INDEPENDENT AND PROGRESSIVE
Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publisher of the Salisbury City Directory, is an independent organization, in no way connected with any national as- sociation, combination or directory "trust". Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.
The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used thirty years ago, the Baldwin organ- ization has led the way to the production of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.
Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concerning this type of directory service. In the future as in the past Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION
Baldwin Directory Company, publisher of the Salisbury City Direc- tory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1935 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.
We have confidence in the continued growth of Salisbury and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of the community. A new edition will be issued promptly every two years in association with the Salisbury Post.
ASHEVILLE NORTH CAROLINA CITY DIRECTORY 1935
BALOWENN S RECTORY CFL AND TITE ASHEVILLE ALIVACATE
The Salisbury directory is a fine ex- ample of the ABCD type of city direc- tory as originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company. In the modern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become com- pletely obsolete. In adapting the direc- tory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization has been the pioneer. The excellent city directory which Salisbury now has is the result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business re- quirements.
SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK
The principal departments of the Salisbury directory are as follows :
1. The Miscellaneous Directory, which starts on page 15, contains a great deal of useful information concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials, and other valuable data.
2. The Buyers' Guide, Civic Section and Professional Blue Book, which starts on page 25, is made up of the advertisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, as- sociations and schools, and professional cards of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descriptive of the business engag- ed in by each firm. The Buyers' Guide, when properly arranged and dis- tributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the com- munity.
7
INTRODUCTION
3. The Resident Directory, which starts on page 55, contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthe- sis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the owner- ship of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.
4. The Householders' Directory and Telephone Guide, which starts on page 213, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, and gives the telephone number at each house.
5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands, which starts on page 253, contains the names of all business firms, pro- fessional people and non-profit organizations. properly classified. In this division are listed the names of nationally advertised brands of mer- chandise, with the name of the local agents and distributors.
6. The Numerical Telephone Directory, which follows the Business Directory is a valuable reference list in every business office.
7. The Rural Routes Directory, which follows the Numerical Tele- phone Directory, is used constantly in reaching rural residents with ad- vertising matter and other mail.
SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES
The following valuable information is used in the ABCD type of directory, but not in the old-fashioned city directory :
Number of dependents under 16;
Designation of home ownership:
Telephone Numbers on Street Guide;
Numerical Telephone Directory ;
Nationally Advertised Brands ; Rural Routes Directory.
In addition to these valuable additions, the A BCD type of direc- tory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more dur- ably bound. arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directorv stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.
THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT
After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for all advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the com- munity through the local Merchants Association. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin city directory also appears in the House- holders' Supplement, making the Baldwin directory "the greatest dollar- for-dollar advertising medium in the South" today.

Salisbury, N. C.
By
MRS. G. F. CONRAD Secretary, Salisbury Chamber of Commerce
Salisbury, N. C., a modern southern city, at the crossroads from the mountains to the sea and in the heart of the great indus- trial section of the South's most progres- sive State, a forward looking city with just enough of true Southern courtesy and tradi- tion permeating its ideas and ideals to keep one reminded of the noble history of the past, and to urge one on to greater achieve- ments-that's Salisbury, the capital of Row- an County, North Carolina, and one of the most representative places in the entire dis- trict.
This fast growing city is almost midway between Washington and Atlanta, on the double track main line of the Southern rail- way; it is the seat of the Southern's biggest shops and is the junction point for all traf- fic east and west in this state. Salisbury is within sixteen hours ride of New York, thirteen hours from Philadelphia, three hours of Pinehurst and the celebrated golf links, five hours of Asheville the Switzer- land of America and seven hours from the seacoast with its unexcelled surf bathing.
More than 17,000 people reside within its 5.19 miles of incorporated area, while the towns of Spencer and East Spencer, ad- joining, place the urban population at ap- proximately 23,000. The wholesale trading area of 25 mile radius has a population of approximately 163,000.
HISTORY
Salisbury and Rowan County share in the earliest history of this progressive State, and it is a history that the descendants of the earliest settlers and the people of today may well be proud to tell the world about. The County was first settled in 1720 by Protest- ants from Moravia and a few vears later Scotch and Irish migrated here from their mother countries. These were followed in 1745 by a steady flow of Germans.
