INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1939 edition of the Winston-Salem City Directory. A new feature, the designation of tenant- owned homes, marks this edition.
Confidence in the continued growth of Winston-Salem's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Di- rectory is a mirror truly reflecting Winston-Salem to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory serv- ice. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Winston-Salem Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.
Population
The population of Winston-Salem is estimated at 96,184, based on the number of personal names in the Alphabetical section of the Directory, with due allowance for those under Directory age. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the Directory, and, likewise, in the population estimate.
Five Major Departments
The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 19 to 506, on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Winston-Salem, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 507 to 666. In this section the named streets are arranged in alphabetical order, followed by the numbered streets in numerical order; the numbers of the residences and business con- cerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the num- bers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective cross- ing points on each street. A new feature of this section is the designation of tenant-owned homes.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, beginning opposite page 666 and separately paged from 1 to 36, on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Winston- Salem. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a large commercial and industrial center like Winston-Salem, the neces- sity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 703 to 753, on white paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common inter- mediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

INTRODUCTION
THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, extends from page 755 to page 796.
Municipal Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, de- picting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this is- sue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertise- ments of Winston-Salem.
The Winston-Salem Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Winston-Salem City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Winston- Salem Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 475 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
Location
Winston-Salem, the leading industrial city of the Southeast, is located on the Piedmont Plateau, in northwest North Carolina, in the section that the late Franklin K. Lane predicted would become "the greatest industrial area in the country because of its industrial advantages and economies."
Population
The present population of Winston-Salem (corporate area) is 96,184 (based on 1939 City Directory). The population of the metropolitan area is in excess of 200,000.
The 1930 Federal Census showed the population as 75,274, an increase of 55.6% over the 1920 figure of 48,395. In the U. S,. for the same period, the increase in population was 16.1%. In North Carolina for the same period, it was 23.9%.
The population of Winston-Salem is 99.4% American-born.
From the earliest days, Winston-Salem has been known as a city of industrious people. Approximately 48% of the entire population is engaged in gainful occupation. The employed population can be classified as fol- lows: Manufacturing, 50%; domestic and personal service, 15%; wholesale and retail trade, 10%; professional and semi-professional, 6%; building and construction, 5%; transportation, communication and public service, 5%; real estate and insurance, 2%; all others, 7% (1930 Federal Census).
Industry
Winston-Salem is the leading manufacturing city of the Southeast, turning out products valued at more than $300,000,000 annually. According to the biennial census of industry for 1935 (U. S. Census of Manufactures), Winston-Salem had 80 manufacturing industries, with annual value of manufactured products of $278,578,166. The annual industrial survey of Jan. 1, 1938, made by the Chamber of Commerce, showed that 23 leading industries were employing 21,866 wage-earners, and that the cost of new buildings and equipment amounted to $3,574,451.76. The value of manufac- tured products had increased proportionately.
Tobacco has long been the leading product manufactured in Winston- Salem, although there is likewise a wide variety of other industries. At present, the city is producing about 40% of the nation's manufactured to- bacco, and makes more cigarettes than any city in the world.
Closely associated with tobacco manufacturing is the large leaf to- bacco market. For many years Winston-Salem had the largest market in the world, and did much to pioneer in selling methods. The market con- tinues to be the largest in the Old Belt, handling annually approximately 60,000,000 pounds and releasing to farmers by direct exchange approximately $10,000,000.
Winston-Salem is the home of the largest concerns in the U. S. for the manufacture of men's and boys' underwear, woolen blankets, and cir- cular-knit ladies' hosiery. Among other products manufactured on a large scale are: Furniture, air-conditioning machinery, nicotine sulphate, tinfoil, swimming suits and narrow fabric.
The annual industrial payroll, including salaries, wages and compensa- tions for services exceeds $25,000,000.
Winston-Salem industry is responsible for the payment of approxi- mately $500,000 in internal revenue every working day, and for payment of a substantial percentage of City, County and State taxes.
Climate
Winston-Salem has a particularly equable climate. In a report con- cerning Forsyth County (of which Winston-Salem is county seat), the U. S. Department of Agriculture Soil Survey states: "Owing to the elevation, the rolling topography, and excellent surface drainage, this county possesses a healthful and invigorating climate. The summers are mild and pleasant, with cool nights, while the winters are not excessively cold."
Government reports covering a period of 40 years give Winston-Salem an average of 232 clear days per year, well-spaced throughout the year. The same reports show mean temperature, 58.2 degrees F .; high, 93; low, 11; normal, July, 70-75; normal, January, 35-40.
The growing season has a minimum of 180 days. The average annual rainfall of 48 inches is well-distributed through the year. Snowfall is 6.5 inches.

INTRODUCTION
Transportation
Three competing railroads serve Winston-Salem. These are the South- ern, Norfolk & Western, and Winston-Salem Southbound. Because of heavy in-and-out shipping, the city also has offices of 25 off-line railroads, rep- resenting two-thirds of the major lines of the country.
Three bus lines serve the city, and it is a major distribution center for the largest line serving the Eastern area.
The city has a large, first-class airport, now in process of completion at a cost of approximately $750,000.
Highways
Winston-Salem is the center of more paved highways of Federal and State systems than any city in North Carolina. Located on the Shenandoah Route, it is the natural gateway from North and South for the numerous well-known winter and summer resorts of the sand hills, coast and moun- tains.
Education
From Colonial times, Salem has been known as an educational center, and the combined city, Winston-Salem, has carried on the old tradition. Six years after the first settlers came to the community (1766), a school for girls was opened. Now known as Salem College and Salem Academy, with separate plants, the old school has never closed its doors except for regular vacation. It is now a standard Class A institution, with a four-year college course leading to three degrees.
Foundation for the city's public school system was laid by Dr. Calvin Wiley, "Father of the Public Schools" in North Carolina. There are at pres- ent 21 schools, with a total enrollment of 16,000 students. There are four high schools. The teaching staff is approximately 500, Separate schools are maintained for Forsyth County, with enrollment of 10,000.
Negro children are educated in separate schools, meeting standard re- quirements.
Winston-Salem Teachers College serves the higher education needs of the community and section for Negroes. It is a modern institution.
Agriculture and Dairying
Agriculture ranks next after industry in Forsyth County. Principal crops are: Corn, tobacco, wheat, oats, cotton, clover, alfalfa, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, cabbage, cowpeas, rye, sorghum, melons, fruits and garden vegetables. There are numerous large peach and apple orchards in the county.
With excellent meadow lowlands for pasturage, Forsyth County is increasing its dairy herds. Two large pasteurizing plants offer good markets for high grade milk. Forsyth County cattle annually win many stock fair blue ribbons.
Tax Rate
Winston-Salem and Forsyth County have one of the lowest combined City and County tax rates in North Carolina. The City rate is $1.60 per $100 valuation; the County rate, 55c per $100. Property is assessed at two-thirds its value.
The moderate tax rate is partly made possible by the number of large locally-owned and locally-managed industries.
Recreation Facilities
Winston-Salem is interested in providing adequate recreation facilities for the entire population. An average of ten acres of playground to each public school provides recreation facilities for boys and girls. Organized recreation is made possible by the City of Winston-Salem and the Com- munity Chest.
The Bowman Gray Memorial Stadium, completed in 1938, with seating capacity for 11,174, makes possible a variety of sporting events.
A 187-acre municipal park and recreation area is now under construc- tion (early part of 1939), with plans for an 18-hole municipal golf course, swimming pool, gymnasium, lake and other facilities on a large scale.
