INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeastern Directories (publishers of the Kannapolis Directory since 1950), presents to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1964 edition of the Kannapolis City Direc- tory, which also includes China Grove, Landis and Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of Kannapolis' industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Kannapolis to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publish- ers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Kannapolis Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order: --

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major department of the Di- rectory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete presenta- tion of their products or services. Following this is the Classified Business section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the community, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the community. The Buyers' Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Kannapolis, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Kannapolis, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corpora- tion in the community.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the desig- nation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major de- partment, printed on blue paper showing a section for Kannapolis, followed by a separate section for China Grove and Landis.

Community Publicity

.

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a

business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Kannapolis and vicinity.

The Kannapolis Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Kannapolis City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Kannapolis Merchants Association Inc, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in cities and towns throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confi- dence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with the assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

X

INTRODUCTION

Kannapolis' public schools bow to none in North Carolina, Enrollment is a record 5,679 boys and girls.

A. L. Brown Senior High School is known widely for its diversified courses, offering: The prescribed academic studies, home economics, vocational courses, art, dramatics, music, debating, journalism, physical education and Bible.

The public school music program begins in the first grade and extends through senior class.

Kannapolis' key industry is the Cannon Mills Co., the world's largest manufacturer of household textiles -- towels, bath mats, wash cloths, dish towels, sheets and pillowcases, also nylon stockings.

The town has been developed around the Cannon Mills.

The village mushroomed.

Mr. Cannon, whose dream was a model textile city built around a booming industrial plant, contributed land and funds for construction of churches and schools.

He made, back in 1898, the first hand towel manufactured in the South, and by the time he died in 1921, Cannon towels had become nationally-famous.

After the founder's death, his son, Charles A. Cannon, became chief of the vast industry, and developed a textile trade far beyond his father's fondest hopes.

The Cannon organization now employs approximately 15,500 men and women. Thousands of these workers have service records extending from 10 to more than 60 years.

Charles A. Cannon, like his father, had dreams of a model manufacturing town -- a beautiful town to which North Carolinians could point with pride.

In 1937, the fiftieth anniversary of the company, he launched a gigantic, multi-million-dollar construction and remodeling program. This expansion, interrupted by World War II, is still in progress.

Mr. Cannon was impressed with the manner in which historic Williams- burg, Va., had been rebuilt, and he engaged the C. E. Swanson Associates, Chicago architects, to survey Kannapolis' business district and draw plans to be used in the long-range construction program.

XI

INTRODUCTION

A result has been a transformation of the downtown district into Colonial- type architecture.

One of the nation's largest sanitary districts is now in its formative stages. This will take in more than 5,000 homes.

LANDIS, NORTH CAROLINA

FACTS ABOUT LANDIS

The Town of Landis was incorporated March 7, 1901. It is situated in the beautiful Piedmont crescent of North Carolina at an elevation of 900 feet. The population according to the 1960 census is 1,763.

It operates under a mayor-alderman form of government. The mayor and 4 aldermen are elected for a two-year term and receive no salary. They meet the first Monday in each month to decide upon matters pertaining to the town with special meetings called when the need arises. They have one full-time policeman and one part-time policeman. They also have three policewomen to direct the traffic during school hours.

The town operates its own water works and power systems. Both systems are operated efficiently and profitably thus reducing the amount of' taxes needed. Duke Power Co. furnishes the power for resale.

The water supply system consists of a water plant with a designed capacity of one million gallons of finished water per day. 290,000 gallons of finished water can be stored at the plant. The Town has one -- one million gallon finished water storage tank, and two -- one hundred thousand gallon finished water storage tanks. The Town draws raw water from three reservoirs. George Wright Lake, located at Five Forks, has a capacity of 45 million gallons of water. Lake Corriher and the lower lake, located at the water plant, has a combined capacity of 72 million gallons of water. The waste treatment plant uses the Imhoff System of treatment of waste.
