PREFACE.

HE NEW ENGLAND OF THE SOUTH" is the slogan for Lexington, the home of diversified manufacturing industries whose products are sold in all quarters of the globe. This is one of the reasons why the growth of Lexington during the past years has not been of the mushroom kind, but that steady push upward that is bringing her to the position her surroundings and facilities justify.

Lexington is the county seat of Davidson County, a county that already has ninety miles of railway, not counting twenty-eight miles of this as double track. The main line of the Southern Railway crosses the Winston-Salem Southbound at this point. The Southbound extends from Winston-Salem to Wadesboro, connecting at the former place with the Norfolk & Western line for the West and with the Atlantic Coast Line at Wadesboro for the South- east Thus ample shipping facilities for points North, East, West and South are readily available

For a number of years Lexington as a manufacturing center owed its importance largely to manufacture of furniture and lumber. Here are several of the largest furniture factories in the Piedmont section, devoted to making practically every article of household use. Connected closely with the furni- ture-making industry also are the mirror and upholstering plants. In fact one could almost completely furnish a home with Lexington products, outside of the kitchen.

Another industry in Lexington is assuming such importance as to threaten the lead of the furniture business for supremacy. This is the textile indus- try. With four large mills, making a variety of cloths and goods of varied color and weave, Lexington is now one of the considerable centers of this industry in the Piedmont section. Here is located what is conceded by ex- perts to be the model textile manufacturing plant in the United States, the Erlanger Mills, devoted to the manufacture of cloth for the famous D. V. D. underwear. This plant is just now doubling its output by preparing to run day and night. Eighty new bungalows will furnish homes of the best type for a large number of additional employes. At this place is located a modern Y. M. C. A. building with equipment for physical as well as mental and moral training. Gardens and lawns have been properly made under the supervision of a government expert. A visiting nurse keeps close watch on the health of the community and medical inspection is available for all school children.

With schools Lexington is well equipped up to the eleventh grade of high school work. The city graded and high school building is supplemented by the schools at Erlanger, Nokomis and Dacotah mill communities. With a continuation of the growth of the past few years, however, it is only a matter of a few years until school buildings will have to be greatly enlarged.

Lexington enjoys the distinction of being one town in the South that business depression affects very little. During the period of depression fol- lowing the outbreak of the European war much building activity was carried on here and with the return of the full tide of prosperity the town has reaped the full benefits of the wisdom of its policy of growth.

Besides the manufacturing plants already mentioned, Lexington is an

important milling center, due largely to the fact that it is the county seat of the largest wheat growing county in North Carolina. Here also is located a veneer plant, a large lumber concern and an important branch of the largest railway tie concern in the United States-The Valley Tie & Lumber Co.

As a good roads center Lexington stands second to none in North Caro- lina. It is on the line of the Central Highway of North Carolina, the South- ern National Highway and the National Highway. It is the center of a county system of near 300 miles of the finest topsoil roads in the country, built under thesupervision of road commissions and a corps of expert road engineers. These roads reach every section of the county and afford a won- derful impetus to all sorts of traffic. The Boone Highway from Warrenton, Mo., over a thousand miles away, will end at Lexington when it is completed, which is expected to be within the next few years. This will further link up the good roads system of the Eastern United States in such manner that thousands of motorists will pass through here each year. Good roads also furnish connection with all the surrounding towns.

There are few counties anywhere more favored by nature than Davidson, of which Lexington is the county seat and the most important town. It is rich in agricultural resources and a wonderful agricultural development is now under way, aided in great measure by the good roads that lead to Lex- ington. The dairying industry in the county is also making big strides and the establishment of the Davidson County Creamery in Lexington is helping wonderfully along this line.

Lexington has an ample supply of business houses, but it cannot be said to be crowded, for our merchants are unusually prosperous as a whole. Three of the most prosperous banks in this section give financial backing to all worthy enterprises

Every class of manufacturing enterprise will find a warm welcome and a fine opportunity for success here. Plenty of electric power is available, and the resources of the Yadkin River are just being developed. This river skirts Davidson County for thirty-five miles and contains a number of fine power sites.

It would be hard to find a town with better health conditions than prevail here. There are plenty of churches with able pastors and active membership. The people are famed far and wide for their unassuming cordiality. Resorts and play grounds nearby are easily available. The town is growing and all of its citizens have the utmost confidence in its continued growth. They are not prone to unduly boost it, but they are prepared to live up to what boosting they do.

Lexington is the home of the largest and most successful local paper in the South, The Dispatch. Here also is published the most successful maga- zine in the South and the only publication of its kind in the United States outside of a large city, Southern Good Roads Magazine.

Lexington wants more people and promises them a good town in which to live. It is one of the axioms of her people that no person who lives here as much as three months wants to leave. Those who have left and gone out to other places never forget their home town and always point to it with a large degree of pride. It is a well rounded little city, so happily situated that it cannot help but keep on growing.

E. E. WITHERSPOON.
