A Library is provided by the town with special emphasis on the children's reading program during the summer months. They also provide a musical program for the band students during the summer months. A full recreation program is provided, see write-ups on following pages.
The Town sponsors a Christmas parade each year. Also, the First Evan- gelical and Reformed Church in Landis presents a live nativity scene on the lawn of their church. Thousands of people view the nativity scene as it is pre - sented each evening from 7 'til 9 P. M., for approximately 10 days at Christ- mas time.
The Civic organizations of the Town are among the most active in the State. The Landis Community Development Association, Inc. and Landis En- terprise Inc. are the two organizations which are promoting Landis and help- ing new industries to locate in Landis.
We extend a cordial welcome to everyone who wishes to come and visit our town.
RECREATION
The people of Landis have the philosophy that all work and no play makes a dull child. In keeping with this philosophy the residents provide many
XIII
INTRODUCTION
recreational activities for their youngsters. The most popular is the swim- ming pool and is available to all customers of the Landis light and water sys- tem for the small fee of $1.00 per year and is manned by life guards who are trained in life-saving procedures. The pavilion is available to the people and around it are five outdoor barbecue pits with grills. There are two all-weather tennis courts and playground equipment at two different locations in town for the children to enjoy. Other recreational facilities include an archery club with the best archery ranges in the state, soft ball and baseball for both chil- dren and adults and a winter basketball program. There are 2 large huts for the Boy Scouts and the Girl scouts. The beautiful American Legion building is the hub for the community life of Landis and is available for all activities.
INDUSTRY
The industrial backbone of Landis for over 60 years has been the Linn and Corriher Mill Companies. These two cotton yarn mills have a combined em- ployment of over 750 and a combined yearly payroll of nearly $2,500,000.00. Each plant has about 40,000 cotton spindles and produces about 150,000 pounds of yarn per week.
Sipe Manufacturing Co. is a local furniture plant employing approximately 25 persons. After 15 years of manufacturing upholstered living room and den furniture, Sipe Manufacturing now reaches sales points in six states.
LATEST ADDITIONS TO OUR INDUSTRIAL SCENE
Corlin Co., a joint venture of Linn Mills and Corriher Mills Co. Built at a cost of $750,000 is a package dyeing concern. Their payroll of $200,000 annual- ly helps the business. It is equipped to dye or bleach 90,000 pounds of yarn per week. It is a beautiful building and adds to the town.
On June 4, 1962, Loralyn Manufacturing Company, a division of Stayon Products, Incorporated, of Greenville, South Carolina, opened their new plant. Landis was chosen for the new plant site because of the plentiful supply of labor existing in the area and proximity of the plant to the suppliers of raw goods. Originally, total cost of the new plant was $80, 000.00 for the building and ground and $80,000.00 for equipment. The building (constructed by the D. C. Linn Construction Company) contains 15,300 square feet; it is completely air conditioned, modern building throughout. At the time of the opening, the new plant employed approximately fifty people. Loralyn manufactures Infants' Sleepwear and Play Clothes.
Wax Associates, Inc. is a locally owned operation which supplies paraffin discs to knitting yarn spinners throughout the South. It was organized in Lan- dis in the early 1950's and after a brief tenure of operation in another location, it has returned to Landis for full time operation in its new building.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing protection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.
The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory service.
The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges him- self :
1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.
2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.
3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.
4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Directories to supply them; to revise and stand- ardize methods and classifications, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Directory be made to serve its fullest use as a
business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.
5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.
6. To solicit subscriptions and advertising solely upon the merits of the publications.
7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding cir- culation, placing the test of reference publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the number of copies sold.
8. To co-operate with approved organizations and individuals en- gaged in creative advertising work.
9. To avoid unfair competition.
10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.
