Independent and Progressive

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publisher of this city directory and the world's largest independent publisher of city directories, is in no way connect- ed with any national association, combination or directory "trust". Its poli- cies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.

The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used thirty years ago, the Baldwin organization has led the way to the production of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.

Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concerning this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publisher of your city directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1936 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.

We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of the community. Sub- sequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.

CHARLESTON South Carolina CITY DIRECTORY

1936

This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the modern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become com- pletely obsolete. In adapting the direc- tory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the pro- gressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern busi- ness requirements.

SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK

The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:

1. The Miscellaneous Directory contains a great deal of useful infor- mation concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials.

2. The Buyers' Guide, Civic Section and Professional Blue Book is made up of the advertisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional card of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyers' Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.

INTRODUCTION

3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parentheses, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.

.4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.

5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents and distributors.

6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.

SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES

The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory.

Number of dependents under 16;

Designation of home ownership.

Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.

Numerical Telephone Directory.

Nationally Advertised Brands.

In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beautifully bound arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.

THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT

After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke - they established a guaranteed home circulation for all advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the com- munity. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

BALDWIN DIRECTORY CO., Inc.

EXPLANATION

All people sixteen years or over are listed.

Wives are listed with husbands, the wife being shown in parenthesis as follows: Smith Robt R (Mary L).

The number of children under sixteen years is shown after the wife's name as follows: Smith Robt R (Mary L) 3.

The (H), both in the resident directory and the householders' directory, designates ownership of the home.

In case of a natural widow this fact is shown with the name of the deceased husband in parenthesis, whenever possible, as follows: Smith Mary L (wid Robt R).

The occupation and place of employment are shown as follows: Smith Robert R (Mary L) clk Hub Clothing Co.

The residence of each person is shown, "h" denoting a householder or head of the family, "r" denoting people in the home. Only one person at each home should be shown with the "h." Thus, a circular mailed to each householder will reach every home in the city.

Married women, engaged in some other occupation than housekeeping, are listed individually in addition to their regular listing with their husbands, as follows: Smith Mary L (Mrs Robt R) bkpr Henry Jones & Co r 210 Main.

Names in heavy type denote patrons of the directory and are usually the leading firms in each line of business.

Persons living outside the city limits and receiving mail in the country are marked RD.

The letters BD shown on some entries indicate Buyers Directory.

Colored is shown by a @. The publishers are very careful in using this, but do not assume any responsibility in case of error.

This directory contains all the regular departments of the modern city directory and many features used by no other publisher in the United States.

A numerical telephone directory will be found in the back of the directory listing each telephone according to number.

A Rural Route Directory will be found in back of this volume.

The classified business directory lists each firm according to line of business.

The numerical street directory lists each street alphabetically and each house according to number with the street intersections as they appear. After each house- nearest telephone may be found. The H denotes householders who own the house holder's name will be found his telephone number. In case he has no telephone the in which they live.

The buyers guide carries the printed messages of the city's leading business and professional firms arranged alphabetically according to classifications.

This directory shows the exact population of the city and environs at the present time.

New Bern NORTH CAROLINA

PAST

NEW BERN, second oldest North Carolina town was settled in 1710 by Swiss and German colonists. Baron Christopher deGraffenried, was their leader. New Bern was named for Berne, Switzerland and the town became the county seat of Craven County, named after the Earl of Craven.

Tryon Palace was built in 1767-1770 and burned in 1798, and only one wing still stands. Royal Governor William Tryon resided there, succeeded by Royal Governor Josiah Martin. There also, on August 25, 1774 met the first provincial convention in North Carolina, called in defiance of Royal Proclamation, second in America. Washington and many other notables were entertained there. Richard Caswell, first Governor and other first State officials under an independent North Carolina, were inaugurated in this first State Capital. The First State General Assembly met there on April 7, 1777.

James Davis established the first printing press in North Carolina here in 1749, and here was published the first newspaper, first pamphlet and first book in the province. It was also in this city that the first Incorporated Academy was established. Opened in 1764 and received a state charter two years later, the second private secondary school to re- ceive a charter anywhere in English America. Later the first free school of the province.

Here, too, the first ship in North Carolina was constructed and launched. The first celebration of Independence Day in North Carolina and one of the very first in America, took place here. Observing the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on the second anniversary, New Bern people joined in a spirited public celebration on July 4, 1778. New Bern is believed to be one of the first towns anywhere to celebrate George Washington's Birthday.

10

NEW BERN

New Bern is noted far and wide for its colonial architecture, some of which is called the most formidable in the nation and has received nation-wide publicity, and fifty places of Historic Interest have been marked.

PRESENT

A city of 13,000 population, with a trade area in five surrounding counties of about 200,000 population, New Bern is ideally located. Built at the junction of the Neuse and Trent Rivers, and only 35 miles from

-

W. C. Chadwick, Mayor

the Atlantic Ocean and 75 miles from the Gulf Stream the climate is unusually mild and balmy. The average temperature is 62 degrees, with a summer average of 79 degrees. The rainfall averages about 60 inches a year.

New Bern can boast of both rail and water transportation, and splendid highways lead to all points. Raleigh, the State Capital is 116 miles westward; Norfolk is 173 miles north; Wilmington 90 miles to the South and Richmond is 202 miles.

New Bern is located in the center of the richest agricultural areas of the South and draws patrons from a forty mile radius.

11

NORTH CAROLINA

New Bern is the County Seat of Craven County, and the seat of the seven county federal court district. Educational opportunities have long been exceptionally good, and there are churches of many denomina- tions. Civic clubs of numerous types are to be found.

The City Government consists of a Mayor and Ten Aldermen. A City Clerk, Tax Collector and Chief of Police, all elected by popular vote. The Water & Light plant is municipally owned and valued at $1,500.000.00 and serves rural customers in many sections.

There are two volunteer fire companies, with a Central Fire Station, and the members serve ably without pay. The fire loss is comparatively low.

Lumbering is a primary industry and marked progress is being made along agricultural lines. Seafoods are shipped to all parts of the East and West, and there are two plants of one of the largest manufacturers of men's clothing, employing many workers, located here.

"THE LAND OF ENCHANTING WATERS, holds attractions for those who love the outdoors. Splendid fishing, both salt and fresh water, can be had nearby. Hunting makes this section an ideal sportsman's para- dise for wild game such as deer, quail, turkey, duck, geese, squirrel and other game.

Swimming, yachting and beach sports, tennis and golf are among the chief diversions.
