continued healthy development. The public support given this move has indicated that the citizenship of Ashe-
