INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeast- ern Directories (publishers of the Chapel Hill Directory since 1957), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1962 edition of the Chapel Hill City Directory which also includes Carrboro.
Confidence in the growth of Chapel Hill's industry, pop- ulation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Di- rectory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Chapel Hill to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by ren- dering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled or- ganization, and having had the courteous and hearty coop- eration of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Chapel Hill Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic in- formation pertaining to the community.
Five Major Departments
The five major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes. the first major department, printed on goldenrod paper, and contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and pro- fessional interests of Chapel Hill. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business repre- sented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Chapel Hill, the necessity of having this kind of information im- mediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
II. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the second major department, printed on canary paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such, it plays an important part in the daily ac- tivities of the commercial, industrial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Busi- ness Directory than through any other medium.
III. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the third major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Chapel Hill, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

INTRODUCTION
IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is the fourth major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numer- ical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the num- bers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fifth major department, printed on blue paper.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Chapel Hill and vi- cinity.
The Chapel Hill Out-Of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Chapel Hill City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Merchants Assn & Credit Bureau and Chamber of Commerce Inc, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Direc- tory Libraries installed in cities and towns throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Associa- tion of North American Directory Publishers.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
University of North Carolina
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is in a very real sense the mother of hundreds of state colleges and universities. These institutions had their humble beginning in the dark days of the American Revolution when the Uni- versity at Chapel Hill was provided for in the State Constitu- tion at Halifax in 1776.
Chartered in 1789, six years later it became the first state university in America to open its door to students. At that time, its physical plant consisted of a single building, Old East Dormitory, which is still in use today and is the oldest structure on any state university campus in the country.
From its beginning the University enjoyed a steady, healthy growth. In 1860, it stood at the forefront of Ameri- can universities and had the second largest student body in America. In 1931, the State Legislature directed that the State College at Raleigh, the Woman's College at Greensboro, and the University at Chapel Hill be consolidated, and under unification, all three institutions have continued to make steady progress. While combined enrollment is now approxi- mately 13,000, enrollment at the University at Chapel Hill is now approximately 5,500, and the faculty numbers more than 500. In addition to students in residence, the Univer-

sity has approximately 1,300 students enrolled in correspon- dence courses, and hundreds in off-campus extension class- es and college centers.
The University at Chapel Hill comprises 14 schools and colleges-the General College, the College of Arts and Sci- ences, the Schools of Education, Business Administration, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Public Health, Library Science, Nursing, Journalism, Social Work, and Graduate School. The Division of Health Affairs was established in 1949. Its physical plant embraces almost 1,700 acres and 77 permanent buildings, valued at approximately $42,000,000. It is the oldest state university in the nation, founded in 1793 near the geographical center of the state. With pride in cul- tivating the natural beauty of the region, the campus is among the most attractive in the world.
Several years ago the American Council on Education sponsored a survey of departments qualified to give Doctor of Philosophy degrees. It found more such departments at the University than any other south of Baltimore and east of the Mississippi. In two surveys made by the United States Navy incident to the location of one of its Pre-Flight train- ing schools, the University was adjudged the most desirable in the south and east.
Standards
The University is a member of the Association of Ameri- can Universities, and several of the colleges, schools and de- partments have attained national distinction in their special academic spheres.
The General College
Most freshmen and sophomores in the University enroll in the General College. For two years they follow the basic and liberal subjects constituting the foundations of that general education which is regarded as essential to balanced development and intelligent citizenship.
