INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of South- eastern Directories, present to subscribers and the gene- ral public, this, the 1959 edition of the Whiteville City Directory, which also includes the rural routes emana- ting from the Whiteville Post Office.

This is the first Hill Directory of Whiteville, and is completely standardized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

Confidence in the growth of Whiteville's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sec- tions of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Whiteville to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Direc- tories in the estimation of the public, has been estab- lished by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and the Whiteville Directory will fulfill its mis- sion as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first ma- jor department of the Directory. This embraces a com- plete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, ar- ranged in alphabetical order under appropriate head- ings-a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and busi- ness cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages rep- resent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Whiteville, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately avail- able, is obvious. The Directory is the common inter- mediary between buyer and seller, and plays an im- portant role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of resi- dents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims.to show the name, martial status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Whiteville and vicinity and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the comunity.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, IN-' CLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third' major department, printed on green paper. In this sec- tion the names of the streets are arranged in alphabeti- cal order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their res- pective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tennant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.

V. THE WHITEVILLE RURAL ROUTES DIREC- TORY is the fifth major department, printed on white paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and am- bitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms- what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a busi- ness location, as a manufacturing site and as an educa- tional center. To broadcast this information, the pub- lishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily avail- able for free reference, and serve as perpetual and reli- able advertisements of Whiteville and vicinity.

The Whiteville Out-of-Town-City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the. Whiteville City Directory, a Directory Library is main- tained in the offices of the Whiteville Merchants As- sociation, Inc., for free reference by the general public: This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries in- stalled in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada, by members of the Association of North American Direc- tory Publishers. ·

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the rec- . -

ognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

History of Whiteville, North Carolina

Whiteville, the county seat of Columbus County, is located somewhat west and north of the geographic center of the county. The courthouse is situated in the crossroads of north-south and east-west highways, forty- nine miles due west of the port city of Wilmington. It is the heart of a rich coastal farming section and is supported primarily by agriculture.

.

Originally called White's Crossing, the town was named for James B. White who gave the site for the courthouse, two of which have been built since the original one. Around the courthouse, streets and lots were laid out and this section is now referred to locally as Old Whiteville or Uptown Whiteville. When the rail- road came through in the 1840's, some considered that it would be a nuisance, since it would be noisy and dis- turb their stock, consequently, it ran a mile an an eighth to the south, and the depot this distance south of the courthouse was known as Vineland. The two names con- tinued until the name Vineland was dropped and it be- came a part of Whiteville. The old Vineland section of the town is now spoken of as "Downtown" in contrast to "Uptown" or Old Whiteville.

Whiteville was incorporated by the legislature in 1883. The oldest map of Whiteville on file in the court- house is dated 1897. It shows two or three squares in either direction from the courthouse and three streets leading to the depot where a few more lots are shown. Additional plats have been filed showing subdivisions of farms lying between the two centers and establishing the cross streets which are on the present map.

The road between the courthouse and the depot was a sand road until 1912, when a sand clay surface was laid. A sidewalk was built about 1890. The town issued bonds and established a water and sewer system in 1922 and 1923. There was a paving program in 1924, another in 1938 and another in 1941.

No finer chapter in Whiteville's history has been written than that concerning its participation in World War II. In services on both the home front and the military front, Whiteville, Citizens did their part.

Whiteville men fought in every theatre of opera- tions and served in every branch of the service. They ranged in rank from private to full colonel. In propor- tion to population, they won their share of awards for meritorious service.

On the home front, all phases of the American -Red Cross's volunteer program were carried out in a dis- tinguished manner and in the War Bond Drives, na- tional prominence was gained by local participation.

By legislative enactment, the schools of the White-

ville district comprise a school administrative unit sep- erate from the county system. A recent fire has destroy- ed the high school plant but plans are underway to build a more modern and well-equipped school for the high school students which will bear rich fruit in the educa- tion of Whiteville.youth.

In the field of religion, Whiteville is blessed with strong churches, magnificent buildings and good minis- ters. Methodists, Baptists and Presbyterians are the predominating denominations, although Pentecostal Holiness, Catholic, and Episcopal Churches have beauti- ful structures and are progressing with Whiteville. In addition, there are Free Will Baptists, Christian Mis- sionary Alliance, Church of God and Jehovah's Wit- nesses.

During the past ten years, Whiteville's recreational program has been formulated and now consists of a full- time director, spacious playgrounds and equipment and a well-rounded program for the youth and adults of the community. The Whiteville Country Club provides a ? nine-hole golf course, and there are numerous private tennis courts and swimming pools.

Columbus County Hospital is located in Whiteville - and has grown from a small institution in a home to its present capacity of 125 beds. It has ample equipment and competent, well-trained physicians for proper medi- cal care.

Whiteville has a well-appointed and well-equipped : city library with a wide circulation. The Whiteville Post Office, located in a beautiful building on Madison Street, . has a first class rating.

The National Guard Armory is amply built to pro- vide training space for this area's national guard.

The Whiteville Tobcco Market, of world-wide fame, has steadily progressed over the years and, now aver- aging over 32,000,000 pounds of tobacco sold each year during the three months selling season.

Whiteville is richly endowed with industrial pos- sibilities in the lumber and agricultural field. It has a civic-minded citizenship who are anxious to promote the civic development of the town. It has business men with vision and energy and it has natural beauty. It has civic organizations which have proved their worth as civic enterprises.

Located as it is in the heart of a great county where virgin opportunities still abound, the future of White- ville has possibilities yet unimagined. To the industrial- ists, particularly those whose industries are based in farm or forest products, who are looking for new terri- tory where labor and raw materials are available on a year-round basis at a reasonable cost, Whiteville offers a golden opportunity. To small business men, who are looking for a congenial atmosphere in which to live and work and educate their children, they will find in White- ville the fulfillment of their dreams.

WHY A YELLOW PAGE SECTION ?

*It is customary to include a Yellow Page Section in the City Directory because:

It gives business firms the opportunity to elaborate upon a description of their products and services impossible in the limited space of regular Alphabetical and Classified listings.

*

The Yellow Page Section is a necessary supplement to the regular listings; it is good City Directory in- formation . . . EXTENDED.

MORE GOODS ARE BOUGHT AND SOLD THROUGH THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS LISTS OF THE DIRECTORY THAN ANY OTHER MEDIUM ON EARTH
