HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1950-51 edition of the Goldsboro City Directory.
Confidence in the growth of Goldsboro's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Goldsboro to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estima- tion of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the ap- proval of every user, and that the Goldsboro Directory will fulfill its mis- sion as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.
.
Five Major Departments (Each department beginning with Page 1)
The five major departments are arranged in the following order :--
I. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the first major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Goldsboro, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.
II. THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the second major department, printed on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Goldsboro. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive com- munity like Goldsboro, the necessity of having this kind of information im- mediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evi- denced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
III. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the third major de- partment, printed on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buy- ers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, is the fourth major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed

INTRODUCTION
GENERAL REVIEW
Goldsboro is a community of progress which has been kept alive since its charter as a municipality was issued 103 years ago, in 1847.
Goldsboro has long been known for its culture, barbecue cooking, community spirit, citizens of liberal thought and social conscience, and progressive industry. The early community was settled as a village of 100 persons when Waynesborough, a settlement in a nook of the Neuse, was relocated to be on the railroad when the Wilmington & Weldon Rail- road traversed the present site of Greater Goldsboro. It was the cross- roads of rail transportation in eastern North Carolina when the railroad from the blue Atlantic to the Blue Ridge Mountains of western Carolina was constructed across the W. & W. Railroad, now the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
In municipal government, Goldsboro was one of the first communities in the Southeast to adopt the city manager plan. It continues the city man- ager-aldermanic form of government.
From Goldsboro went Charles B. Aycock in 1900 to assume the leader- ship of North Carolina as its Governor and launch the Old North State on a parade of progress in government, education and industry which has continued for half a century.
Goldsboro has been interested inits position in matters of education, and that fact is attested by the contribution made in behalf of the public schools in the 1880's and continuing to this day. There are 14 school buildings in the city, and two private educational institutions. Goldsboro High School, for instance, is one of three high schools in the U. S. with a completely-furnished radio broadcasting station. Its dramatics depart- ment has been titled "The Youth Theatre of the South."
In the heart of "Tobaccoland," Goldsboro both markets and processes millions of pounds of golden-leaf, flue-cured tobacco annually, and har- vests and sells several thousand bales of cotton, a cash crop for which the South has been famous for two centuries. But there is new emphasis upon year-around farming-diversified agriculture-which makes Golds- boro the center of live stock production in beef, pork and dairying, and the countryside now has a cover crop of green pasture lands on acres taken from the cash-crop farming. This farming appeals to Goldsboro citizens as becoming this area with long and favorable growing seasons.
Goldsboro industrial plants are making the name of this city known throughout America. The building of the new steam electric plant of the Carolina Power & Light Co. on the Neuse River near Goldsboro will pro- vide more impetus to Goldsboro's dominant position as eastern North Carolina's industrial and agricultural center. Goldsboro produces electric wires for electric bulbs and radio tubes, agricultural implements, brass- ware, brick, cotton yarn, lumber, plywood veneers, tobacco for cigarettes, live stock feeds, grits, corn meal, flour, fertilizers, insecticides, cotton- seed products, soybean products, peanut meal and oil, foundry equipment, steel storage tanks, dairy products, meat products, carbonated beverages, millwork, furniture, custom-built cabinets, venetian blinds, truck bodies, concrete products, including tile and brick; and liquefied petroleum prod- ucts.
In the retail field, Goldsboro is the shopping center for a wide ter- ritory with a population of 250,000. Locally-owned and nationally-known firms feature brand merchandise and quality goods sold in modern and newly-designed stores. Goldsboro's business district is free from park- ing meters, a delight to shoppers. The volume of retail sales continues to stand in the top ranks of cities with a high retail sales record in the Southeast. Several of the larger nationally-known firms maintain dis- trict headquarters in Goldsboro for convenience in serving their custom- ers through wholesale outlets.
Three banking institutions and two building .and loan associations have assets and resources totaling near $100, 000, 000. "Insurance Capital of Eastern North Carolina" has been given to Goldsboro as a title be- cause of the representation in this city of several of the state and national insurance firms through district headquarters or large general agencies.
XII
INTRODUCTION
More than 40 physicians now are on the roster of the Wayne Medical Society, with a high percentage of these men specializing in some branch of medicine or surgery and giving added recognition to Goldsboro as a medical center. A new $ 1,500,000 hospital plant is to be completed in the coming year. The State of North Carolina maintains the Hospital for Negro Insane-largest mental hospital of its kind in America-near Goldsboro. A public health center, the Eastern North Carolina Branch of the State Orthopedic Hospital, and several private clinics, help to make Goldsboro one of the best-equipped cities with medical facilities.
Wayne County Memorial Community Building has become a living memorial to World War I veterans and is headquarters for many civic and recreational agencies. The Grand Lodge of the Odd Fellows of North Carolina maintains an orphanage here and recently completed a new ad- ministration building and cottage in the city.
Cotton and tobacco prices toppled in the past decades, and yet Golds- boro citizens have taken their adversities in stride, and built even greater and stronger community enterprises as they turned misfortune into good fortune. A hybrid buggy with automobile tires pulled by horse or mule was the inspiration for a mammoth "Hoover Cart Parade" in Goldsboro, and brought it international fame. Thus Goldsboro people turned a de- pression disaster into a good advertising piece.
Through the years Goldsboro has been in the "Parade of Progress" as a community of sound growth, steady and forward in its movement; generous in providing for good education, balance in industry, and di- versification in agriculture, and at all times concerned with the health, recreation, and social and spiritual welfare of its citizens.
During World War II thousands of men trained at nearby Seymour Johnson Field carried around the world the story of Goldsboro's sound community life and its hospitality. During and since the days of the recent war period there has been rapid and sound business expansion in and around the city. There is new "unity" in the Goldsboro "community."
And in the words of a beloved citizen of Goldsboro, a distinguished editor, the late Col. Joseph E. Robinson, the community has this banner in sight of all the world: "Goldsboro Goes Forward."
OTHER DATA
LOCATION: Goldsboro is located in eastern North Carolina, three miles north of the Neuse River and 52 miles southeast of Raleigh, the State capital. Its central location partially explains the city's consistent growth as the chief merchandising and distributing point of a rich agri- cultural area of more than 250,000 people.
POPULATION: Census reports reflect the steady growth of the city. The 1950 U. S. Census preliminary showed a population of 21,399 in the city proper. The population in 1910 was 6,107, and by 1930 it had grown to 14,985, and by 1940, 17,274. Wayne County, of which Goldsboro is the county seat, in 1930 had a population of 53,013, and in 1940, 58,328. A conservative estimate for the county in 1950 is 68,000.
INDUSTRY: The city's people find employment in merchandising, dis- tributing and manufacturing. Goldsboro's more than 40 manufacturing plants produce lumber and lumber products, brick, agricultural imple- ments, cotton yarn, veneer, furniture, cottonseed products, meal, grits, stock feed, electric wire, textile products, meat products, frozen foods. Its three tobacco redrying plants handle millions of pounds of tobacco yearly, much of it shipped from other points in eastern North Carolina and from South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky.
