INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY publishers of Southeast- ern Directories (publishers of Forest City, Rutherfordton and Spindale Directory since 1958) present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1962 edition of the Forest City, Ruther- fordton and Spindale City Directory, which also includes Alex- ander Mills, N. C., Ruth, N. C., and Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of Forest City, Rutherfordton and Spindale's industry, population and wealth, and in the ad- vancement of their civic and social activities, will be main- tained as sections, of this Directory are consulted, for the Di- rectory is a mirror truly reflecting these communities to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with approval of every user, and that the Forest City, Rutherfordton and Spindale Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authen- tic information pertaining to the communities.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major de- partment, printed on goldenrod paper, and contains the ad- vertisements of leading manufacturing, business and pro- fessional interests of Forest City, Rutherfordton and Spindale. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to famil- iarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive area like Forest City, Rutherfordton and Spindale, the neces- sity of having this kind of information immediately avail- able, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

II. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the second major department, printed on canary paper. This de- partment lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable cata- log of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such, it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

III. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the third major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Forest City, Rutherfordton and Spindale, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the com- munities.

IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE in the fourth major department, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respec- tive crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fifth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the communities, depicting in unbiased terms what they have to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this is- sue of the Directory in Drecitory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Forest City, Rutherford- ton, Spindale and vicinity.

The Forest City, Rutherfordton and Spindale Out-of-Town City Directory Libraries

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Forest City, Rutherfordton and Spindale City Directory, directory libraries are maintained in the offices of the Forest City Chamber of Commerce and the Rutherfordton Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. These are one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an ad- vertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a com- mensurate return.

FOREST CITY (Courtesy of Forest City Chamber of Commerce)

Has been proclaimed as one of America's most beautiful small towns.

General Review

Springing up around the main cross-roads, located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Forest City was first chartered as Burnt Chimney and ratified the 27th day of February, 1877. On March 7, 1887, the General Assembly amended the Charter and the name was changed to Forest City. Accentuating the natural beauty of Forest City is a rectangular spruce and magnolia covered park in the center of the main street area. Located on each side of the main park are two smaller park areas adding to the beauty of the town.

Location

Forest City is situated in the Southwestern Piedmont sec- tion of North Carolina, the largest town in Rutherford County. It is located within a triangle formed by Charlotte, North Carolina (60 miles east,), Asheville, North Carolina (45 miles northwest), and Greenville, South Carolina (60 miles south- west).
