Has 100 miles of cement sidewalks and 70 miles of curbing. Has 72 miles of sewerage and 13 miles of storm sewers. Has a $1,000,000 water works system. Daily capacity, 10 million gal- lons; reserve capacity, 60 million gallons. Has a well equipped and efficient Fire Department; Gamewell Fire Alarm System installed. Has 142 manufacturing plants, including cotton mills, cotton gin machin- ery, agricultural implements, automobile tires, wagons, caskets, cot- ton seed products foundries, etc. 400 cotton mills within a radius of 100 miles which give employment to 80,000 people. Payroll approxi- mately $30,000,000 annually. 4 railroads-3 steam, 1 electric. 62 pas- senger trains a day diverging in 8 different directions. Interurban passenger and freight service. Is the headquarters of the "Lines East" of the Southern Railway System. Is the center of the biggest hydro- electrical development in the United States. Is the home of the Pied- mont Fire Insurance Company. Surplus, $352,000. Has 10 public school buildings. Pupils enrolled, 7,350; 132 teachers. Has 56 churches (white) of all denominations, 31 colored churches. Has Queen's Col- lege for the young ladies. Represents an investment of over $300,000. Is the home of Horner Military School for boys. Has 10 other private schools and colleges. Has 5 National banks, 2 State banks, 2 Trust Companies and 1 savings corporation with a combined capital of $2,331,150, surplus and profits $2,261,528, deposits $10,673,314, loans $11,663,783. Has 4 Building & Loan associations with 62,000 shares in force. A million dollars distributed annually. Has 7 hospitals and sanatoriums. Has 5 libraries with over 20,000 volumes. Has 5,800 telephones, including farmer's stations. Has a new $250,000 Federal Building and Post Office. Post Office receipts, 1916, $200,314. Has fine, modern Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A. buildings. Has a $250,000 Masonic Temple. The only one of its kind in the South. Is the home of 700 traveling men. Has 2 daily papers with full Associated Press service. Is the second largest distributing point for automobiles and automobile accessories in the South. Has many large jobbing houses and the number is constantly increasing. Has modern, up-to-date re- tail stores whose stocks compare most favorably with those of stores in cities many times larger. Commission Form of government. Cham- ber of Commerce of 625 members. The construction force represents the business integrity of the city.
