Independent and Progressive

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of this city directory and the world's largest independent publishers of city directories, is in no way connected with any national association or directory "trust." Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the indivi- dual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.

The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used 30 years ago the Baldwin organization has led the way to the produc- tion of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.

Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concerning this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your city directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1941 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the prep- aration of this volume and we are confident that the result is an au- thenic and useful city directory.

We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of your community. Subsequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.

This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the modern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit sys- tems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapt- ing the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business requirements.

SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK

The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:

1. The Miscellaneous Directory, contains a great deal of useful in- formation concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials.

2. The Buyers' Guide and Civic Section is made up of the adver- tisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional cards of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descrip- tive of the business engaged in by each firm. Th Buyers' Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.

3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.

4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates owner- ship of property.

5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non- profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents or distributors.

6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.

SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES

The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :

Number of dependents under sixteen;

Designation of home ownership;

Nationally Advertised Brands;

Numerical Telephone Directory;

Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.

In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beau- tifully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.

THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT

After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the origina- tors of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin Direc- tory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

SALISBURY North Carolina

By Mrs. G. F. Conrad, Secretary Salisbury Chamber of Commerce

S ALISBURY, N. C., "Where Opportunity Greets You," a modern Southern City is located in the heart of the in- dustrial Piedmont Section of the South's most progressive State.

More than 19,000 people reside within its 5.19 square miles of incorporated area, while the suburban communities, includ- ing the towns of Spencer and East Spencer, place the urban pop- ulation at approximately 28,042. The trading area of 25-mile radius has a population of approximately 172,000. As a trade center, Salisbury has 252 retail outlets doing an annual busi- ness of nearly $8,000,000.

HISTORY

Salisbury and Rowan County share in the earliest history of this progressive State, and it is a history that the descend- ants of the earliest settlers and the people of today may well be proud to tell the world. The County was first settled in 1720 by Protestants from Moravia and a few years later, Scotch and Irish migrated here from their mother country. These were later followed in 1745 by a steady flow of Germans.

The County of Rowan was established at the session of the general assembly of the province of North Carolina on March 27, 1753. Thirty counties in Western North Carolina were later formed from Rowan County. The first Court-the Court of

Pleas and Quarter Sessions, met in Rowan in 1753, the same year of the organization of the county. The first court house was erected in 1756 and old records dating back as far as 1750 are still in file in the office of the register of deeds. The deed for Salisbury Township was granted February 11, 1755, and it is a point of interest to note that as early as 1757 Salisbury boasted of traffic laws.

Salisbury and Rowan County were especially active during the Revolutionary War and in 1781 Lord Cornwallis made tem- porary headquarters here. General Nathaniel Greene occupied Salisbury immediately before the arrival of Cornwallis' army. In the spring of 1791 George Washington visited Salisbury.

Near Salisbury today stands the remains of one of the South's most outstanding relics-"The Old Stone House"-a large building constructed of native granite, built somewhat in the style of a fort, and occupied by Michael Braun, the fore- runner of many of the Browns in the city today.

A national cemetery is located in Salisbury in which Fed- eral soldiers held prisoners by the Confederacy here, Spanish American War veterans and World War veterans are buried.

"Boone's Cave" where the pioneer Daniel Boone sought refuge from the Indians is located north of the city near the Yadkin River and "Old Trading Ford" on the Yadkin River, established long before the Declaration of Independence, is also north of the city.

West of Salisbury, in the graveyard of the Old Third Creek Presbyterian Church is the modest grave of Peter Stuart Ney, well-known school teacher who came to this country from France and is believed by many to be Marshal Ney, Napoleon's "right hand" man. He was supposed to have been executed for treason to Louis XVII of France, but many believe he escaped through conivance with the firing squad and then came to this country, taking up residence in North Carolina.

Andrew Jackson at one time President of the United States studied law in this city.

The mother of James K. Polk, eleventh President of the United States was born and reared in Rowan County.

Mrs. Frances Christine Tiernan-Christian Reid, a writer of national reputation-was a native of Salisbury. She was author of the volume, "The Land of the Sky," from which Western North Carolina derives the name "Land of the Sky."

GOVERNMENT

Since 1927 the city has operated under a City-Council Man- ager form of Government. The Council is composed of five members elected at large. The Council elects a mayor from its own membership and appoints the City Manager, who is the administrative head of the City.

Salisbury has a municipal water system ample to supply pure water to care for the city's needs; a modern sewer system and disposal plant; efficient police department with every mod- ern facility for the detection and prevention of crime.

The fire department has long been a source of pride to the city and through its efficiency has compiled throughout the past number of years, an enviable record. Salisbury won first place in the United States in class 6 (cities under 20,000 popu- lation) for best accomplishments in Fire Prevention.

