PREFACE

(Furnished by Chamber of Commerce.)

A city strategically situated on the Cape Fear River, blessed by nature with a variety of resources and kept up-to-date by the hand of man. It possesses both trunk line rail and deep water trans- portation, which gives it low freight rates and permits quiek freight movements in great volume.

It is both important as a port and an industrial eity, while it is the pivotal point for a rich and large agricultural area, and is the trading center for fully 350,000 people, the eity being their nearest, as well as largest market.

As a port, it possesses a fresh water harbor thirty miles from the bar. Iee is an unknown quantity in the river, which has a deep water channel, up and down which go big ocean steamers, bound for Europe, Latin America and other foreign shores.

Its exportations and importations are large and ever growing, which mark a successful port. As a cotton port it yearly sends forth upward of 500,000 bales per year, and this record is evidently going to be surpassed. Its imports eover a large field in variety and come from practically every quarter of the globe.

Within the past year or two the population of Wilmington has increased in a tremendous way, and it is now a city of over 45,000 population, housed in comfortable homes. To aeeommodate the in- ereasing population not only did individuals build homes, but the . citizens formed what is known as the Vietory Home Company, with an authorized capital of a million dollars and PAID IN OF $250 .- 000.00 to erect houses, which object has been successfully carried out.

Regardless of conditions following the war the year 1921 has already witnessed preparations for big building operations. Among recent enterprises located here are a large new fertilizer factory, erected by Morris & Company, and a large readi-eut house plant of the Aladdin Company, thus supplementing the city's already large number of such industries.

The natural gateway of North and South Carolina, intermediate between the whole territory and Richmond.

Wilmington is North Carolina's seaport city, the gateway of her commerce and trade. North Carolina is a vast State in area, larger than New York or Pennsylvania, and almost as large as New Eng- land. Wilmington is the natural distributing point for North Caro- lina and parts of South Carolina and Georgia. Think what it would mean if all of New England had only one such distributing seaport, and it will then be realized why Wilmington must grow and is grow- ing to meet the demands of this vast territory whose bountiful natural resources have hardly been touched.

6

PREFACE-Continued.

From the Middle West the Panama Canal is in more direet com- munication via Wilmington than by any other South Atlantic sea- port, and eargoes to and from Wihnington will not be subject to the dangers of Cape Hatteras.

Wilmington is the center of the greatest vegetable producing dis- triet in the United States. A few years ago no strawberries were raised except for domestie use; now WILMINGTON IS THE LARGEST STRAWBERRY RAISING DISTRICT IN THE WORLD. It is the LARGEST LETTUCE PRODUCING DISTRICT IN THE WORLD, and next to the largest peanut market.

Wilmington's outlets by rail and water are the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line systems, Wilmington, Brunswick and Southern Railway, the Clyde Steamship Line to New York.

Wilmington has a wonderful elimate ; no extreme heat or extreme cold. Average summer temperature, 78 degrees; average winter temperature, 48 degrees. The normal rainfall is 51.05 inches ; aver- age annual clear days, 132 (New York, rainfall 44 inches ; clear days, 118; New Orleans, rainfall 57 inches; clear days, 109). The mild climate and diversified opportunities make this city and section a haven for homeseekers.

The Wilmington district is one of the greatest trucking regions in the United States, and the yield from this early crop reaches the sum of $3,000,000.00 annually.

Nearest Atlantic port to the Ohio gateways, and nearer Cinein- nati than Charleston by fifteen miles and Savannah by thirty miles.

Largest distributing point south of Baltimore for products of the Standard Oil Company.

Has immense terminals that ean load sixteen ocean-going ships at one time, providing them with over 600,000 square feet of ware- house space.

Has two immense shipyards, properties to be converted into in- dustrial and civil uses. Had the honor of possessing the only Gov- ernment owned steel shipyard in South, and first Government owned concrete yard in country.

The commerce on the Cape Fear river at and below Wilmington averaged 589,318 tons, with an average valuation of $46,067,235.95 for the seven calendar years ending in 1920. When it is remem- bered that this period covers the five years of the world war, when shipping was greatly discouraged, the showing made by the port is very remarkable.

One of the charter members of the South Atlantic Maritime Cor- poration, and will soon have steamer lines reaching Latin America.

South of Hatteras, thus assuring safety to vessels from Latin America and other countries to the south of the United States, and occupies strategie position of advantage to such countries.

River never has ice, which permits year 'round navigation, and climate is never too cold to make work outdoors a hardship or dis- comfort.

Has many fertilizer factories and a number of fish factories, em- ploying thousands of men.

Has handsomest custom house in the South, which has just been placed in commission.

PREFACE-Continued.

Next terminal of inland waterway canal, this link being from Beanfort to the Cape Fear river.

Wilmington has two immense cotton compresses and a marine railway. The steel shipyard operated during the war by the George A. Fuller Company is being converted into an industrial centre. The concrete shipyard property is owned by the city and will be developed into municipal wharves and public terminals and ware- houses.

With both water and rail transportation, thus affording quick hauls and low freight rates, and near the scenes of raw material, Wilmington is a splendid spot for manufacturing industries. Two big railroad systems-the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line-place the city near the great coal fields and the iron pro- ducing zones.

Wilmington has manufacturing plants of many kinds, cotton and hosiery mills, wood and metal works, cement concerns, cotton fac- tories, candy factories, readi-ent house plant, modern machine shops, many big fertilizer factories, saw mills, oils stations, etc.

One packing plant in operation. One, costing half million dol- lars with a slaughtering capacity of one thousand hogs per day, is now complete and ready for operation.

Second distributing point for fertilizer in the South. HIas many immense fertilizer factories and two others have recently been bnilt.

Leading banking center of State, its banks having capital and surplus June 1, 1922. $3,165,700.30; deposits, $17,058,067.45; total resources, $26,033,125.06. Growing steadily all the time.

Jobbing business goes over $80,000,000 annually, and retail mer- chants do giant business, as city is trading mecca for a section of over 350,000 people.

City of big weekly pay rolls. Annual payrolls upward of $15,- 000,000 distributed among thousands of employes.

Headquarters of Atlantic Coast Line System, employing about a thousand men and women.

Wonderful all year around climate and a health record praised by the United States Government

The Wilmington section has crop growing days to the member of 240, which is the equal of Northern Mexico, though with the ad- vantage of an ample and equitable rainfall.

City of fine streets, beautiful homes, great churches and modern schools. In a county netted by good roads, the superior not to be found anywhere.

Home office of North Carolina Land Owners' Asssciation and other big institutions that are working and spending money to make North Carolina bigger and greater.

Place of modern amusements with best beach resorts on South Atlantic Coast within thirty minutes' ride of the city.

Most popular beaches on South Atlantic almost on threshold of city.

A metropolis with a Chamber of Commerce aroused to the city's great advantages and eager to answer all questions and extend hearty co-operation. Write the Chamber of Commerce for any in- formation desired.
