Confidence in the growth of Concord's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Direc- tory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Concord to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organi- zation, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the results of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Concord Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Five Major Departments
The five major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the first major depart- ment, printed on white paper. This is the only record in ex- istence that aims to show the name, marital status, occu- pation and address of each adult resident of Concord and vicinity and on the Concord rural routes, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and cor- poration.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the second major department, printed on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Concord and vicinity. The advertisements are indexed un- der headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of sup- ply. In a progressive community like Concord, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the third major department, printed on yellow paper. This depart- ment lists the names of all business and professional con- cerns of the whole community in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the

community. The Directory is the common intermediary be- tween buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, is the fourth major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective cross- ing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the list- ing of telephone numbers.
THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fifth major department.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed cop- ies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Concord and vicinity.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

enjoyed for more than six months of the year-60.6 in spring; 61.9 in fall. The average winter temperature is 49.5. Naturally, there are a few extremes in weather. The eleva- tion is 705 feet above sea level.
History
Concord was founded in 1793 by Scotch-Irish and Ger- man-Dutch settlers, and named Concord when the two fac- tions settled a dispute over the location of the county seat. The first court house was built in 1796. In 1872 a new and larger court house was built, but three years later it was destroyed by fire. The present court house was built in 1875.
The first gold discovered in the U. S. was in Cabarrus County in 1799. The nugget weighed approximately 17 pounds. In 1903 a nugget was found which weighed 28 pounds, one of the largest ever found, and a replica of this nugget is in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C.
The name, Concord, has prophetic significance. The city has lived up to its name in mutual understanding and help- fulness among its citizens.
Concord's growth has been accomplished through work- ing together, sharing together, and planning together for a better city and a better citizenship. It is a city that honors its past, that fosters civic pride in building for a better future.
Government
Concord is administered by a board of aldermen and a mayor, who are elected by the people. Every man on this board is a business man, and the city is run on a business basis. Cabarrus County is governed by a board of county commissioners, who are elected by popular vote of the citi- zens. The City and County government is among the best to be found anywhere.
