INTRODUCTION AND

GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of South- eastern Directories, present to subscribers and the gen- eral public, this, the 1958 edition of the Morehead City- Beaufort City Directory, which also includes Atlantic Beach and the rural routes emanating from the More- head City and Beaufort Post Offices.

This is the first Hill Directory of Morehead City- Beaufort, and is completely standarized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North Amer- ican Directory Publishers.

Confidence in the growth of Morehead City-Beau- fort's industry, population and wealth, and in the ad- vancement of its civic and social activities, will be main- tained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Morehead City- Beaufort to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directo- ries in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an un- rivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the results of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Morehead City-Beaufort Directory will fulfill its mis- sion as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the fol- lowing order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Directory. This ambraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and pro- fessional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertise- ments and business cards of firms and individuals desir- ing to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yel- low Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and di- versified community like Morehead City-Beaufort, the

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Di- rectory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of resi- dents and business and professional concerns is the sec- ond major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult res- ident of Morehead City-Beaufort, and on the Morehead City-Beaufort rural routes, and the name, official per- sonnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, IN- CLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on green paper, is the third major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, fol- lowed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are ar- ranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersect- ing streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the desi- nation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of tele- phone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambi- tions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business lo- cation, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Driectory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable ad- vertisements of Smithfield and vicinity.

The Morehead City-Beaufort Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the More- head-Beaufort City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Morehead City Chamber ber of Commerce, for free reference by the general pub- lic. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries in- stalled in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the rec- ognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

General Review

Morehead City is named for John Motley Morehead, Governor of North Carolina, 1841-1845, who firmly be- lieved that this location had the potentialities of be- coming one of the great Atlantic seaports. Gov. More- head purchased 600 acres of land at the terminal of the railroad he had been instrumental in establishing in 1855. The town laid off in home sites had its streets named for directors of the original Shepard's Point Land Company. The peninsula was formerly known as Shep- pard's Point. The town was chartered in 1858.

Morehead City's ocean port has the most complete facilities in the state and lies only 45 minutes from the sea lanes. The terminal is state owned and is one of the few state operated ports showing an individual profit. Morehead is bounded by the Newport River, Calico Creek and Bogue Sound and is 1 mile from the ocean and At- lantic Beach.

The city is stretched out on a three-mile-long penin- sula which juts out into the Newport River and the Ocean Port Terminal.

On the water front is the finest Charter Fishing Fleet on the Atlantic Coast and world-famous sea-food restaurants. The Inland Water-way separates Morehead City and Atlantic Beach.

The Morehead City Country Club offers 18 of the finest holes for the occasional or serious golfer.

XV

INTRODUCTION

Hotels, motels, tourist courts, trailer parks and a shopping center which is open six days a week offer di- versification for the vacationist.

Although just one hundred years old, Morehead City has developed into one of the most active and progressive towns in the State. Known through the early years as a popular summer resort with it's wide expanse of ocean- side beach and resort attractions, it has taken on of late years a progress of commercial development.

To a large extent this recent growth has as come about as an outgrowth of a Port Terminal, conceived in the mind of the late John M. Morehead over one hundred years ago, offering advantages of ocean and inland water transportation, so essential to commercial life.

The close proximity to the sea-lane of ocean com- merce and travel, only five miles from sea-lane to port, through a channel of sufficient depth, allow the largest ocean-going craft to enter the harbor. With combined rail, Highway and water shipping facilities, the location of Morehead City is ideal for industries served by such utilities.

Morehead City has grown from a small plot of land, purchased and opened up by Mr. Morehead as a town in the fall of 1857. Annexation of adjoining sections through the years has more than doubled the original site.

Home building has kept pace with the town's ex- pansion, from the small attractive home of the average family to those of larger income. Added to the cost of the business and manufacturing structures, the average cost overall, over a period of eight years covers more than half a million dollars yearly. Development corporations, both within the city as well as nearby sections, announce an extensive program of building new homes to meet the steady demand of home-owners of all financial status.

It's midway location between the extreme north and the extreme south, gives the city and surrounding section a most equitable climate the year around. Ocean winds temper the heat of summer, the waters of the Gulf Stream a few miles off shore help to make the winters mild and of short duration.

No where along the Atlantic coast can the ocean beach, adjoining the city on the south, be excelled for the beauty of it's sand dunes and shore vegetation, it's safe bathing beach with no undertow.

