PREFACE

N submitting Volume I of the Hendersonville City Directory, wish to offer an apology for any names or valuable information that has been overlooked. This book being the first of its kind for the"town,"it has proven to be no little task, but it is safe to say the next one will be easier to compile and corrections and additions can be given careful attention.

The observing eye has had the pleasure of seeing quite a few new buildings going up, and extensive repairs being made in Hendersonville and its suburbs within the past six months; considerable effort is being put forth by those in authority as well as by its citizens to so arrange and manage the affairs of the town to the comfort and best advantage of strangers, and all, coming into their midst.

With the excellent opportunity for the study of nature with so many of her resources; with the de- lightful climatic conditions as well as access to numerous springs with their pure, refreshing crystal waters Hendersonville is unequaled as an educational center, a fact evidenced by its number of well equipped schools, advertisements of some of its colleges will be found elsewhere in this book.

Hendersonville's location upon a broad level table- land around which winds the Ocklawaha; its railroad facilities and the eagerness of the officials of this means of transportation, to be co-operative for the good of the town and surrounding country makes it a very desirable spot for the locating of manufacturing plants, whose payrolls would add much as an attraction to bring people here to buy land, build homes and help make it a stronger all-the-year-round town as well as a better resort town. There are thousands of oppor- tunities here awaiting the man to develop them.

In conclusion I want to thank the patrons of this book and the public in general for its courteous treat- ment. IDA ELIZABETH MAXWELL.

you will learn that the best domestic coal is the cheapest in the end. We handle the genuine Jellico Block. We hand- fork all the dust and slack out of it, and put two thousand honest pounds into every ton that leaves our yards. It really is not economy to buy dust and slate, even at a low price.

and go to W. H. HAWKINS & SON if you need glasses. I never knew what eyeglass comfort was until a month ago-if the lenses were right there was always something the matter with the nosepiece; it either pinched or was everlastingly falling off.

"But a friend suggested that I try HAWKINS & SON, and. after some persuasion, I went down to their store at 413 N. Main St., just across from the City Hall. I'll never be sorry. They fitted me with a pair of those new invisible bifocal lenses that look just like ordinary glasses. I can use them to read or sew or to wear on the street and they are so comfortable I often forget that I am wearing glasses at all."

IS AN ECONOMICAL INVESTMENT

BY GOOD AUTHORITY-It is proven that what you save in health, strength and servant hire will in a few months pay for an up- to-date system.

GOOD PLUMBING-Consists of a group of substantial and art- istic fixtures, such as Bath Tubs, Lavatories, Closets, Sinks, Pipes, Valves, etc., arranged in a practical manner as to be perfectly sanitary and easy of operation, so that by a simple twist of the wrist cold or hot water is furnished as desired for various uses that are needless to enumerate here.

·

WE CAN FURNISH-And install for you a good and satisfactory Plumbing System at an exceedingly low price on terms that are very reasonable. We would like very much to talk this matter over with you. Just say the word and we will get on the job and give you a complete estimate without cost or obligation on your part, telling to the very cent what the amount of installation will be.