The County of Rowan was established at
the session of the general assembly of the province of North Carolina on March 27, 1753. The first court-the court of pleas and quarter sessions met in Rowan in 1755, the same year as the organization of the county. The first court house was erected in 1755 and old records dating back as far as 1753 are still on file in the office of the register of deeds. The deed for Salisbury township was granted February 11, 1755. The City received its name from Salisbury, England-a little town 70 miles from Lon- dcn.
Salisbury and Rowan County were espec- ially active during the Revolutionary War and in 1871 Lord Cornwallis made tempor- ary headquarters here.
In the Spring of 1791 George Washing- ton visited Salisbury.
Near Salisbury today stands the remains of one of the South's most outstanding relics -"The Old Stone House", a large building constructed of native granite, built some- what in the style of a fort, and occupied by Michael Braun, the forerunner of many of the Browns in the city today.
A National Cemetery is located in Salis- bury in which 11,700 Federal prisoners held by the Confederacy in prison nearby are buried.
"Boone's Cave" where the pioneer Daniel Boone sought refuge from the Indians is located north of the city near the Yadkin River and "Old Trading Ford" on the Yad- kin River, established long before the decla- ration of Independence is also north of the city.
West of Salisbury in the grave yard of the Old Third Creek Presbyterian Church is the modest grave of Marshall Ney, Na- poleon's "right hand," who was supposed to have been executed for treason to Louis XVII of France but escaped through con-

nivance with the firing squad and came to this country.
Mrs. Frances Christine Tierman-Chris- tian Reid-a writer of national reputation, was also a native of Salisbury.
Andrew Jackson at one time President of the United States studied law in this city.
GOVERNMENT
The city received its first charter in 1793 and it was one of the last of the historical spots of the state to give away to modern ideas of civic and industrial progress. In 1927, by a vote of the people the city adopt- ed a new charter which provided for a City- Manager Council Form of Government. A City Council of five members is elected every two years and the Mayor is elected by the
Council from its membership. The City Manager is appointed by the Council and he is the administrative head of the city. How- ever, his office is subject to the control of the Council.
Salisbury has a municipal water system ample to supply pure water to care for the city's normal growth for many years; a mod- ern sewer system and motorized fire depart- ment; efficient police department and a well organized health department ranking among the best in the South.
The climate is mild with an annual aver- age temperature of 60 degrees. The climate, topography, water supply and altitude of 764 feet above sea level are important fac- tors in making health conditions excellent.

NORTH CAROLINA
EDUCATION ADV ANT AGES
Salisbury's educational facilities are of the best and most modern.
Located on the outskirts, but within the city limits of Salisbury, Catawba College owns 85 acres of land. On this ample tract are located Catawba's ten new college build- ings. The college is co-educational, a stand- ard four year college, holding membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in the North Carolina Conference and in the Association of Ameri- can Colleges. It is conducted under the auspices of Evangelical and Reformed Church but its religious attitude is not in the least sectarian.
Though only ten years old in its present location, it is serving the community educa- tionally in a broad, effective and public spir- ited way. Its faculty is on of the very strongest in North Carolina. The College confeis the degrees of bachelor of arts and bachelor of science, the latter degree being conferred upon graduates in business ad- ministration, home economics or music.
Eleven states are represented in its en- rollment of 378 students. The College also conducts a summer school, the enrollment of which for 1934 was 260.
Catawba College persistently strives to ap- proach its ideal: "Scholarship with Charac- ter and Culture for Service".
Other educational facilities include four elementary white schools and one high school, all in up-to-date buildings and two schools for the colored. At least three-quar- ters of an acre of ground is provided with each school, while the high school embraces over five acres. The Boyden High School for white is one of the finest in the State, having been constructed at a cost of more than half a million dollars and is modern in every respect.
The Salisbury Business College provides for commercial and secretarial training of the highest type.
Livingstone College, established in 1882; provides excellent educational advantages for the colored population of this section.