Salisbury and Rowan County has a well organized health department ranking among the best in the South.

INDUSTRIAL

That Salisbury and Rowan County is a manufacturing com- munity of importance is evidenced by the fact that there are more than 70 diversified industries located here, manufacturing a wide variety of products and giving employment to approxi- mately 8,000 employees with a total annual payroll of $6,921,000.

Balfour Pink Granite, recognized as the hardest granite ob- tainable is said to be quarried exclusively near Salisbury and has been used in the construction of monuments and buildings throughout the world.

POWER

Salisbury is located at the center of the immense system of the Duke Power Company (including power dams and steam plants) which provides practically an unlimited source of power at exceptionally low rates. Anticipating possible demands for increased power in this area, an expansion program is under- way increasing the capacity of the Buck plant in Rowan County to 190,000 K.W.

AGRICULTURE

Rowan County is the leading county in North Carolina in di- versified farming. Sixty-five per cent of the farms are oper- ated by owners. Excellent soil and climatic conditions favor the growth of all kinds of vegetables, fruits and berries. Rowan leads the South in the growing of Lespedeza and leads the State in the production of wheat (in the number of acres and produc- tion per acre) Rowan County also leads the State in the pro- duction of Guernsey cattle.

Every important highway has high tension electric service bringing this convenience to a majority of farm owners and an active program is under way to extend this service.

DISTRIBUTION

Probably no city in the South has better distribution facil- ities than Salisbury. The Spencer Transfer, the largest freight transfer terminals south of Philadelphia are located at the Southern Railway's plant where merchandise is assembled from all over Piedmont North Carolina, unloaded and reloaded into through package cars and trains going to the principal commercial centers of the United States.

Exceptional facilities are offered by expressed service. Modern well paved highways radiating in all directions give additional weight to Salisbury's claim as a distributing center and afford speedy motor express service to all points.

A modern airport, equipped with all necessary service facilities and with one of the largest hangars in the State is located just three miles from the city. Terminal facilities are adequate to take care of large air-liners and modern lighting equipment has been installed so that the port will be in full service 24 hours per day.

EDUCATIONAL

Salisbury's educational facilities are of the best and most modern, having five white public schools, including a high school, and three negro schools, including a high school. Other educational institutions include : Catawba College, fully accred- ited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, offering a full four-year course in Liberal Arts. The Salisbury Business College, which provides excellent commer- cial and secretary training. Livingstone College (Southern As- sociation Class B) offers negro citizens a four-year curriculum.

The State Aid Program of Adult Education is operated in Salisbury and Rowan County under the supervision of a full- time director.

The Rowan County Public Library, located in Salisbury, has experienced a steady growth in recent years and under the guiding hand of a capable librarian this institution is rendering a great service to Salisbury and Rowan County. The library facilities are widely used.

RADIO AND NEWSPAPER

At Salisbury is located one of the five State Highway Pa- trol Radio Stations. This station forms part of the Highway

Patrol Radio system, covering the whole State. The City of Salisbury has a modern police radio system with radio patrol cars equipped for two-way communication. This system results in an extremely economical and highly efficient organization for crime control.

Radio Station WSTP, with 250 watts day and night is a powerful influence in the community. It is owned by the Piedmont Broadcasting Company and affiliated with the South- ern and Mutual Broadcasting Systems.

The Salisbury Evening Post is a daily and Sunday morning publication which has a circulation of 12,769 covering the city, county and adjoining territory.

CHURCHES AND HOSPITALS

Leading denominations are represented by 20 churches, of- fering a warm friendly welcome; good pastors and excellent music have made this a real church-going community.

Salisbury has two excellent hospitals, maintaining highly efficient staffs. One of these hospitals participates in the Duke Endowment and offers many advantages not available else- where.

RECREATION

Recreation is available to all. The Salisbury Country Club (membership basis) and the American Legion Country Club (open fee basis) offers golf, tennis, swimming, etc. Playgrounds for children are maintained by the city under the supervision of trained directors; theatres, professional baseball and softball leagues, give Salisbury and surrounding territory well rounded recreational activities.

CIVIC AND FRATERNAL ORGANIZATIONS

Nearly all of the leading fraternal organizations are rep- resented by strong local chapters.

Civic organizations include: Rotary, Kiwanis, Civitan, Lions and Altrusa Clubs. American Legion and Auxiliary, Woman's Club, Junior Woman's Club, Merchants Association and two Chambers of Commerce.

HOTELS

Salisbury has three modern hotels offering the visitor or tourist a complete hotel service. Excellent rooms, good meals and courteous service await you.
