The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.
The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:
1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.
2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.
3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.
4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use
as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.
5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.
6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.
7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.
8. To co-operate with approved organization and individual- en- gaged in creative advertising work.
9. To avoid unfair competition.
10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote .hat .unction.
$100 Reward will be paid by, the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrost and conviction of any person or persons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or fake directories.

Your new, improved City Directory is the most complete and comprehensive catalog ever published of the inhabit- ants, business concerns and institutions of your city. It is much more than just an alphabetical list of names and addresses.
Your City Directory Contains:

An Alphabetical list of names and addresses of every resident, business concern and institution, plus wife's name and if a widow the deceased husband's initial, and the occupations of all. Principal officers or owners and a description of businesses are included as well.

A Householders' Directory including a Street and Avenue Guide. This section lists every street and where intersecting streets appear. It lists numeri- cally every location on each street, naming the householder or business at each number and whether the person is a homeowner or renter and if he has a telephone. Similar information is pro- vided on office and public buildings and their occupants.

A Classified Business Directory listing every busi- ness, classified as to type, and showing names and addresses. It also lists every profession, club, so- ciety and association, hospital and cemetery, labor organization, library, park and playground and school.

I. Serve the public with honest values.
Il. Tell the truth about what is offered.
III. Tell the truth in a forthright manner so its significance may be understood by the trusting as well as the analytical.
IV. Tell customers what they want to know - what they have a right to know and ought to know about what is offered so that they may buy wisely and obtain the maximum satisfaction from their purchases.

VI. Be sure that the normal use of merchandise or services offered will not be hazardous to public health or life.

X. Avoid all tricky devices and schemes such as deceitful trade- in allowances, fictitious list prices, false and exaggerated com- parative prices, bait advertising, misleading free offers, fake sales and similar practices which prey upon human ignorance and gullibility.
