PREFACE
Furnished by the CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
Wilson is the center and metropolis of a vast territory that is being rapidly developed; in which there are no large cities. In the Wilson territory are located scores of pros- perous, rapidly developing small cities and towns.
Location-Wilson is located in the heart of Eastern North Carolina, the garden spot of the world. It is on the main lines of the Atlantic Coast Line and Norfolk-Southern Rail- road Companies with twenty-six passenger trains daily. These railroads traverse every part of the State. In addition, a splendid system of hard-surfaced and improved highways radiate from Wilson over Eastern Carolina. Therefore, Wil- son is the home of a great number of traveling men. Wil- son, on account of its location, is the logical point for dis- tributing houses and jobbers in this section of the State, and is rapidly forging to the front along those lines.
Population, Size-Wilson city population for 1920 govern- ment census was 10,612; estimated 1925 population, 15,100. The population of Wilson County is 38,000. The citizenship of Wilson County is practically 100 per cent American, there being only 62 foreign born white persons in the county. The population has increased thirty-five hundred in 1900 to the above figures in 1920.
Climate-Wilson is a delightful place to live in, the win- ters are mild and the summers pleasant. The climate of Wil- son, according to statistics for the past five years, gave 295 days out of the year which can be used for outside work.
Government-Wilson is governed by a Mayor and Board of Aldermen of five, one from each ward, who hold their office for two years, and are elected by the people.
Educational-Wilson has an excellent system of free pub- lic schools. Wilson County has the most modern system of

rural consolidated schools in North Carolina, and its system has been adopted by the State Board of Education as a model for the other counties, every township, of which there are nine in the county, now has a modern two-story brick school- house. Wilson is the home of the Atlantic Christian College, the largest class A college in Eastern North Carolina. Wil- son County was the first county in the State that voted a special county school tax.
Valuation-Wilson assessed valuation for 1924 was $20,- 000,000.00. The total valuation, real and personal for Wil- son County in 1924 was $50,000,000.00.
Taxes-1924 city tax rate is 58 cents on $100.00; 1924 county tax rate $1.94 on $100.00 for all purposes.

Public Library-Wilson has a modern Public Library that is under the auspices of the Woman's Club.

Organizations-Wilson has a live Retail Merchants' Asso- ciation, Woman's Club, Professional and Business Women's Club, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Lion's Club, as well as other various organizations.
Industrial-Wilson offers exceptional opportunities to manufacturers due to railroad facilities splendid labor and living conditions cheap freight rates and contented citizen- ship. Wilson has more than 300 stores, both wholesale and retail, covering every line of business. We are continually fighting freight rates so as to make Wilson more attractive to distributors, and we have succeeded in eliminating the ad- vantage the so-called Virginia cities had over us for the past forty years, there is no advantage for a jobber doing busi- ness in Eastern Carolina to be located in Virginia, in fact, he is at a disadvantage. Wilson has largest wagon works in the South. Three fertilizer factories. Two cotton oil mills. Three cotton and knitting mills and various other industries.
Tobacco-Wilson, North Carolina, the logical distributing center for Eastern North Carolina, is now the largest loose leaf tobacco market in the entire world, a fact that every citizen is proud of, and was brought about for the reason that the warehousemen and buyers here have always played

fair and honorable with the tobacco growers, every grower knowing that sales are going on in four warehouses at the same time he will be given a square deal here, and that his tobacco will bring the highest prices.
The first sale of leaf tobacco, and that at public auction, the method by which we are still selling tobacco and will continue to sell tobacco, it being the fairest way for both seller and buyer, took place on Tuesday, September 10, 1890. From a small start in a building holding 50,000 pounds, Wil- son has grown to a market with six immense warehouses with a capacity of over 1,000,000 pounds daily, and this year the tobacco companies have furnished four sets of buyers, mean- ing that sales are going on in four warehouses at the same time. Wilson is the only market in the world that requires that.
Practically every dealer in leaf tobacco in the world has buyers on the floors of the Wilson market. Immense plants for handling the tobacco have been erected by the Imperial Tobacco Company, Ltd., of England, Export Tobacco Com- pany of England, Wilson Tobacco Company, R. P. Watson & Company, R. J. Reynolds Company, J. E. Hughes Company, W. T. Clark & Company, American Tobacco Company, Lig- gett and Myers and Monk & Company.

Farming-From a geographical standpoint Wilson County is most admirably situated. Being in the extreme upper edge of the Coast Plain District, and just at the end of the Piedmont section, it has many of the advantages of both. That is to say, it is rolling enough to take care of the drainage very well, and does not have the cumbersom hills, which are a serious handi- cap to the farming industry. On the other hand, it is a desir- able distance from the Tidewater region, thus giving it a healthful medium, dry climate, with abundant rainfall for agri- cultural crops. Its soils are of the sand loam type with slight desirable variations.
Wilson County is situated in the center of the bright leaf tobacco belt, which gives it prominence throughout the world. It has also the distinction of being in the center of the highest cotton producing section per acre in the world. Wilson County soils are well adapted to the raising of corn, hay, potatoes, legumes of many varieties, peanuts, oats, rye and various and sundry kinds of fruits, vegetables and live stock. The farmers of Wilson County plant on an average of 29,500 acres of cot- ton, 33,000 acres of corn and 16,500 acres of tobacco yearly.
Wilson and Wilson County offers many opportunities to the manufacturer and home seeker, and specific information will be gladly furnished upon request by
THE WILSON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE,
Wilson, North Carolina.