History is written in the long stretch of Bogue Banks. Blackbeard the pirate is claimed to have visited Banks in his days of privateering. Some persons like to believe he hid much of his loot in the sands. Such is yet to be found, although many a searcher has spent hours digging for "pirate gold."

Upon the shores of the Banks has drifted the wreck- age of boats and men of three wars, within a hundred years. The sound and outer ocean has given a lifelihood

INTRODUCTION

to many through the years, either fishermen or whalers, from the early days of the county's settlement to present day. No better fishing grounds for pleasure or profit can be found along the Atlantic coast than off the shores of Carteret County.

Those seeking historical lore will be rewarded by a study of county history. Quakers played an important part in the early days of the county's settlement. From the outer world came settlers of various nationalties. Many came by ship through Old Topsail Inlet to land at Beaufort. Others treked their way along rough Indian trails from the colonies to the north. This mingling of personalities produced an heterogeneous group, out of which came the men and women who helped to establish the early settlements of the county.

Along with the varied commercial and economic life of the community the Christian and educational op- portunities have not been overlooked. Such meet the de- mands of all faiths, while the educational advantages and social and civic organizations, furnish an opportunity for study and community betterment.

The spirit of that early pioneer, John M. Morehead, still carries on, and his dream of a busy port and a great industrial city is being realized.

Golf Course

The Morehead City Country Club, just a few miles from the City limits, offers outdoor recreation for the Golf enthusiast every month of the year. The beautiful 18-hole course overlooks the tidal Newport River, its greens and rolling fairways wind around tall stands of stately pines which offer shade and also protection from occassional gusty breezes. A new Club House and swim- ming pool will soon be under construction. New homes are springing up rapidly in the Country Club vicinity but there are still a few ideal homesites available either on the waterfront or the highway.

This is truly a golfers' paradise, no snow or ice, few hot days and no long rainy season. Bring your golf clubs along and try it out.

Fort Macon

Located at the eastern end of Bogue banks, over- looking the Beaufort (Topsail) Inlet, Fort Macon and the forts which preceeded it, have guarded the Ports of More- head City and Beaufort two centuries. The present Fort was built in 1826 and completed in 1834. It is an out- standing example of military architecture and a monu- ment to the craftsmanship of the brick-masons of the 19th century.

Stone jetties, designed by Robert E. Lee then a young Lieutenant, can be plainly seen jutting out into the ocean and sound where they have held back erosion since about 1842. Little did Lee dream that thousands of

xvil

INTRODUCTION

tourist from all over the U. S. would fish from these solid barriers every year.

Taken over by the Confederate State at the beginn- ing of the Civil War, Fort Macon was recaptured by Fed- eral troops under Gen. J. G. Parke in 1862. The battle- scars still show on the masonry, in spite of attempts to hide them with patchwork.

About a mile west is the Fort Macon State Park Beach, a smooth white stretch of gleaming sand, sur- rounded by majestic dunes. The State provides a large parking area for cars, public bath houses, lifeguard ser- vice, also picnic tables and a large shelter for use in case af rain.

Atlantic Beach

Atlantic Beach, an incorporated town, is just across the bridge from Morehead City. This is the most develop- ed spot on the twenty-two miles of matchless, east-west, beach on Bogue Banks. Even though this is one of the safest beaches on the coast ample and efficient life- guard service is provided. The Marina's, launching ramps, bowling, pool, minature golf, kiddie rides and just about every kind of amusements line the boardwalk and it appraoches. Hotel, motels, lodges, restaurants and snack bars are convenient to the beach and the causeway. Two ocean fishing piers near the east end of the beach make fishing most convenient. On the Cause- way there are two fishing piers which extend out over Bogue Sound for those who prefer fishing in the calmer waters. The beaches on the sound offer still water sports to the children, skiing to those who like the thrill and boa&ng or sailing to all who like the water.

Pine Bluff Knolls

A new beach development has begun just west of Atlantic Beach, where about nine miles of the Hoffman Property (Theo. Roosevelt Estate) is to be offered as an exclusive resort area.

Beaufort

Across Newport River from Morehead City on Route 70 is Beaufort, the county seat of Carteret. Incorporated in 1723, Beaufort lived through Indian wars, the Spanish invasion of 1747 and other struggles that faced the young colonies.

Now Beaufort is a center for salt water industries, including shrimping and fishing. The menhaden fishing and processing business is one of the largest along the coast. The town's business section serves the fishing communities that dot the sound country east of Beau- fort. Visitors from far inland come to Beaufort to see its many splendid examples of early American architecture.
