SYSTEM OF NUMBERING STREETS
This map, made from an actual survey, shows the Court House to be the center, thus making the distance to the City Limits one mile in all directions.
Main and all streets parallel with it run North and South, that part South of the Court House and First Avenue known as South Main, North of the Court House and First Avenue, North Main, etc.
All Avenues run East and West, crossing Main, and are known as North Avenue East or North Avenue West; South Avenue East or South Avenue West, as the case may be.
Since First Avenue and Main Street is the point upon which the town bases its Numbering System, one can readily see the number of the block in which they live.
The numbering of the Avenues begins at the Court House, going as high as Ninth Avenue.
The blocks on the cross streets are regulated by the number of the Avenue South of them. For in- stance, if you are located in the block between Third and Fourth Avenue you are in the 300 Block, between Fourth and Fifth Avenue you are in the 400 block. The blocks on the Avenues begin their numbering at Main Street.
All numbers on the houses on the right-hand side of the Avenue or street as you go from the point of numbering should be EVEN numbers, and all on the left-hand ODD numbers.

HISTORY SINCE 1841
The year 1838 marks the beginning of our present county of Henderson. After the surveying and fixing of its boundaries, the next important step was to decide upon the proper location for its new Court House. As there were two places uppermost in the minds of the people it was necessary to leave the matter to a vote of the populace, therefore, in the year 1841 the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina passed an act providing that an election be held at each of the precincts in the county on the last Thursday in January-the Sheriff of the County to widely advertise the same ten days prior-the Sheriff to also appoint two Judges for each election precinct, the one to be taken from the Eastern and the other from the Western section of the County who were duly sworn to conduct the election fairly and according to the manner which elections were held in the State at that time.
In this election each citizen of Henderson County qualified to vote for Members of the House of Com- mons were allowed to put in one ballot, or a piece of paper, describing the place desired by him, thus making it possible for the Judges of said election and the Sheriff of the County to ascertain with certainty the location really desired. After comparison of the returns from each precinct, the Sheriff together with two Commissioners selected by him pronounced the point having the greatest number of votes. It was decided that if the point thus selected was nearer to the Buncombe Turnpike Road (now our Main business street) in Henderson, than to the French Broad River, the place where Horse Shoe is now located, George Allen, Andrew Maxwell, Jr., David Rees, John Davis and James Spann were to be appointed as Commis- sioners for the purpose of procuring by donation or purchase, not less than fifty acres of land including the point designated, or within one mile thereof, said land to be conveyed to the Chairman of the County Court
119
of Henderson, and his successors in office, for the use of said county, upon which land a town to be called Hendersonville was to be laid off by the Commis- sioners or a majority of them.
It was the duty of these Commissioners after advertising for thirty days, and having laid off the lots on said land, to sell the whole or such portion of them, as they deemed most conducive to the interest of the County, upon a credit of one and two years, the said Chairman of the Court making title whenever the pur- chase money shall have been paid, reserving such lots as were necessary for the erection of the public build- ings, and the money thus raised to be disposed of by a majority of the Justices of Henderson County for pub- lic purposes.
Thus we have the starting of the town of Hen- dersonville.
It will be interesting to note the names of those, today connected with the affairs of the town and county, who are descendants of those good men, the Commissioners, who assumed the burden of the plan- ning and laying out of our present Hendersonville.
George Allen leaves behind him, to help carry on the good work started in 1841, his Great Grandson, Jas. E. Shipman, Attorney, and member of the Law Firm of Smith, Shipman & Bridges.
Andrew Maxwell, Jr., is today represented by his son, Jonathan Maxwell, who is now quite an old man, but one who is blessed with an excellent memory and can make the hours pass away rapidly at his very old home, about three miles east of here on the Blue Ridge Road, Rural Route No. 1, with stories of the doings of the people of this section as far back as the days of the Whipping Post. His son, John Albert Maxwell, is at present filling the office of Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners for Henderson County.
Jas. Spann has contributed to Spartanburg and vicinity the Honorable Major Spann, with his excellent family. Miss Minnie Spann, teacher in the Asheville Graded School, is a granddaughter.
120
John Davis leaves a granddaughter, Mrs. J. M. Waldrop, 1011 North Fifth Avenue, West, this city, the members of whose family are actively engaged in the affairs of the town today.
There are, perhaps, many others whom I could ยท mention, but space and time at this compilation will not permit.
