INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, pre- sent to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1957 edition of the Kanna- polis City Directory, which also includes China Grove, Landis and the rural routes emanating from the Kannapolis Post Office.
Confidence in the growth of Kannapolis' industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sec- tions of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Kannapolis to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Kannapolis Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic informa- tion pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Direc- tory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under ap- propriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more com- plete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Kannapolis, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Kannapolis, China Grove, Landis and on the Kannapolis Rural Routes, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AV- ENUE GUIDE, on green paper, is the third major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business con- cerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department, showing a section for Kannapolis followed by a separate section for China Grove and Landis.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing pro- tection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.
The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.
The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:
1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.
2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.
3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to -treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.
4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use
as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.
5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.
6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.
7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.
8. To co-operate with approved organization and individuals en- gaged in creative advertising work.
9. To avoid unfair competition.
10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

INTRODUCTION
Kannapolis has 340 retail firms. Effective purchasing power of Cabarrus County compares favorably with state and national averages.
The people here are church-goers. They make up 80 congregations.
And they have a keen civic spirit, working through such organizations as the Masons, Odd Fellows, Woodmen of the World, Red Men, Patriotic Order Sons of America, Junior Order United American Mechanics, Business Men's Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Lions International, Pilot Club, Credit Women's Breakfast Club, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and their auxiliaries, War Dads, War Mothers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Inde- pendent Student Aid Association, Red Cross, Moose Lodge and dozens of fellow- ship clubs for all ages.
The heart of the community is the Cannon Memorial Y.M.C.A., which claims one of the largest memberships under one roof in the world-wide organization. At the end of the 1957 campaign, the rolls listed the names of 12,566 men, women, boys and girls.
It operates in a Colonial-style structure that cost $500,000 in the years before World War II, when money went much farther than it goes today. Facilities include two large gymnasiums, three kitchens, a library that ranks with the finest in North Carolina, a spacious swimming pool, a health club, handball and volleyball courts, bowling alleys, billiard and tennis tables and numerous club and conference rooms.
Kannapolis' public schools bow to none in North Carolina. Enrollment is a record 5,600 boys and girls.
A. L. Brown Senior High School is known widely for its diversified courses, offering: The prescribed academic studies, home economics, vocational courses, art, dramatics, music, debating, journalism, physical education and Bible.
