INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1957 edition of the Chapel Hill City Directory which also includes Carrboro. This is the first Hill Directory of Chapel Hill and is completely standardized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North Ameri- can Directory Publishers.

Confidence in the growth of Chapel Hill's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Chapel Hill to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled or- ganization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Chapel Hill Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appro- priate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference adver- tising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Chapel Hill, the ne- cessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the com- mercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Chapel Hill and vicinity, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the named

streets are arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their re- spective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Chapel Hill and vicinity.

The Chapel Hill Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Chapel Hill City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Chapel Hill Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recog- nition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Direc- tory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is in a very real sense the mother of hundreds of state colleges and universities. These institutions had their humble be- ginning in the dark days of the American Revolution when the University at Chapel Hill was provided for in the State Constitution at Halifax in 1776.

Chartered in 1789, six years later it became the first state university in America to open its door to students. At that time, its physical plant consisted of a single building, Old East Dormitory, which is still in use today and is the oldest structure on any state university campus in the country.

From its beginning the University enjoyed a steady, healthy growth. In 1860, it stood at the forefront of American universities and had the second largest student body in America. In 1931, the State Legislature directed that the State College at Raleigh, the Woman's College at Greensboro, and the University at Chapel Hill be consoli- dated, and under unification, all three institutions have continued to make steady progress. While combined enroll- ment is now approximately 13,000, enrollment at the Uni- versity at Chapel Hill is now approximately 5,500, and the faculty numbers more than 500. In addition to students in residence, the University has approximately 1,300 students enrolled in correspondence courses, and hundreds in off- campus extension classes and college centers.

14

16

INTRODUCTION

The University at Chapel Hill comprises 14 schools and colleges - the General College, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Schools of Education, Business Administration, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Public Health, Library Science, Nursing, Journalism, Social Work, and Graduate School. The Division of Health Affairs was established in 1949. Its physical plant embraces almost 1,700 acres and 77 permanent buildings, valued at approximately $42,000,000. It is the oldest state university in the nation, founded in 1793 near the geographical center of the state. With pride in cultivating the natural beauty of the region, the campus is among the most attractive in the world.

Several years ago the American Council on Education sponsored a survey of departments qualified to give Doctor of Philosophy degrees. It found more such departments at the University than any other south of Baltimore and east of the Mississippi. In two surveys made by the United States Navy incident to the location of one of its Pre-Flight training schools, the University was adjudged the most de- sirable in the south and east.

Standards

The University is a member of the Association of Ameri- can Universities, and several of the colleges, schools and departments have attained national distinction in their special academic spheres.

The General College

Most freshmen and sophomores in the University enroll in the General College. For two years they follow the basic and liberal subjects constituting the foundations of that general education which is regarded as essential to balanced development and intelligent citizenship.

A feature of the General College is the extent of guid- ance and personal counseling available to students. Each student is the special charge of a faculty adviser.

Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest single academic unit of the University, enrolling the majority of

the undergraduates. After two years of General College study, most students not following specialized or other pro- fessional courses are assigned to the College of Arts and Sciences, admission to which is governed in part by main- tenance of at least a "C" average of the previous two years.

Departments of instruction in the Arts and Sciences include Art, the Classics, Dramatic Art, English, General and Comparative Literature, Germanic Languages, History, Journalism, Music, Philosophy, Radio, Religion, Romance Languages, Economics, Education, Physical Education, Po- litical Sciences, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Geology and Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology.

The College prepares students for bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees, or provides preparation for advanced professional and graduate studies.

Business Administration

The School of Business Administration occupies a place in the University organization coordinate with the other professional schools and the College of Arts and Sciences. The School is a member of the American Association of Schools of Business.

Main programs are in accounting, economics, statistics, marketing, and personnel, with courses in insurance, adver- tising, business law, production, purchasing, traffic prob- lems, wholesaling, retailing sales management, taxation, finance, banking, scientific management, collective bargain- ing, labor problems and transportation. Besides the graduate and the undergraduate programs is The Executive Program, a project in advanced management for a selected number of leading business and industrial executives.

Law

The School of Law is one of the approved law schools of the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools. It is housed in Man- ning Hall, near the center of the campus.

INTRODUCTION

Undergraduates who have completed at least three years of acceptable work toward a baccalaureate degree at an approved college or university are eligible to enter the School of Law.

Health Complex

A six-in-one Division of Health Affairs is sometimes called a health university within a university. The six-fold health complex includes School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, School of Dentistry, School of Nursing and a teaching hospital, the North Caro- lina Memorial Hospital.

The Division serves as a teaching-research-therapy center for training of professional men and women on the student level, as interns and residents and as experienced professional specialists concerned with further post-gradu- ate development.

Medicine

The School of Medicine was established in 1879 and became a four-year school with a teaching hospital attached in 1952.
