INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeast- ern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1962 edition of the Brevard City Directory, which also includes Forest Hills, Fortune Cove, North Bre- vard, Pisgah Forest and Rural Route Residents.
This is the first Hill Directory of Brevard and is com- pletely standardized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
Confidence in the growth of Brevard's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Di- rectory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Brevard to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and resi- dents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Brevard Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic in- formation pertaining to the community.
Five Major Departments
The five major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major de- partment, printed on goldenrod paper, and contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and pro- fessional interests of Brevard. The advertisements are in- dexed under headings descriptive of the business repre- sented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Bre- vard, the necessity of having this kind of information im- mediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
II. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the second major department, printed on canary paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such, it plays an important part in the daily activ- ities of the commercial, industrial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Busi- ness Directory than through any other medium.

INTRODUCTION
III. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the third major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Brevard, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.
IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is the fourth major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in nu- merical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special fea- tures of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fifth major department, printed on blue paper.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Brevard and vicin- ity. There are more than 1,000 of these Directory Libraries, installed and maintained in cities and towns throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated and of which Hill Directory Company is a member.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
BREVARD, NORTH CAROLINA Population 1960 Census 4,857
General History
Brevard was created especially to be the seat of govern- ment of Transylvania county. The county was organized in 1861 and one of the first actions of the county court in that year was a decision to locate a site for the town where the court house was to be erected. A survey was ordered, lots were laid out, and the center of the town was placed at the crossing of the two principal streets. At one corner of the crossing the court house site was staked off. The two streets, each wider than ordinary for that time, were named Broad Street and Main Street. They were then and have since continued to be the center of the town's business com- munity. The town was not immediately incorporated for the reason that it had only seven residents. It was 1867 before the incorporation was accomplished.
Aerial View of Brevard
In the early years, Brevard was important chiefly be- cause of the county court house. The largest church in the vicinity was three miles away, in the settlement called Davidson's River, and there were busy country stores and grist mills elsewhere in the county equally important to Bre- vard's biggest and best. One of the principal places of com- merce in the county in that time was known as the Valley store. It was two miles north of Brevard. Its proprietor was Braxton C. Lankford, and it was in that store that the county court ordered Brevard into existence. The court house did not make Brevard a great magnet. In all but one direction the mountains and foothills were a barrier to travel. The only open way was in the direction of Hender- sonville, and from that town, in 1895, the first regular outlet for heavy freight was laid down. That was the railroad,
13
INTRODUCTION
largely a local undertaking, which was later extended as far as Lake Toxaway. The railroad was a stimulant to lum- bering and logging, which became the first industry in this region. In time industry was to far outstrip both lumber- ing and farming in the county as sources of employment for the wage earners of Brevard and the county at large.
The first manufacturing plant on the modern scale was established near Brevard in 1939. It was the Ecusta Paper Corporation, later to become part of the multi-million dollar Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation. Today Olin em- ploys some 3,000 persons whose annual pay exceeds 12 mil- lion dollars. Next in industrial importance to Brevard and its environs is the DuPont plant in Buck Forest, which em- ploys over 200 people and is (1962) expanding its plant and work force. Prior to the founding of Ecusta and DuPont the principal places of employment in the town and the county were the various small sawmills and later the lumber, tanning and extract plants located in Rosman, Brevard and Pisgah Forest. Important parts of those operations were the Silversteen Industries, the first of which was launched in 1901, and the Carr Lumber Company, whose mills in Pis- gah Forest were opened in 1913. In the Silversteen and Carr mills began the off-farm occupations which have, since the 1930s transformed Brevard from a lack-lustre mountain town, having a population of less than 2,000 to its present condition of a thriving trading and cultural center of a prosperous town and country community. More than half of the employees of Olin and DuPont live in rural home or on small farms in the French Broad Valley. Brevard's stores, shops, service and professional establishments are in large measure engaged in providing consumer services for the rural dwellers who combine factory work with part-time farming. Inside Brevard's town limits (population 1960 4,857) and in the adjacent rural environs are the homes of some 10,000 people. The estimated town population of Brevard in 1962 was in excess of 5,000.
Brevard is governed by a mayor and board of 5 aldermen. In 1959, by vote of the citizens, a city manager plan was adopted. The town has a highly-rated volunteer fire depart- ment, a trained and well-disciplined police department, and a public service engaged in garbage collecting, sewage dis- posal, street and light maintenance, and water supply for residential and commercial use. The total public debt is (1962) $575,000 and the tax rate is $1.45 per $100 based on a 30 per cent valuation.
Notable cultural influence in the Brevard community are 14 churches, an outstanding Junior college, an energetic amateur theatre, a summer institution called the Brevard Music Center conducting a 6-weeks camping season for girls and boys interested in music and a season of professional musical performances, a public library that is widely used by the general populace. In church architecture Brevard has an impressive display in the buildings of the Baptist, Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian congregations. The Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian have very expansive new structures embracing space for Sunday School classes, pastoral studies and choirs. The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd has an ultra mod- ern, strictly functional building and the Catholic and Epis- copal structures are in the traditional style.

INTRODUCTION
Brevard College is a junior institution supported by the Methodist denomination. It is one of the top schools of its classification and performs an unmatched service in the Brevard community and in a broader region as well. It has an enrollment of over 400 with an excellent faculty. Its physical plant and campus are valued at 21/2 million dollars, easily the most graceful note in the entire Brevard land- scape. The Brevard public schools are part of the county's two school districts. The high school was completed in 1959 and represents an outlay approximating 1 million dol- lars. It is in a spacious campus-style location. The town has a junior high school and elementary school.
The community has many clubs and organizations in the social, literary and cultural fields. There are six garden clubs and three music appreciation clubs, a book study club, a branch of the League of Women Voters, a chapter of the Business and Professional Women and a Lions, a Rotary, and a Kiwanis club. Also among Brevard's notable institu- tions are its hospital, its newspaper and its radio station- WPNF. The hospital has 43 beds and a well-equipped lab- oratory and surgery. It is managed by a professional ad- ministrator. The Transylvania Times is a weekly publica- tion, founded by the late Ed M. Anderson, and his brother John I. Anderson, the present editor, the Times has been elevated to national recognition. The newspaper is notable for its broad community coverage of local events, its editori- al courage, its independence of action, and its able photog- raphy. It has been awarded citations of excellence in judg- ing which was on national and state levels.
In the catalog of attractions Brevard residents and visitors rate the town's location as a foremost advantage. The altitude of 2230 feet provides a tempering of the sum- iner sun. That and the scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge make Brevard and its surroundings a popular location for summer homes and a haven for the tourist. The town is near the famous fishing streams of Pisgah National Forest and the picnic and camping ground of high mountain slopes. Within a short drive home folk and visitors can reach the recreation areas in the National Forest including Davidson River, White Pine and the Pink Beds. Highways 276 and 64 pass through Brevard and the Blue Ridge Park- way now nearing completion is accessible from Brevard at Wagon Road Gap, near Mt. Pisgah.
The town and its vicinity have late-type motels, family type hotels, several boarding houses and in the area are 17 summer camps for boys, girls and adults. The town has a branch of The First Union National Bank of North Caro- lina and a Federal Savings and Loan Association. In the town are retail stores, laundries, cleaning places, gasoline and automotive service stations, automobile dealers, a feed mill, farm supply stores, plumbing, heating and electrical contractors.
