INTRODUCTION AND

GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, (publishers of Edenton City Directory since 1959), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1962 edition of the Edenton City Directory, which also includes rural route residents.

Confidence in the growth of Edenton's industry, popula- tion and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and so- cial activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Edenton to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Edenton Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activ- ities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the adver- tisements and business cards of firms and individuals desir- ing to present a more complete list of their products or serv- ices than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the at- tention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Edenton, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, indus- trial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, oc- cupation and address of each adult resident of Edenton and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respec- tive crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Edenton and vicinity.

The Edenton Out-of-Town Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Edenton City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Edenton Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public.

This is one of more than 1,000 of these Directory Libraries, installed and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an ad- vertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a com- mensurate return.

EDENTON AND CHOWAN COUNTY

History

Situated in the northeast coastal area Edenton is noted for its historic charm and beauty, is one of the three oldest communities in North Carolina. Chowan County, smallest in the State, borders on picturesque Chowan River and western Albemarle Sound, with Edenton as its county seat and pro- gressive business center.

Rich in history its citizens played important parts in defy- ing the British Parliament, assisting the Revolutionary forces and launching the new State. During the War Between the States Edenton served as Union headquarters, after Roanoke Island fell.

Settlers came about 1660 and the village was called "ye towne on Queen Ann's Creek" until 1722, when it was incor- porated as Edenton in honor of Royal Governor Charles Eden.

xiii

INTRODUCTION

Because the Governor lived nearby, Edenton was the unoffi- cial capital of the Colony for about 40 years.

Among Edenton's immortals are Joseph Hewes, signer of the Declaration of Independence, Secretary of the Naval Com- mittee and patron of John Paul Jones; Hugh Williamson, sig- ner of the Federal Constitution, James Iredell, Associate Just- ice of the first United States Supreme Court; and Samuel Johnston, early governor and first United States Senator from North Carolina.

The ladies of Edenton made themselves heard by signing resolutions protesting British injustice to the Colonies at the famous Edenton Tea Party on Oct. 25, 1774.

At one time an important port, merchants exported pitch, tar, turpentine, lumber, tobacco, corn and salt meat and fish. While the area today remains primarily agricultural there is a steady increase in diversified industry. Jumbo peanuts make Edenton and Chowan the largest peanut market in the State. Cotton, corn, soybeans, tobacco, early and late truck, canta- lopes and watermelons excel in fertile soil and are shipped to all markets. Hogs, cattle and other livestock are a major source of income.

Because of its proximity to raw products and its assets for pleasant living Edenton attracts industry. Light manu- facturing, enjoying excellent relationships between labor and management, includes cotton mill, lumber and wood products, peanut and fish products, metal fabrication, machine shops, farm equipment.

Blessed with bounteous waters for industry and recrea- tion, good climate, excellent labor, historic and progressive Edenton and Chowan County are ideally situated for recrea- tion, business and industry ... a good place to live, work and enjoy life.

Historic Homes and Buildings

Edenton's town and country homes are nationally known for their colonial authenticity and fine state of preservation. Most serve as private dwellings but some are opened to the public during home tours. Of interest are-Chowan County Courthouse, built in 1767, considered the finest Georgian court house in the South; Cupola House, ca. 1725; The Barker House, home of Penelope Barker who presided over Edenton Tea Party in 1774; Iredell House, built 1759, home of James Iredell, Associate Justice of U. S. Supreme Court; Joseph Hewes House, home of signer of Declaration of Independence, Sec- retary of Naval Committee, patron of John Paul Jones; St. Paul's Episcopal Church, erected 1736; Sycamore Plantation, built 1660 by Thomas Norcom, oldest house in the State; Hayes Plantation, begun 1789, distinctive traditional plantation over- looking Edenton Bay; home of Samuel Johnston, early Gov-
