The public school music program begins in the first grade and extends through Cannon High's senior class. The organizations stand out in high school competition, and in July, 1949, the Cannon High band represented North Caro- lina at the Lions International convention in New York City. The band is scheduled to participate in the Lions Convention in Miami in 1956.
Kannapolis' key industry is the Cannon Mills Co., the world's largest manu- facturer of household textiles-towels, bath mats, wash clothes, dish towels, sheets and pillowcases, also nylon stockings.
The town has been developed around the Cannon Mills.
The village mushroomed.
Mr. Cannon, whose dream was a model textile city built around a booming industrial plant, contributed land and funds for construction of churches and schools.
He made, back in 1898, the first hand towel manufactured in the South, and by the time he died in 1921, Cannon towels had become nationally-famous.
After the founder's death, his son, Charles A. Cannon, became chief of the vast industry, and developed a textile trade far beyond his father's fondest hopes.
Looking south of West Ave., this scene depicts new Colonial-type buildings now being erected in the multi-million-dollar expansion program under way in Kannapolis.

INTRODUCTION
Trinity Methodist Church, built at a cost of approximately half-million dollars in 1954-1955. It is one of the many churches serving residents of Kannapolis.
A. L. Brown High School (aerial view). This is the Senior High School with ap- proximately 800 boys and girls enrolled which includes complete vocational training. (More than 5,600 students are enrolled in all the city schools).
The Cannon organization now employs approximately 15,500 men and women. Thousands of these workers have service records extending from 15 to more than 60 years. Those who have been with the company 25 years or longer are enter- tained at loyalty banquets each autumn.
Charles A. Cannon, like his father, had dreams of a model manufacturing town-a beautiful town to which North Carolinians could point with pride.
In 1937, the fiftieth anniversary of the company, he launched a gigantic, multi- million-dollar construction and remodeling program. This expansion, inter- rupted by World War II, is still in progress.
Mr. Cannon was impressed with the manner in which historic Williams- burg, Va., had been rebuilt, and he engaged the C. E. Swanson Associates, Chicago architects, to survey Kannapolis' business district and draw plans to be used in the long-range construction program.
A result has been a transformation of the downtown district into Colonial- type architecture.
INTRODUCTION
XIII
Little Mt. Vernon in the City Park is a memorial to the more than 4,000 local men and women who served in the Armed Forces during World War II.
Mary Ella Hall, named in honor of the wife of the "Towel City" founder, is one of the buildings housing employees of Cannon Mills.

Out of Sight -- Out of Mind Out of Business
The importance of keeping firm and product names in the public eye is recognized by all business men. It is astonishing to see how a firm or prod- uct, however meritorious, will slip into the limbo of the forgotten if not per- sistently advertised.
The City Directory is the natural medium for keeping a business or product name in the spotlight. Insist on being well represented in its pages.

Do Not Lend Your CITY DIRECTORY
IT COSTS YOU MONEY-Every Time it Is Loaned
The practice of lending your City Directory, in a great measure, is responsible for the increasing cost of Directory Service.
The reason is :- There is a definite cost involved in the making of the DIRECTORY of Your City.
THIS COST MUST BE ABSORBED BY THE SUBSCRIBERS BE THEY ONE-OR BE THEY 1000.
If there were but ONE SUBSCRIBER to the CITY DIRECTORY-THE ONE SUBSCRIBER would of necessity have to absorb THE WHOLE COST.
If there were 100 SUBSCRIBERS each one would have to absorb 1/100th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.
If there were 1000 SUBSCRIBERS-each one would have to absorb 1/1000th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.
From which it is obvious that the GREATER the number of subscribers -the LESSER the cost to each.
And
It is also obvious that the LESSER the number of subscribers-the GREATER the cost to each.
Every time you loan your City Directory the LESS NECESSITY THERE IS FOR THE BORROWER TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THE SERVICE.
MORE BORROWERS result in FEWER SUBSCRIBERS which means IN- CREASED COST.