DISTRIBUTION POINT
Salisbury occupies a stragetic position as a distributing center. The city is located in
the most densely populated section of the State, having within a radius of fifty miles 626,000. In addition to the dense popula- tion the largest transfer sheds south of Phil- adelphia are located at the Southern's Rail- way plant here where more than 350 em- ployees handle the enormous volume of business coming into this plant.
The capacity of the terminals is 250 cars at one setting and the fixed daily distribu- tion is 225 cars. This transfer offers the shipper the most complete direct package car freight service of any city in the South- cast. Merchandise from the Southeast is brought to Salisbury where it is loaded in package cars for "through" shipment to principal cities in the North and East and West as far as Kansas City. Merchandise coming into the Southeast from the North, East and Middle West is transferred at Salis- bury for local distribution to all principal Southern markets.
An insurance value of the contents pass- ing through this terminal is three-quarters of a million dollars per day a policy cover- ing this amount, but it does not represent the actual value of daily freight movement which is much larger. This facility enables a shipper in the Salisbury area to put his goods in metropolitan centers within 12 to 24 hours earlier than can be accomplished at any other point in the State.
In express service Salisbury offers excep- tional facilities. Twenty-two fast trains every day carry express out of Salisbury in all directions. The passenger train service is such that express loaded on early night trains is delivered in such points as Wash- ington, Atlanta and Richmond the next morning.
The Spencer Transfer of the Southern Railway was established 28 years ago and has played an important part in the indus- trial growth of Salisbury and Piedmont Caro- linas.
INDUSTRIAL
That Salisbury is a manufacturing city of importance is evidenced bv the fact that there are eight plants located within the city. In addition to the textile plants. miscellaneous industrial enterprises numbering 42 are lo- cated in the city. Included in the 50 or

more diversified industries of the city are plants manufacturing yarn, pajama checks, sheeting, shirtings, tapestries, bed spreads, mattresses, finished textiles, bedroom slip- pers, shirts and wash dresses. Railroad hose, covers for textile rollers, lumber and its products, brick, granite, hosiery, flour, machine shop products, foundries and farm implements.
Salisbury's industries manufacture in ex- cess of 100 different products varying in value from a few cents to mausoleums made of Balfour pink granite quarried within the county with a value of more than $100,000.
GRANITE INDUSTRY
Near Salisbury is a large bed of native granite, pink and gray in color, of the most durable sort, and practical as a building stone. The granite also takes a high polish and is much used in ornamental work. The supply is easily quarried, gives employment to thousands of workers and finds a ready market. The supply is unlimited in extent.
That some idea may be given of the ex- tent of this industry in the county, glance over these facts and figures: from the south- east section of Rowan, there has been ship- ped within the past five years, a total of 15,701 cars of dimension stone, 9,577 cars of crushed stone, 3,023 of curbing, 1,193 of paving blocks, 767 of durex, 277 of monumental stone and 50 cars of ruble stone. The total weight of the above amounts to 707,460 tons and the value at the quarries amounts to $2,916,720.
The crushed stone will build a standard 18-foot roadway 217.61 miles long; the curbing will curb both sides of a street 217.52 miles in length; durex will lay 259,627 square yards of pavement; paving blocks will pave an area of 232,635 square yards and the monumental stone will build 111 mausoleums. If the cars required to haul the above products were coupled to- gether, a train 120.11 miles long would be formed.
TRADE CENTER FOR AGRICULTURAL TERRITORY
Salisbury is the trade center of a rich ag- ricultural territory with important highways
1
in every direction leading into the city. Sixty-five per cent. of the farms are operated by owners which contributes to the prosper- ous rural farm life. Every important high- way has high tension electric service bring- ing this convenience to a majority of the farm owners and an active program is under . way to extend this service. The County has exceptionally well balanced agriculture di- vided between cash crops, food and feed crops. Rowan County supplies a large vol- ume of fruit, poultry and dairy products. Market facilities for these products are pro- vided in Salisbury and there is room for ex -* pansion in the production of poultry and dairy products.
RELIGIOUS, FRATERNAL AND CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS
The religious inclination of the com- munity is evidenced by the fact that the leading denominations are represented by eighteen churches with a combined mem- bership of more than 7,500.
