INTRODUCTION

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1940 edition of the Winston-Salem City Directory.

Confidence in the continued growth of Winston-Salem's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Winston-Salem to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Winston-Salem Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.

Population

The population of Winston-Salem is estimated at 97,706, based on the number of personal names in the Alphabetical section of the Directory, with due allowance for those under Directory age. Territory immediately ad- jacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the Directory, and, likewise, in the population estimate.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-

THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 17 to 496, on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, oc- cupation and address of each adult resident of Winston-Salem, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 497 to 588. In this section the named streets are arranged in alphabetical order, followed by the numbered streets in numerical order; the numbers of the residences and busi- ness concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the num- bers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. A feature of this section is the designation of tenant- owned homes.

THE BUYERS' GUIDE, beginning opposite page 588 and separately paged from 1 to 36, on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of lead- ing manufacturing, business and professional interests of Winston-Salem. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business repre- sented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a large com- mercial and industrial center like Winston-Salem, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 625 to 675, on white paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary be- tween buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activi-

ties of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, follows the Classified Business Directory.

Municipal Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, de- picting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a busi- ness location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Winston-Salem.

The Winston-Salem Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Winston-Salem City Direc- tory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 500 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their con- fidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

Living in Winston-Salem

Dr. Howard E. Rondthaler, president of Salem College, says of this city: "There are in Winston-Salem those great influences of the inner life of man- hood and womanhood that decidely make for constructive citizenship, friendly living and a genuine comradeship of interest which are in the main accountable for the material progress of this city.

"From long experience, I assuredly believe that this is a community of friendly-minded and appreciative people. I truly believe, further, that there is here a sincerity of cooperation which moves beneath the surface and richly endows the daily life of this favored city.

"Living in Winston-Salem is not an experience of isolation and loneli- ness, because men and women find friends and form friendships here in a spiritual atmosphere, sincere in its welcome and lasting in its fellowship.

"Nor is this without historic reason. Not often is there to be found a community so bottomed upon a pioneer life which, while it sought freedom of conscience, expressed this freedom in industrial diligence, economic resource- fulness, and spiritual self-control.

"Around this foundation group there has been steadily gathered that larger present citizenship which, appreciative of the past, is interpreting these inherited ideals in terms of modern living."

Geography

Winston-Salem is located 1,000 feet above sea level, on the rolling Piedmont plateau in sight of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The climate is equable, with temperatures ranging from 35 to 40 degrees, normal for January, to 70 to 75 degrees, normal for July. Government records for 35 years show an average of 232 clear days-19 per month-with 54.4 inches of rainfall and 6.5 inches of snowfall.

The area is 15.5 square miles, and the population (City Directory estimate for 1939, 97,706. The increase of population during the past 50 years, according to the Federal Census, has been as follows: 1880, 4,194; 1890, 10,729; 1900, 13,650; 1910, 22,700; 1920, 48,395; 1930, 75,274.

History

The founders of Winston-Salem were members of the ancient Protestant church, Unitas Fratrum, now known as Moravian. They sent a surveying party to inspect every available tract of land in North Carolina before they bought the 100,000 acres on which the city is now located, and they spent 13 years familiarizing themselves with their property before they selected the site for their central settlement. In 1766, with detailed plans for the new community minutely prepared, the Moravians felled the first tree, built the first house, and called the rising town "Salem," meaning "peace."

The first settlers were chosen to provide the diversity of occupations and professions necessary to a complete community life. Within the first decade, Salem had a community house for church and other uses, schools for boys and girls, a water works system, fire regulations, a pottery, a com- munity store, thriving trade, and numerous industries. Upon these founda- tions the modern city has grown.

The site for Winston, court town for the then new County of Forsyth, was selected in 1849 and purchased from the Moravian Congregation. The two towns, later served for 28 years by the same chamber of commerce, were formally consolidated in 1913 as Winston-Salem.

Economics

Diversified manufacturing is the economic keystone of Winston-Salem. Here, almost wholly of local origin and administration, are located the largest tobacco manufacturing plants in the world, the largest circular-knit hosiery mill in the world, the largest men's and boys' underwear mill in the U. S., and 75 other industrial plants manufacturing air-conditioning machinery, swimming suits, boxes, caskets, cloth, cotton goods, dairy products, dye and finishing, furniture, mirrors, nicotine sulphate, iron and steel products, tape, tinfoil, yarns, and a variety of other commodities.

By value of manufactured products ($343,585,849 according to the U. S. Census of Manufactures for 1937), Winston-Salem is the leading in- dustrial city south of Baltimore. Approximately 50% of the population is gainfully employed, and the annual payroll is $25,000,000, including salaries and other compensations for services.

Also an important factor in the economic life of the city and surround- ing area is the Winston-Salem Leaf Tobacco Market, largest in the Old Belt, and one of the largest in the world, where from 50,000,000 to 60,000,000 pounds are auctioned annually.

Sociology

The population of Winston-Salem is 99.4% American-born. For the use of its residents, the city provides two hospitals (one for Negroes) ; 15 graded schools and 4 high schools, with an average of 10 acres of playground for each; a stadium; a 187-acre municipal park with 18-hole golf course, and all municipal services of a modern community.

Many municipal facilities have been made possible through the contribu- tions of civic-minded persons, and the Winston-Salem Community Chest, through which 14 charity and character-building agencies are maintained, is always raised promptly.
