INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1961 edition of the New Bern City Directory, which includes Bridgeton, and Rural Route Residents.
This is the first Hill Directory of New Bern, and is completely standarized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
Confidence in the growth of New Bern's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sec- tions of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting New Bern to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty coopera- tion of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and the New Bern Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information per- taining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Direc- tory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the cata- log itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like New Bern, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and pro- fessional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of New Bern and Bridgeton, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AV- ENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and busi- ness concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant- owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, de- picting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a busi- ness location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Di-

rectory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of New Bern and vicinity.
There are more than 700 of these Directory Libraries, installed and main- tained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of mem- bers of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated and of which Hill Directory Co., Inc, is a member.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progres- sive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

NEW BERN CENTER OF HISTORY-PIVOT OF PROGRESS
(Courtesy New Bern Chamber of Commerce)
This is the land where much of our history had its beginning, centered about New Bern, North Carolina's second oldest town, Colonial Center for business, culture, and political activity, the site of many of our "firsts". It is also a land of jet planes, trim modern boats, great modern highways and buildings-a land where the pulse of Eastern North Carolina's great new era of development is strongly evident.
New Bern looks two ways, a fact which accounts for the stability and sound character of progress which is evident here. Important strides have been made in the development of the area's mineral, timber and agricultural resources. Diversification in agriculture and industry have dominated this growth. Yet, while New Bern's aggressive citizens push on toward greater progress in business, agriculture and industry, they have kept a firm grip on the cherished traditions of their rich history, preserving the best of the past for themselves, their de- scendents, and for welcomed visitors who come here from throughout the world.
Aerial View of New Bern
Tryon Palace, called "the most beautiful building in the Colonial Ameri- cas," was built in pre-Revolutionary days by Royal Governor William Tryon as North Carolina's first fixed Colonial Capitol. Later it became the first Capitol of the State. Four State Governors of the State were inaugurated there. Restored authentically and furnished with mid-18th century antiques, at cost of more than $3,000,000, it is considered one of America's greatest showplaces. During the first 22 months it was opened to the public it attracted over 57,000 admiring visitors from all 50 states and 43 foreign countries.
New Bern is a sight-seer's paradise. Here are over 100 homes a century or more in age, many of which are open to visitors during the annual Garden Club Pilgrimage. The John Wright Stanley home, now a free library, with museum, is open daily. The Fireman's Museum (awarded the only prize by the National Historical Society for the preservation of antiquities in 1957), Attmore-Oliver House, William Gaston House, Masonic Temples and nearby Fort Macon add points of interest.
