Independent and Progressive
Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of this city directory and the world's largest independent publishers of city directories, is in no way connected with any national association or directory "trust." Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the indivi- dual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.
The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used 30 years ago the Baldwin organization has led the way to the produc- tion of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.
Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concerning this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION
Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your city directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1941 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the prep- aration of this volume and we are confident that the result is an au- thenic and useful city directory.
We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of your community. Subsequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.
This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the modern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit sys- tems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapt- ing the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business requirements.
SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK
The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:
1. The Miscellaneous Directory, contains a great deal of useful in- formation concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials.
2. The Buyers' Guide and Civic Section is made up of the adver- tisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional cards of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descrip- tive of the business engaged in by each firm. Th Buyers' Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.
3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.
4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates owner- ship of property.
5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non- profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed une names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents or distributors.
6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.
SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES
The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :
Number of dependents under sixteen;
Designation of home ownership;
Nationally Advertised Brands;
Numerical Telephone Directory;
Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.
In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beau tifully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.
THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT
After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the origina- tors of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin Direc- tory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.
BALDWIN DIRECTORY CO., INC.

KANNAPOLIS NORTH CAROLINA
By BILL WORKMAN
Managing Editor, The Daily Independent, Kannapolis, N. C.
-
Declaration of war with the axis powers, and the many re- strictions which followed, found Kannapolis-the world's largest unincorporated town with a population of over 26,000-in the middle of a great expansion building, a program that would make this city a model in planning, housing and civic beauty as well as in textile manufacturing excellence.
Charles A. Cannon, president of the vast Cannon Mills Com- pany, was determined to make Kannapolis a town which would take its place among the most beautiful. He is still determined to do that.
The great expansion program, which had been going on for several years, was postponed shortly after war was declared, be- cause of restrictions on construction. However, just as soon as possible after the peace is signed, this building program will be resumed and rushed to completion.
THE WAR EFFORT
In the meantime, Kannapolis men and women are getting down to business in helping win this war.
Most of the thousands of Cannon Mlils employees are engaged in making war materials.
The Kannapolis area has sent more than 1,500 men into the armed services, and they are fighting on all the war fronts of the world, and some are now in Ireland waiting for the second front against Hitler's armies to develop.
Every month, Towel Citizens put thousands of dollars into Uncle Sam's war chest through purchase of war bonds and stamps.
ACTIVITIES
Despite the loss of manpower to the armed forces and de- fense projects and extra time that men and women are putting to the war effort, Kannapolis is a beehive of activity.
Cannon Memorial Young Men's Christian Association-the largest association under one roof in the world, with more than ten thousand members-is the center of all activity.
Because of the gasoline and rubber shortage, which is keep- ing more people at home now, most of the association's clubs have decided to continue their programs throughout the summer months. In previous years clubs have operated only during fall and winter seasons.
Headed by General Secretary John T. Fesperman, the YMCA staff has geared its program to wartime conditions-and is keep- ing men, women, boys and girls busy.
Paul L. Peterson, director of the boys' department, this year launched the greatest playground activities for youngsters in all parts of the city. Several hundred boys are members of the score or more softball and baseball teams. The large swimming pool is busy day and night. Almost nightly some group goes to the YMCA cabin, situated several miles west of the city near the large Kannapolis lake.
The women's department, directed by Miss Bess Breedlove, is keeping its hundreds of members busy on war projects. For entertainment, various clubs have been organized, and are oper- ating the whole year.
Assisted by women employed at Cannon Mills Plant Four on the second shift, the women's department has launched a play- ground program, and 600 girls, aged eight to 15, gather at the various places two or three times a week for games and contests.
The playground program has been carried to Negroes for the first time. W. L. Reid, principal of the Carver School is di- rector.
The athletic department of the YMCA, headed by Kermit Hinson, has put more emphasis on competitive sports Several softball leagues for men and women are operating, along with one fast semi-pro circuit.
Well equipped in every detail-with two large gymnasiums; three large kitchens with facilities adequate to prepare a banquet for a thousand persons ; one of the largest libraries in North Caro- lina; large swimming pool-the handsome YMCA building is re- garded as one of the largest and finest in the United States. It was built three years ago at a total cost of more than $500,000, to replace the original building which was destroyed by fire.
SCHOOLS
Kannapolis schools, directed by Superintendent W. J. Bullock, also have been geared to the war effort.
They operate nine months out of every years. Eight months are financed by the State of North Carolina, and the ninth by the Cannon Mills Company.
Cannon High School, which each year has an enrollment of more than a thousand, has added a new $10,000 vocational plant, which is equipped to train boys in carpentry, electricity, sheet metal work and mechanical drawing.
In addition, the school boasts of one of the best bands in the state, directed by Arthur W. Rohr, director of music in the school system; an orchestra, directed by Mrs. Rohr; a glee club of which Miss Nellie Alexander is leader. Through cooperation of Cannon Mills Company, a diversified occupations class was launched last year. It will be continued.
Also in the system are five white elementary schools and one Negro elementary-high school.
Total enrollment for the whole system last year hovered around the 5,000 mark-and it is expected to be even higher when the schools open in the fall.
Assisting Mr. Bullock in directing school work are these prin- cipals: John L. Dupree, Cannon High school; Miss Naomi Till- man, Centerview; John Oehler, Jackson Park, the newest unit in the whole system and to which a new seven-room addition was built last year; A. D. Kornegay, McIver; A. W. Kelley, Aycock ; W. W Hartsell, Woodrow Wilson; W. I. Reid, Carver (Negro). All of the elementary schools offer full music courses.
Members of the school board are Chairman H. B. Robertson, L. J. Brown, H. L. Lipe, Zeb B. Bradford and Leon Smith .
Trinity Methodist Church is one of the oldest and largest in Kannapolis- home of more than 30 congregations of all denomina tions.
CHURCHES
Kannapolis has more than 30 churches, with Methodists and Baptists leading numerically. Lutherans and Presbyterians come next.
Churches established during the past few months include St. James' Episcopal, of which the Rev. Franklyn H. Board is priest; the Second Presbyterian, served by the Rev. William B. Heyward, Kirkwood Presbyterian, served during the summer by Bill Sum- mers of Davidson; Shadybrook Baptist, of which the Rev. R. F. Gardner is pastor.
In addition, the West Point Baptist operates a mission in the Bentley Heights community; the North Kannapolis Baptist con- gregation is in charge of a mission in Jackson Park. First and Second Presbyterian churches have just opened a mission in the Royal Oaks community.
Most of the ministers of the Kannapolis Ministerial associa- tion, of which the Rev. T. W. Fogleman, pastor of Franklin Heights Baptist church, is president.
ORGANIZATIONS
Principal civic organizations of the city are the Junior Cham- ber of Commerce, headed by President Thomas Trott; the Lions club, of which Frank Patterson is president; the Young Business Men's club, headed by President A. Curtis Brown.
