HOUSING: Housing is modern and living costs are reasonable. Local markets afford for most of the year an abundance of vegetables and fruits produced within a short radius of the city. Local markets also afford a bountiful supply of poultry, dairy products and meats for the entire year.

RECREATION: Ample recreational facilities are provided. A recrea- tional council provides a year-around program of sports and activities for the city, including basketball, physical education classes, swimming team, playgrounds directed by specialists, amateur baseball and soft-

ball. The city is a member of the Coastal Plains Baseball (Class D) League. A Civic Theatre group has provided stimulating entertainment for many years. The city's public library is one of the oldest in the state, and at the same time is one of the most modern in its facilities.

Goldsboro has three parks with a combined area of more than 300 acres. One of these, Herman Park, has the largest menagerie in eastern North Carolina. Included in the recreational assets is a new municipal stadium. A well-planned 18-hole golf course is a part of the park system.

Four modern movie houses complete the recreational picture. These theatres play first-run pictures and an occasional road show or vaude- ville.

CHURCHES: Goldsboro is not neglectful of religious activities. There are 19 denominations and branches of ecclesiastical bodies having 50 churches, for both white and Negro citizens. The denominations include: Baptist, Catholic, Christian, Disciples of Christ, Episcopal, Free Will Baptist, Friends, Holiness, Jewish, Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ, Lutheran, Methodist, Pentecostal Holiness, Presbyterian, Salvation Ar- my, Evangelical Baptist, and three minor groups.

EDUCATION: Goldsboro graded schools were the first chartered public schools in North Carolina and have a wide reputation for excellence of instruction. The Goldsboro High School is a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and its graduates are admitted to standard institutions of higher learning without examination. The city has twelve public schools (elementary and high) for its students- seven white and five Negro, valued at $2, 600,000, and a combined faculty of more than 125. In addition to the public schools, the Sisters of the Im-

maculate Heart of St. Mary maintain a parochial school which provides instruction from the kindergarten through the second year of high school, and a private secretarial school trains pupils for business careers. A modern school of practical nursing is an adjunct of the Wayne Memorial Hospital.

CLIMATE: Weather conditions are ideal. The city is practically with- out fogs or freezes. The annual precipitation computed from the Weather Bureau records averages 53.93 inches. The mean minimum annual tem- perature, likewise computed from the Weather Bureau records, is 41.4 degrees, and the 'mean maximum annual temperature is 80.2 degrees. The mean annual temperature is 62.2 degrees. The altitude is 102 feet.

RAIL SERVICE: Goldsboro is served by three railroad lines. They are the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, connecting points north and south; the Atlantic & East Carolina Railroad, Goldsboro being the western ter- minus of this line, connecting with coastal cities; and the Southern Rail- way, connecting with points west, southwest and northwest. These carriers operate fast trains to, through and from Goldsboro, and offer the shipping public very efficient transportation service, having good connections to the principal industrial centers in every area along the Atlantic Sea- board and in the Middle West. There are ten passenger trains in and out of Goldsboro daily.

HIGHWAYS: Nine standard highways radiate from Goldsboro, offering a convenient service to tourists and motor transportation. U. S. Highway 70 traverses the state in an east-west direction, from the Atlantic Sea- board on the east across the state and into Tennessee. U. S. Highway 117 connects the principal cities of the North and East to Southern and South- eastern points. State Highway 102 crosses the city from northeast to southwest. In the northeast direction it affords direct connections with the Norfolk, Va., area, and southwest to Goldsboro it provides a through channel to Charlotte and Atlanta. State Highway 111, southeast of Golds- boro, offers an almost open direct lane to the U. S. Marine bases at Jack- sonville, N. C. U. S. Highway 70 leads to Cherry Point, N. C., southeast of Goldsboro and to Beaches on the Atlantic Coast. North Carolina High- way 581 provides access to north-central areas in the state.

Among Goldsboro's assets are its churches. One of the oldest edifices of worship is shown in this photograph.

INTRODUCTION

COF DSBORO HIGH SCHOOL

Goldsboro High School, a modern school plant, is excellently equipped for its courses in literary and industrial training.

BUS LINES: The Union Bus Terminal serves three transportation companies, with 70 buses arriving and departing daily. Companies serv- ing Goldsboro include the Atlantic Greyhound Lines, Queen City Coach Co., and Seashore Transportation Co.

AIRPORTS: The City owns the new 420-acre modern Class 4 airport which is a part of Seymour Johnson Field, southeast of Goldsboro.

Interest in aviation has long been active in Goldsboro. For many years before the outbreak of World War II, a municipal airport was main- tained and from this field there was much civilian flying. In 1940, the City of Goldsboro purchased a site for a large modern airport, and was nearing completion of the construction of this field when the Army Air Forces leased it. Since that date more and more construction and ad- ditions have developed it into one of the most up-to-date flying fields along the Atlantic Seaboard.

The Civil Aeronautics Board has certificated Piedmont Aviation, Inc., to provide air service -- passenger, mail, express and freight-to and from Goldsboro. This line provides daily connections to all parts of the U. S.

COMMUNITY BUILDING: A building costing $100,000, erected through public subscription by patriotic citizens of Goldsboro and Wayne County, memorializes the young men of the city and county who served in the World War of 1917-1918. This first memorial erected in the U. S. follow- ing World War I is dedicated to the heroes of that conflict and recently has been renovated throughout to serve more adequately.

Wayne County, named for Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne, has a stately building housing the various departments and divisions of its government.

The following crops are grown in reasonable proportions: Wheat, peanuts, rye, .cowpeas, soybeans, cowpea hay, truck crops and commercial vegetables. Goldsboro has long ranked as a leading tobacco and cotton market. Its principal commodities in 1949 were valued in ex- cess of $ 21,500,000.

.

CIVIC CLUBS: The civic life of the community is represented by a number of strong, thriving and progressive organizations. INTRODUCTION

Goldsboro is a leader in retail sales, figures from Sales Management's "Survey of Buying Power" for the past several years placing Goldsboro's volume of retail sales in excess of $ 30,000,000 annually, and far ahead of any other eastern North Carolina city.

Its diversification of industry gives it a substantial lead over other cities of similar size and interest in North Carolina in the value of its manufactured goods and annual payrolls.

Inquiries about the development of new branch units for the manufac- ture of goods or the distribution of various commodities will receive the prompt attention of the Goldsboro Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Association, Inc.

Goldsboro welcomes its visitors and has a friendly atmosphere for those making this city their place of residence.
