INTRODUCTION
was a hero of the War of 1812, as captain of the Snap Dragon running the British blockade up and down the Atlantic coast. Naval and Army men of many nations lie buried under the ancient oaks in the cemetery. These include the British army officer of the late 1700's who was buried in a standing position, because he wanted to stand forever at attention.

Delightfully Different Beaufort
The county seat of Carteret County is Beaufort, named for the Earl of Beaufort at its incorporation in 1723. Founded in part by French Hugenots and sturdy English sailors, Beaufort looks to the sea for its enter- tainment and its livelihood. Surrounded on three sides by water, this third oldest town in North Carolina (there'll be a big celebration in 1960, marking 250 years of growth) faces a limitless horizon. Walk along Beau- fort's Front street (the gulls will be wheeling majestical- ly overhead) and you will have a view across Beaufort in- let of Fort Macon, built in 1832. Look beyond Beaufort Inlet, and there is the Atlantic ocean. Stroll further down Front street and you will see homes of unexcelled beauty dating back to the late 1700's still lived in and cherished by their owners.
Beaufort is the hub of Carteret County activity. The productive tobacco farmers from the western part of the county also use Beaufort as their trading center.
In the center of Beaufort, facing Ann street, is the Historical Cemetery, resting place of North Carolinians or renown. Here lies Otway Burns, under a cannon from his privateer, "Snapdragon," which harassed the British

in the war of 1812. Here, too, is the grave of an unknown English seaman, who asked to be buried standing straight up-and he is! Tombstones in the Cemetery mark the passage of time since 1775. Stroll through this quiet, landscaped place and feel that you're surrounded by history.
Beaufort is the gate-way to a world which is time- less-The undiscovered "Down East!"
With all this we guarantee you'll come to Beaufort year after year, and find it unchanging in friendliness and beauty.

A STATEMENT
OF
ADVERTISING PRINCIPLES
1. Good Advertising - aims to inform the consumer and help him to buy more intelligently.
2. Good Advertising - tells the truth, avoiding mis- statement of facts as well as possible deception through implication or omission. It makes no claims which can- not be met in full and without further qualification. It uses only testimonials of competent witnesses.
3. Good Advertising - conforms to the generally ac- cepted standards of good taste. It seeks public accept- ance on the basis of the merits of the product or service advertised rather than by the disparagement of com- peting goods. It tries to avoid practices that are offensive or annoying.
4. Good Advertising - recognizes both its economic responsibility to help reduce distribution costs and its social responsibility in serving the public interest.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing pro- tection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.
The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.
The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:
1. To consider, first. the interest of the user of the book.
2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.
3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.
4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them, to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use
as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.
5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.
6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.
7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekerr, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.
8. To co-operate with approved organization and individual- en- gaged in creative advertising work.
9. To avoid unfair competition.
10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote .hat .unction.
$100 Reward will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of any person or persons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or fake directories.

CASHIERS! TELLERS! CLERKS! * Do your employers furnish you with the latest edition of the City Directory?
You need it at your elbow at all times, to protect your company from forgers and bad-check artists. A few questions, checked against City Directory information, will trip them at once. Intelligent use of the City Directory for this purpose has saved thousands of dollars and helped make some cities "too sharp" for bad-check "operators."

Out of Sight . Out of Mind Out of Business
The importance of keeping firm and product names in the public eye is recognized by all business men. It is astonishing to see how a firm or product, however meritorious, will slip into the limbo of the forgotten if not persistently advertised.
*
The City Directory is the natural medium for keep- ing a business or product name in the spotlight. Insist on being well represented in its pages.
